###Internal FAQ#####################################################################
###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

1 Connecting to the router

1.1	How do I set my unit back to the default IP address?

A.	By holding the reset button during the first 30 seconds of bootup,
the IP Address will return to the default value of 192.168.1.1.
Change the IP address settings of the LAN card in the PC to be

	IP Address: 192.168.1.2
	Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
	Default Gateway:	192.168.1.1

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

1.2	I have reset my unit to the default IP address and I still cannot
connect to the AR240E router.

A.	There may be a physical LAN connection issue. Try pinging the AR240e
from a command prompt on the PC. To start an command prompt:

	Win 95 / 98 / ME
		Start> Run...> command
	Win NT / 2000 / XP
		Start> Run...> cmd

Now ping the Allied Telesyn AR240e ADSL Router

	C:\>ping 192.168.1.1
Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
	Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=32
	Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=32
	Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=32
	Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=32

	Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
	Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
	Minimum = 0ms, Maximum =  0ms, Average =  0ms

If you cannot ping the router, there may be a physical LAN connection
issue. Use a 'Straight Through' Ethernet cable from your PC to the router.

Ethernet cable connected:	Ethernet LED on
Ethernet cable disconnected:	Ethernet LED off

If your Ethernet LED is permanently on or flashes intermittantly without
An Ethernet Cable then see the 'What do the LEDs mean?' section

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

1.3	My LAN connection seems operational, but I cannot ping the unit at 192.168.1.1.

A.	Your IP address may be incorrect. Check the IP address of your PC and confirm
that the IP address of the PC is correctly:

On Win95 / Win98
	Start> Run...> winipcfg

On Win98 / ME
	Start> Run...> command
	ipconfig /all

NT4 / 2000 / XP
	Start> Run...> cmd
	ipconfig /all

The IP settings on your PC should be:
	IP Address: 192.168.1.2
	Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
	Default Gateway:	192.168.1.1

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

1.4	My Physical LAN connection is operational, my IP address is correct, I still
can't ping the router at 192.168.1.1?

A.	Try clearing the ARP cache of the PC from a command prompt. To view the ARP
table use arp -a

	C:\>arp -a

	Interface: 192.168.1.2 on Interface 3

	Internet Address Physical Address Type
	192.168.1.1 00-30-0a-06-4f-4a dynamic

Now clear 192.168.1.1 from the ARP table with arp -d

	C:\>arp -d 192.168.1.1

	C:\>arp -a
	No ARP Entries Found

Please try reseting the unit back to factory defaults. See Question 1.

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

1.5	What do the LEDs mean?

A	The normal behaviour of the Ethernet LED should be:

Ethernet cable connected:	Ethernet LED on
Ethernet cable disconnected:	Ethernet LED off

If the Ethernet LED is permanently on, with no Ethernet cable connected the AR240e
is missing an operating system and therfore cannot load the IP stack. The unit is
locked and therefore requires a Return to Base repair.

If the Ethernet LED is flashing intermittantly with the ADSL LED with no Ethernet
cable connected the AR240e is in recovery mode and if you can ping the IP address
then it can be reloaded.

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

2	Software updates

2.1	What are the different software versions?

A.	15-12-01	Jan 2002
	15-12-02	May 2002
	01-00-00	Aug 2002
	01-00-01	Sep 2002

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

2.2	Where can I get the latest software version?

A.	http://www.alliedtelesyn.co.uk/support/ar240e

The software has been removed from the website due to complexity of upgrade between
15-12-0x and 1-00-0x.

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

2.3	I have just upgraded from 15-12-xx to version 01-00-xx and I cannot
login via my browser, nor telnet. I get a login window but my username
& password are rejected. What could be wrong?

A.	The default username has changed from software version 15-12-xx to
01-00-xx. See Question 2.4

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

2.4	What is the default GUI / Telnet username & password?

A.	The default username & password depends upon the software version.

Under software version 15-12-xx the default username is 'admin', the default
password is 'admin'

Under software version 01-00-xx the default username is 'manager' the default
password is 'friend'

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

2.5	I have just upgraded from 15-12-xx to version 01-00-xx and I cannot
login via my browser. I no longer get a login dialog. What could be wrong?

A.	The default port has changed from software version 15-12-xx to 01-00-xx.

Under software version 15-12-xx the ipaddress is 192.168.1.1, the default
browser port is 80. You connect to the router by typing in the browser window:
	http://192.168.1.1

Under software version 01-00-xx the ipaddress is 192.168.1.1, the default
browser port is 8080. You connect to the router by typing in the browser window:
	http://192.168.1.1:8080

NB. Remember to type http:// otherwise it will not work.

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

2.6	When I attempt to either reload version 01-00-xx or upgrade to version
01-00-xx using the upgrade 'dslflash.exe' program, I get the error message
'You are not unlocked for writing'. What could be wrong?

A.	When the upgrade program connects to the TFTP server on the AR240e router,
it must supply a TFTP password. Between 15-12-xx and 1-00-xx the password changed from 'password'
to 'friend'.

