                      Windows 98 Driver Installation

   Windows 98 provides a complete "Plug and Play" System that
   automatically recognizes and configures SMC8041 V.2.

   Before installing the SMC8041 V.2 adapter, Windows 98's PCMCIA
   service must be installed and enabled.  This service can be started 
   in the Control Panel.

   Driver Installation Steps for Windows 98:

       1) Insert SMC8041 V.2 in one of the PCMCIA Slots and start Windows 98.

       2) The "Add new hardwarw Wizard" dialog box appears, click the "Next" button.

       3) Select "Search for new driver (Recommended)", then clink "Next" button.
 
       4) Selecy "Specify a location", insert the SMC8041 V.2 driver diskette in the 
          floppy drive (e.g. A:.). Type "A:\win98" and  click "Next" button.

       5) Win98 will find driver installation file in the specified location, click 
          "Next" button.
          
       6) The installation process copies all the required  files to the hard disk.  
          If the process prompts the location of the Windows 98 system files, place
          the Windows 98 CD in the CD-ROM drive and enter the location of the CD-ROM 
          drive in the dialog box.  Please wait for the process to finish.

       7) Click "Finish" to complete the installation process.

       8) Reboot the machine to start the network.

   Note:

      When Windows 98 and the Network is up and running, it is not
      recommended to remove the SMC8041 V.2 adapter from the
      PCMCIA slot without telling the system first.  Before you remove
      the adapter, please follow these steps:

      1) Double click on the My Computer icon, and then double click on
         the Control Panel icon.
      2) Double click on the PCMCIA icon.  The "PC Card (PCMCIA) Properties"
         window appears.
      3) Select "SMC 10/100 PC Card (SMC8041 V.2)" from
         the list, and then click the Stop button.
      4) Wait until the message box with the "You may safely remove the
         device" message appears.  Click OK.
      5) Remove the SMC8041 V.2 adapter from the PCMCIA slot.

      If you do not follow these steps and just pull the adapter from
      the PCMCIA slot, the system may hang and you have to reboot the
      system.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
