IS USB CORRECTLY INSTALLED?

If you connect to the USB Ethernet Adapter and nothing happens, you may
have a problem with the USB setup. To determine if USB is correctly installed,
proceed as follows:

1. Right-click on 'My Computer'
2. Click 'Properties'
3. Select the 'Device Manager' tab
4. If 'Universal serial bus controller' is not listed:

        A. USB is not installed on your machine
        B. Contact your system manufacturer for instructions on
           installing USB  support

5. If 'Universal serial bus controller' is listed:

        A. Click the '+' sign next to the title to expand that section
        B. Highlight 'USB Root Hub'
        C. Click 'Properties'
        D. Verify that the USB Root Hub is working properly

If the Root Hub is working, you may have a problem with the USB Ethernet
Adapter. Contact Microsoft technical support.

The driver (SMCUSB.SYS) contained in the disk is for
the following SMC USB Adapter:

      EZ Connect USB to Dual Speed Ethernet Converter 

The driver (SMCUSB.sys) conforms to the Network Driver Interface
Specification (NDIS) 5.0, and is used with Microsoft Windows 98, 
Windows 2000 and Windows Millennium.

      Notice: Windows XP has build in driver for "EZ Connect USB
              to Dual Speed Ethernet Converter". So we should update
              the build in driver. 


  Contents of the file:
  (A) Installing the NDIS5 Miniport driver on Microsoft Windows 98 
  (B) Installing the NDIS5 Miniport driver on Microsoft Millennium
  (C) Installing the NDIS5 Miniport driver on Microsoft Windows 2000
  (D) Update the build in driver on Microsoft Windows XP
  
(A) Installing the NDIS5 Miniport driver on Microsoft Windows 98 
=================================================================

    1. Plug the SMC USB Adapter into one of USB ports.
    2. Turn the power ON, then boot from Windows 98.
    3. When Windows 98 prompts with "USB Device" in "New Hardware Found"
       dialog box, click the "Next" button.
    4. Select "Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended)"
       from the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, then click the
       "Next" button.
    6. Insert the driver disk in your PC's drive.
    7. Select "Floppy disk drives" or "CD-ROM drives" and click
       "Next" button.  
        
        Notes:
        If you have the driver CD-ROM, please insert the CD-ROM,
        and select the "CD-ROM drives", if you have driver floppy
        disk, please insert the driver floppy disk, and select the
        "Floppy disk drives".   
        
    7. Windows will find the driver for the device, then click the 
       "Next" button in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box.  
    8. Windows 98 will copy the driver (SMCUSB.sys) from driver
       disk to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
    9. When Windows prompts with "EZ Connect USB to Dual Speed Ethernet
       Converter" in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, click the
       "Finish" button.
   10. Remove the  Driver disk.
   11. Restart your computer to initialize the network function.

       NOTICE: C:\WINDOWS is the directory where your Windows 98
                O.S. is located.

(B) Installing the NDIS5 Miniport driver on Microsoft Millennium
=================================================================

    1. Plug the SMC USB Adapter into one of USB ports.
    2. Turn the power ON, then boot from Windows Millennium.
    3. When Windows Millennium prompts with "USB Device" in
       "New Hardware Found" dialog box, click the "Next" button.
    4. Insert the driver disk in your PC's drive. 
       
       Notes:
        If you have the driver CD-ROM, please insert the CD-ROM,
        if you have driver floppy disk, please insert the driver 
        floppy disk. 
         
    6. Select "Automatic search for a better driver (Recommended)", 
       then click "Next" button.    
    7. Windows will find the driver for the device, then click the 
       "Next" button in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box. 
    8. Windows Millennium will copy the driver (SMCUSB.sys)
       from driver disk to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
    9. When Windows prompts with "EZ Connect USB to Dual Speed Ethernet
       Converter" in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, click the 
       "Finish" button.
   10. Remove SMC2206USB/ETH Driver Disk.
   11. Restart your computer to initialize the network function.

       NOTICE: C:\WINDOWS is the directory where your Windows ME
                O.S. is located.

(C) Installing the NDIS5 Miniport driver on Microsoft Windows 2000
=================================================================

    1. Plug the SMC USB Adapter into one of USB ports.
    2. Turn the power ON, then boot from Windows 2000.
    3. When Windows 2000 prompts with "USB Device" in "Found New Hardware" 
       dialog box, in "Found New Hardware Wizard" dialog box click the 
       "Next" button.
    4. Select "Search for a suitable driver for my device (recommended)" 
       from the "Found New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, then click the
       "Next" button.
    6. Insert the driver disk in your PC's drive. 
    7. Select "Floppy disk drives" or "CD-ROM drives" and click
       "Next" button.  
        
        Notes:
        If you have the driver CD-ROM, please insert the CD-ROM,
        and select the "CD-ROM drives", if you have driver floppy
        disk, please insert the driver floppy disk, and select the
        "Floppy disk drives".
       
    8. Windows will find the driver for the device, then click the "Next" 
       button in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box. 
    8. Windows 2000 will copy the driver (SMCUSB.sys) from disk
       to the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\Drivers directory.   
    9. When Windows prompts with "EZ Connect USB to Dual Speed Ethernet
       Converter" in the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, click the
       "Finish" button.
   10. Remove the SMC2206USB/ETH Driver disk .

       NOTICE: C:\WINNT is the directory where your Windows 2000
                O.S. is located.


(D) Update the build in driver on Microsoft Windows XP
================================================================
   1.  Plug the SMC USB Adapter into one of usb ports. Turn the power on,
       then boot from Windows XP, Windows XP will install the build in 
       driver for the SMC USB Adapter automatically.     
   2.  Click the "start" button,"control panel" and double click "System" icon.
       Then Windows XP prompts with "System Properties" dialog box .
   3.  Select the "Hardware" and click the  "Device Manager" button from
       the "System Properties" dialog box, Then Windows XP prompts with the
       "Device Manager" windows.
   4.  Insert the SMC2206USB/ETH Driver disk.   
   5.  Double click the "Network adapters" from "Device Manager" windows. 
   6.  Right click the "SMC EZ Connect USB/Ethernet Series Converter", 
       And click "Update driver...". Then Windows XP prompts with 
       "Hardware Update Wizard" dialog  box.
   7.  Select "install from a list or specific location(Advanced) " and 
       click the "next" button from the "Hardware Update Wizard" dialog box.
   8.  Select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install" and click
       the "next" button from the "Hardware Update Wizard" dialog box.
   9.  Click the "Have Disk" button , then type  "X:\" in text box and
       click "OK" button from "Install From Disk" dialog box..
       
        Note: X: means the floppy or CD drive containing the drivers,
              such as: A:, B: or D: etc.
       
   10. click "next" button, windows XP will find the driver(SMCUSB.SYS) and 
       copy it to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Drivers directory.
   11. When Windows prompts with "EZ Connect USB to Dual Speed Ethernet
       Converter" in the "Hardware Update Wizard" dialog box, click the
   12. Remove the SMC2206USB/ETH Driver disk .

       NOTICE: C:\WINDOWS is the directory where your Windows XP
                O.S. is located.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
