ROM Hide - Hides ROM applications from the Application Launcher --------------------------------------------------------------- v0.1.7 2002-04-09 NOTE: Use of this application is not supported by Sony Electronics. Use at your own risk. 1. Requirements --------------- * Palm OS v3.5 or greater 2. Installation --------------- Install RomHidePanel.prc to the device. 3. Usage -------- 1. Run the Prefs application. 2. Select "ROM Hide" from the Preferences pop-up list. 3. Select which ROM applications should be hidden from the Application Launcher. 4. Uninstallation ----------------- On devices running Palm OS v3.5, ROM Hide cannot be deleted if there are any hidden ROM applications. Restore all hidden ROM applications before removing ROM Hide. On devices running Palm OS v4.0 or later, deleting ROM Hide with the Launcher's delete command will restore all hidden applications automatically. 5. How It Works --------------- ROM Hide does not modify the ROM in any way. If a device has multiple versions of an application installed, the Palm OS Application Launcher displays only the most recent version. ROM Hide takes advantage of this feature by creating a new, "dummy" application in the RAM with the same name and creator ID as the corresponding ROM application. The dummy version in the RAM is treated as newer than the one in the ROM, and only the RAM version is displayed in the Launcher. ROM Hide then marks the dummy RAM version as hidden, preventing it from being displayed in the Launcher. Thus, both ROM and RAM versions are hidden from view. This method is inelegant, but it should work with all versions of the standard Palm OS Launcher. 6. Limitations and Known Issues ------------------------------- * ROM Hide works with the standard Palm OS Application Launcher. It does not work with many third-party launcher replacements, such as SilverScreen, CRS-Launcher, and Rondo, among others, which do not respect the hidden flag and display all applications, including hidden ones. * When hiding an application, an entry for that application will appear in the Launcher's Delete dialog. DO NOT DELETE THE ENTRY. Deleting the entry also will delete any associated application data. * ROM Hide cannot be deleted with MS Gate if there are any ROM applications are hidden, regardless of the OS version. * Does not allow the Prefs application to be hidden since doing so would prevent hidden applications from being restored. * Does not support hiding RAM-based applications. May be implemented in a future version. * ROM Hide is not compatible with MS Autorun. Hiding MS Autorun may disable it. * Each dummy application consumes 1.8 KB of RAM. 7.
