1.0 Overview
============
This printer driver software allows you to print documents from any Windows
95 and Windows 98 compatible application to your Canon BJC-5000 Series
Bubble Jet printer. This printer driver software does not operate
with any other version of Windows, such as Windows 3.1 or Windows NT.
Please contact your local Canon sales company regarding support for other
versions of Windows.

2.0 Key Features
================
This printer driver software provides a variety of basic and advanced
capabilities to give you high-speed and high-quality printed output and
complete control over the printing process. This driver includes several
key features that are designed for ease of use and flexibility:
  - high-quality color and grayscale printing
  - fast processing time for rapid return-to-application time
  - built-in access to troubleshooting and maintenance tools
  - direct links to Canon's home page on the World-Wide Web.

3.0 System Requirements
=======================
The Canon BJC-5000 Series Windows Printer Driver does not
require any additional system configuration beyond those required to run
Windows 95 or Windows 98. However, you can improve the performance of
your Canon printer if you:

1. The minimum amount of RAM memory required is 8 MB, although at least
   16 MB is highly recommended for optimal performance. Increasing the
   amount of RAM will result in faster printing and reduce compatibility
   problems with some applications. For higher-resolution printing (such
   as 720x720 dpi or 1440x720 dpi), the minimum amount of RAM required
   is 16 MB, although at least 32 MB is recommended for best performance.

2. Allow at least 10 MB of free hard disk space on the drive that contains
   your system's TEMP directory. If you will be printing lengthy documents
   consisting of many pages, or if you will be printing at higher resolutions,
   you should allow additional hard disk space on your system.

3. Your computer system should include an ECP-compatible parallel port for
   maximum printing speed, and ECP mode should be enabled for this printer.

5.0 Accessing the Printer Properties Dialog Box
===============================================
The Printer Properties dialog box contains several tabs that allow you to
set up, control and maintain your Canon printer. To access the Printer
Properties dialog box, use the following procedure:
  1. Click on the "Start" button.
  2. Point to the "Settings" item.
  3. Click on the "Printers" item to display the Printers folder.
  4. Click on the icon for your printer to highlight it.
  5. Click with the right mouse button on the icon, and then click with the
     left mouse button on "Properties".

This will display the Printer Properties dialog box, which contains the
following tabs:
  General - Lets you print a test page and define separator pages.
  Details - Lets you define printer port assignments and spooler settings.
  Settings - Lets you define or change the print mode and settings.
  Troubleshooting - Provides helpful information about solving common problems.
  Maintenance - Includes diagnostic tools for maintaining your printer.

You can also display the Printer Properties dialog box from within a software
application by clicking on the Print item from the File menu, and then clicking
on the Properties button. In other applications, you can click on the Printer
Setup item from the File menu and then click on the Setup button. However, the
General and Details tabs are not available in this mode.

6.0 Accessing Help Information
==============================
From the Printer Properties dialog box, you can click on the "Help" button to
display additional information about every feature and option in the Canon
printer driver. You can also use the Windows 95 or Windows 98 "What's this?"
method by using the right mouse button to click on any item for information
about that item and its operation. Alternatively, you can click on the question-
mark (?) symbol in the upper right corner of each dialog box, and then click on
any item to display help for that item.

7.0 Hints for Color Printing
============================
For the best color printing speed and quality, you should install at least
one color ink cartridge (BC-21e) into Holder 1 of your printer and click on
the "Regular" button in the Settings tab of the printer driver. If you are
printing primarily color graphics, you can improve printing speed by adding
a second color ink cartridge in Holder 2. If you are printing a mixture of
some color graphics and lots of black text, you can improve the printing
speed by using a color ink cartridge (BC-21e) in Holder 1 and a black-only
ink cartridge (BC-23) in Holder 2.

8.0 Hints for Photo-realistic Printing
======================================
For the best photo-realistic color printing quality, you should install
a color ink cartridge (BC-21e) in Holder 1 and a photo ink cartridge (BC-22e)
in Holder 2. You should also click on the "Photo-realistic" button in the
Settings tab of the printer driver.

9.0 Hints for Grayscale Printing
================================
For the best grayscale printing speed, you should use one or two black-only
ink cartridges (BC-23). It is possible to use only the black ink of a color
ink cartridge, but the printing speed will be considerably slower. To print
in grayscale when a color ink cartridge is installed, you must click on the
"Print with black ink only" check-box.

10.0 Cautions, Limitations and Restrictions
===========================================
1. A known problem in Corel Mosaic Version 5.0 may cause incomplete printed
   output. Please contact Corel Corporation for an update.

