Technical Support ________________________________________ 1. Installation Installation of the Stowaway software is simple and straight forward. If the Stowaway driver is present on the Visor, be sure to delete it before installing the new driver. 1.1 Using the Palm Desktop Software that came with the Visor 1. Attach your Visor to your computer and synchronize to back up your files. 2. Insert the Stowaway software CD into your CD-ROM drive. 3. Double-click the CD-ROM icon to open it. 4. Double-click the Keyboard.prc file to run the installation program and prepare the Stowaway software for installation. The application will be automatically added to your list of applications to be installed the next time you HotSync with your desktop computer. 5. Attach your Visor to your desktop computer and synchronize to complete the software installation. 1.2 Beaming the Stowaway Software The Stowaway software can be beamed from another Visor. The Visor receiving the software must have Beam Receive turned on. You can find this setting on the General page of the Prefs application. 1. On the Visor that already has the Stowaway software installed, go to the Applications screen by tapping on the house icon in the lower left corner of the screen. 2. Tap on the menu icon located just under the house icon and select Beam... from the pop-down menu. 3. Select the Keyboard application from the list of applications. 4. Put the Visor that will receive the software next to the Visor that has the Stowaway software. 5. Tap on the Beam button. 6. On the Visor that received the Stowaway software, tap on the Accept button to finish the install. 2. Disk Contents Acrobat 4.0 - Adobe Acrobat Reader software for reading the .PDF files Keyboard.prc - The Stowaway software application Readme.txt - This file. It contains the latest information about this version of the Stowaway keyboard and software UserGuide.pdf - Complete user's guide to the function and feature set of the Stowaway keyboard. 3. Features 3.1 International Character Set The Stowaway Portable keyboard supports the full international character set of the Visor handheld. Most international characters are entered using a combination of the Alt key and another alpha-numeric character. 3.2 Menu commands Most menu commands can be accessed through keyboard shortcuts. Press Cmd button while pressing the menu's shortcut character, e.g. Cmd-N for New memo. 3.3 Layout page A new page has been added to the Stowaway Software that is used to select which keyboard layout is applied to the physical keyboard. There are four keyboard layouts included with the driver. Other layouts will be available via the web. To choose a different layout: 1. Run the keyboard application. 2. Select Layout from the drop down list in the upper right corner. 3. Select a different layout from the drop down list next to the Layout: label. There are two other options on this page: Tab and Jog-Dial. You can use the Tab selection to change the usage of the Tab and Fn-Tab keys. Enable the Jog-dial check box if you are using the Stowaway keyboard with an application that supports the Sony Clie Jog-dial. 4. Known Issues with the Stowaway Software 1. Removing Visor while a key is held down leaves key repeating. The key will repeat for only a short time, then it will stop. 2. Deleting the driver when other hacks are enabled may cause a Fatal Error. 3. IR Receive is turned off whenever the keyboard is attached to the Visor. 4. Fn-Cmd doesn't work well when intermixing Graffiti and the Keyboard. Also, Graffiti shortcuts cannot be completed by the keyboard. 5. Ctrl-Cmd-W does not work. 6. Cmd-Arrow, Ctrl-Shift-Arrow, and Shift-Arrow do not work well in all cases. Their behavior depends on the application that is running. 7. Beaming from the Visor will disable the keyboard until the power is turned off then back on or until 30 seconds have elapsed. 8. Ctrl-Alt-Shift-<Letter> is not supported. 9. The scroll bar is not updated when pressing the up and down arrow keys. 10. Find can't be stopped with Ctrl-Cmd-S. 11. Onscreen buttons cannot be selected with the keyboard while a Pop-Up menu is open. 12. Cmd-# keys cannot be mapped to Find. 13. Key clicks don't keep up with fast typing 14. The "Cmd" key does not make the "command" prompt appear on the screen. 15. The arrow keys cannot be used in menu items or used to select items from most pop-up lists. 16. A Fatal Error will be generated if the 1.0 software is beamed over the top of version 1.5. 17. Tab does not insert a tab in any application. This function is put on Fn-Tab. 5. Troubleshooting 5.1 Beaming while attached to Keyboard will disable keyboard. There is a conflict between the Visor's IR port and the serial connection on the Visor unit used by the keyboard. This conflict will cause the keyboard to be disabled, if you try to beam while the keyboard is attached. If this occurs, simply turn the Visor off and then on again to re-enable the keyboard. 5.2 Handheld computer compatibility The Targus Stowaway software is exclusive to the Handspring Visor units. This version can not be used on Palm III, V or VII. For Palm keyboard drivers, visit the Palm web site directly at http://www.palm.com/custsupp/keyboard. 5.3 Some buttons cannot be pressed with Ctrl-Cmd-letter The Ctrl-Cmd-letter sequence works when the first character of a button is different from all other buttons. If two buttons have the same first character, then try another character within the button that is not part of any of the other buttons, e.g. Ctrl-Cmd-t for a Restore button. 5.4 A Fatal Error occurs when the driver is deleted The Palm OS does not directly support system traps. Since the driver installs system traps, it may come into conflict with other software that also installs traps. If a Fatal Error does occur, reset your Visor by inserting a paperclip into the reset hole on the back of your Visor. The Visor should recover with no data loss. 5.5 Software Incompatibility List The following software is known to experience problems when the Stowaway software is installed. Jot - problems exist with older versions upgrade to version 1.21 or above. SmartDoc. - problems exist with older versions upgrade to version 2.0 or higher. 6.
