Updating the Dell 5100cn Firmware

Downloading and extraction:
1. Download the file "5100cn_MR2_update.exe" from the Dell Support Website and save it to your hard drive. Suggest selecting the “Desktop” as the “Save-to” location for ease of finding the file after the download has completed.
2. After the download has completed, locate and double-click the file "5100cn_MR2_update.exe" to begin the file extraction process.
3. The self-extractor opens, it is suggested the default “Unzip to folder” remain as provided; click "Unzip".
4. After the files extract, another window will indicate that "22 file(s) unzipped successfully"; click OK; then click "Close"
5.On the system desktop, locate the folder "5100cn_MR2_update" and double-click to open. There should be six items:
	•readme.txt (this file)
	•readme.doc
	•01_5100cn_ESS sub-folder
	•02_5100cn_MPC sub-folder
	•03_5100cn_ENG sub-folder
	•04_5100cn_NV sub-folder


Confirming current printer firmware revisions:
1. At the printer control panel, press the MENU button.
2. Press the down arrow until CONFIGURE is displayed; press the SET button.
3. Press the down arrow until REPORTS is displayed; press the SET button to display PRINTER SETTINGS.
4. Press the SET button; The Printer Settings report should print. Depending on optional hardware installed in the printer, it may be 2 pages long.
5. Several items on this page will be updated by this firmware upgrade. It is recommended this page be dated and saved for future reference.


NOTE: This entire update procedure is based on the printer being connected to a Network and connected to the SAME SUBNET. If not connected to the same subnet, temporarily move the printer to the same subnet of the system running the update utility.
•If your printer is NOT connected to a Network, the USB or Parallel local connections may be used instead. If either of these local connections are used, the printer drivers will need to be installed using the local connection to the system before running the firmware updater.


IMPORTANT: After the entire update process has been completed, the “admin” password will be 
reset to the default “password” and the language will be set to English.


 
Running the Firmware Update Utilities:
Firmware package 01
1. Open folder 01_5100cn_ESS
2. Double-click the file dellfwup.exe to run the Update Utility
3. When the firmware update window opens, ensure the button for “Network” is selected; Click Next.
4. The next window will display the module name and firmware version of the update program.
Example: Module Name:Printer F/W(200503021506)
Also shown will be a list including the IP address and current firmware versions of the Network printers available on your network.  Compare the Module version to the Printer F/W version. If they match, the printer does not need the firmware update. Click the box to select only those printers that do not have firmware revisions that match the module version; click NEXT.

NOTE: Each time the update utility is started, even if you have already updated a printer, the status for all printers will always be shown as “Not Complete”. Also, current firmware revisions may not always be displayed. Use the Printer Settings report for comparison if needed.

5. A new screen will indicate that data is being sent to the printer; The firmware update utility will show the status as “Updating”; then the LCD on the printer should display:
	•“Receiving… Port9100”
	•followed by “Writing… Port9100”
	•followed by “Completed”
	•then the printer will reset and display the message “Diagnosing…”
	•followed by “Ready to Print” status.
6. The firmware update status should indicate “Complete”; click Next, then click Finish.
7. Close the folder 01_5100cn_ESS

If your printer has an MPC (Multi-protocol Card) option installed (can be verified with the printer settings page under “Printer Options”) then proceed with. If no MPC option is installed, then skip to step 15.

NOTE: If you accidentally run the MPC update on a printer that does not have the optional MPC card, the printer LCD will display “INSERTION ERROR”, “Press SET”. To clear the error, press the “SET” button on the printer.

8. Open folder 02_5100cn_MPC
9. Double-click the file dellfwup.exe to run the Update Utility.
10. When the firmware update window opens, ensure the button for “Network” is selected; Click Next.
11. The next window will display the module name and firmware version of the update program.
Example: Module Name:NIC APPLICATION(7.30)
Also shown will be a list including the IP address and current firmware versions of the Network printers available on your network.  Compare the Module version to the Printer F/W version. If they match, the printer does not need the firmware update. Click the box to select only those printers that do not have firmware revisions that match the module version; click NEXT. 

NOTE: Each time the update utility is started, even if you have already updated a printer, the status for all printers will always be shown as “Not Complete”. Also, current firmware revisions may not always be displayed. Use the Printer Settings report for comparison if needed.

12. A new screen will indicate that data is being sent to the printer; The firmware update utility will show the status as “Updating”; then the LCD on the printer should display:
	•“Receiving… Port9100”
	•followed by “Writing… Port9100”
	•followed by “Completed”
	•then the printer will reset and display the message “Diagnosing…”
	•followed by “Ready to Print” status.
13. The firmware update status should indicate “Complete”; click Next, then click Finish.
14. Close the folder 02_5100cn_MPC

15. Open folder 03_5100cn_ENG
16. Double-click the file dellfwup.exe to run the Update Utility
17. When the firmware update window opens, ensure the button for “Network” is selected; Click Next.
18. The next window will display the module name and firmware version of the update program.
Example: Module Name:MCU(01.00.04)
Also shown will be a list including the IP address and current firmware versions of the Network printers available on your network.  Compare the Module version to the Printer F/W version. If they match, the printer does not need the firmware update. Click the box to select only those printers that do not have firmware revisions that match the module version; click NEXT.

19. A new screen will indicate that data is being sent to the printer; The firmware update utility will show the status as “Updating”; then the LCD on the printer should display:

	•then the printer will reset and display the message “Diagnosing…”
	•followed by “Ready to Print” status.
20. The firmware updater status should indicate “Complete”; click Next, then click Finish.
21. Close the folder 03_5100cn_ENG

22. Open folder 04_5100cn_NV
23. Double-click the file dellfwup.exe to run the Update Utility
24. When the firmware update window opens, ensure the button for “Network” is selected; Click Next.
25. The next window will display the module name and firmware version of the update program.
Example: Module Name:NVM(01.01.00)
Also shown will be a list including the IP addresses of the Network printers available on your network. Click the box to select the printer to update; Click Next.

NOTE: Each time the update utility is started, even if you have already updated a printer, the status for all printers will always be shown as “Not Complete”. Also, current firmware revisions may not always be displayed. Use the Printer Settings report for comparison if needed.

26. A new screen will indicate that data is being sent to the printer; The firmware update utility will show the status as “Updating”; then the LCD on the printer should display:
	•“Receiving… Port9100”
	•followed by “Writing… Port9100”
	•followed by “Completed”
	•then the printer will reset and display the message “Diagnosing…”
	•followed by “Ready to Print” status.
27. The firmware updater status should indicate “Sent”; click Next, then click Finish.
28. Close the folder 04_5100cn_NV



Confirming NEW printer firmware revisions:
Once again, print a Printer Settings report to confirm the printer firmware revision. It is recommended these also be dated and saved for future reference.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