If you get an error message the 'dslflash.exe' program is supplying the wrong password
to the AR240e and is therefore unable to unlock the AR240e for flash writing.

You will have to manually edit the settings. Do not do this unless you are a
confident PC user.

Make a backup copy of <dslflash.dat> to be <dslflash.dat.001>.

Using wordpad.exe, *not* notepad.exe open the file called 'dslflash.dat'.
This file contains the settings for the upgrade program.

When you save the file, wordpad will prompt you for the format to save the file.
'You are about to save the document in Text-Only format, which will remove all formatting.
Save DSL Flash as Word 6.0, Rich text Format or Text Document.' Selext TEXT DOCUMENT.

Under the [Setting] header edit the tftppassword parameter.

If the tftppassword parameter in the flashdsl.dat file is currently 'password' and your
transfer is failing then it is most likely that you are trying to reload 01-00-00 on
top of 01-00-00. Try changing the tftppassword parameter in flashdsl.dat to be 'friend'

If the tftppassword parameter in the flashdsl.dat file is currently 'friend' and
your transfer is failing then it is most likely that you are trying to upgrade from
15-12-xx to 01-00-00. Try changing your tftppassword parameter in flashdsl.dat to
be 'password'

Be careful Windows has not appended .txt on the end of the file. Check using Windows
Explorer and looking at the properties of the file by right clicking on it.

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

2.7	I am running 2000 / XP, I have got halfway through the upgrade and I get the
error message "Status: Remote Host is not responding"?

A.	You may have been getting your IP address dynamically. When the AR240e reboots
during the upgrade process, the LAN connection on Win 2000/XP automatically drops any
dynamically assigned IP addresses. It is recommended that you set the IP address of
your PC to be 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0.

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

2.8	When I try and run the upgrade program, I get one of the following error messages:

"dslflash MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience" WinXP

"dslflash.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created" Win2000

"This program has caused an ilegal operation and will be shut down.
DSLFLASH caused an invalid page fault in module DSLFLASH.EXE" Win95

A. Ensure your PC has an IP address of 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0, reboot your PC.
Close as many other applications as possible and then restart the computer.

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

2.9	When I try and run the upgrade program, I get the following error message
"Update Mode start failed, insufficient system RAM"

When you run the upgrade program it starts a TFTP server on the router. If an update is
attempted, memory is allocated on the router. If an update fails, the memory may still be
allocated and subsequent update attempts fail due to insufficient RAM.

It is also worth disconnecting the ADSL line from the router while doing the update since
firewall sessions / PPPoA can use RAM required for an update.

The solution is to restart the AR240e router. This will clear up the allocated RAM and the
upgrade can then be re-attempted. The 'insufficient system RAM' error only occurs after an
attempt has been made once and has failed for another reason, such as incorrect tftp
username/password. See question 2.6

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

2.10	The upgrade from 15-12-00 to 1-00-0x seems really hard. Will it always be this hard?

A.	No. Subsequent upgrades from 1-00-0x can be done through the browser interface
which is a very simple process.

3	Configuration

3.1	What settings should I use in the UK?

WAN Connection:	PPPoA Routed
WAN PPPoA VPI:	0 (zero)
WAN PPPoA VCI:	38

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

3.2	Are IP addresses always remote assigned in the UK?

A.	Yes. Even when they are fixed.

###Internal FAQ#####################################################################

3.3

"I am a relatively long distance from the exchange, or have a noisy line, and I find
that my ADSL link keeps on dropping out, what can I do?"

A: There are two main types of ADSL service - G.DMT and G.Lite. G.dmt is faster, but
more intolerant of noisy lines; G.lite is slower, but more tolerant. By default, the
AR240E the ADSL service is set to "Multi" which means that the AR240 and the equipment
at the exchange decide which service to use. Very often they will choose to use G.DMT.
However, on the "ADSL" page of the GUI, you can force the AR240 to use G.Lite (see the
set of radio buttons at the very bottom of that page). So, you can try deleting your
current ADSL connection, and recreating it with G.Lite specified instead of multi.
This may cure the problem.

4	Support

4.1	I am still having problems. What should I do?

The problem may be related to your services provider, it may still be a configuration.
If your ISP provided you with a USB ADSL Modem such as a 'BlueFish' then attempt to get
that working on your DSL connection. If that works then it may still be configuration
trouble.

Consider checking Allied Telesyn's Knowledge Base. If your question is not in the
knowledge base then why not submit it? We can then publish the question to help other
people.
	http://kb.alliedtelesyn.com

If you still have problems then Allied Telesyn's Support organisation can help you.
Send an e-mail including:

a) Your full contact details. One of the engineers will require this info to log
the call.

b) A diagram and description of what you are trying to do. The more information
you send, the quicker your problem will be solved.

c) Screenshots of what you have configured. MS-Windows can copy a screenshot
to the clipboard by pressing Alt^PrtSc. Remember to Zip your files since these
will easily compress using zip