2. When sharing a document file among several computer systems, make sure that
   all of the fonts used by the document are installed on all computer systems.
   Otherwise, some text fonts will not be printed correctly.

3. When printing from Adobe Photoshop, you must select the "RGB" mode rather
   than the "CMYK" mode to avoid printing some incorrect colors.

4. Banner Printing Tips
   a) MS Publisher 97 - to avoid some overlapping printed results between
      page boundaries, you must select "File/Print/Tile Printing Options"
      and set the value of "Overlap tiles" to 0.
   b) Print Shop Ensemble III
      To avoid any gaps between pages, use Standard quality mode instead of
      Draft quality mode.
   c) For best results, you should only print one copy of a banner at a time.
      If you request multiple copies, the printed results may be unpredictable.
   d) Insert the banner media through the Manual Feed slot in the back of the
      printer. Make sure to select the "Letter Banner" or "A4 Banner" from the
      Paper Size list box.

5. Certain page sizes may be supported by the printer and its driver software,
   but not supported by the application software. These are limitations of
   your application, and you should contact your application vendor in such
   cases.

6. Some applications such as Microsoft Internet Explorer v3.0, Microsoft
   Exchange v4.0 or v5.0, Netscape Navigator v3.0 or v4.0 and Adobe Photoshop
   v4.0 or v5.0 do not support printing of multiple copies on printers with
   limited memory. For such applications, the selection for the number of
   copies is disabled so you can only print one copy at a time. In some cases,
   this is corrected in a later version of the application. Please check with
   your application vendor for an updated version.

7. When printing from Corel Presentations v7.0 or Corel Quattro Pro v7.0
   and v8.0, the setting of the "Print with Black Ink Only" check-box is
   not recognized if you set it from within the application. To avoid this
   problem, exit the application and set this item from the Properties
   dialog in the Printers folder.

8. The BJC-5000 and BJC-5100 are bi-directional devices and will not work
   properly unless 'Enable bi-directional support for this printer' is
   checked through the 'Spool Settings...' button on the Details tab in the
   BJC-5000 or BJC-5100 properties.

11.0 Conflict Fix Performed by the BJC-5000 and BJC-5100 Driver Version
     1.2, Version 1.4 and Version 2.0
======================================================================
1. In either Windows 95 or Windows 98 there may be a device driver called
   drvwppqt.vxd that is known to cause a conflict with some peripheral
   devices, including the BJC-5000 and BJC-5100. To solve this conflict
   the BJC-5000 and BJC-5100 printer driver (Version 1.2, Version 1.4 and
   Version 2.0) will search for this device driver, "drvwppqt.vxd", during
   the printer driver's installation. If this device driver is found, it
   will be renamed "drvwppqt.old". If it is not found, the BJC-5000 and
   BJC-5100 printer driver will continue to install itself normally.

2. The renaming of the device driver to drvwppqt.old simply prevents this
   driver from being loaded by Windows 95 or Windows 98 during the boot
   process.

3. More information on this conflict can be found in Microsoft Technical
   Support Article, ID Q157145. This drvwppqt.vxd driver is produced by
   Seagate Software for use with tape backup devices. Note that you
   probably will not be able to use a Seagate tape backup device with the
   above described fix in effect.

4. The conflict fix performed by the BJC-5000 and BJC-5100 can be reversed
   by changing the name of the device driver back to "drvwppqt.vxd".

12.0 Color Management under Windows 95
======================================================================
If you do not want to use ICM 1.0 functionality, you should not choose
'Photo/ICM' in "Canon BJC-5000 Series Properties/Maintenance/Calibrate the
Printer Colors (Adjust Gamma)/Select Gamma" on Version 1.2 and Version 1.4 or
"Canon BJC-5100 Properties/Settings/Custom Settings/"Photo/ICM" on Version 2.0,
and choose 'RGB Color' in "File/Print/Space" on Adobe Photoshop 5.0. It does
not work with any settings in the driver on Adobe Photoshop 4.0 and Microsoft
Publisher 97.

13.0 Color Management under Windows 98
======================================================================
If your application does not support ICM 2.0 functionality, you are unable
to use it.

If you do not want to use ICM 2.0 functionality, you should proceed with the
following according to your application. It does not matter whether 'Photo/ICM'
is chosen within the driver or not.

1. Imaging on Windows 98
   Uncheck "File/Color Management/Enable Color Management".

2. Adobe Photoshop 5.0
   Choose 'RGB Color' in "File/Print/Space".

3. Corel DRAW 7/PHOTO-PAINT 7
   Uncheck "File/Print/Use color profile (Generic Profile)".

4. Corel DRAW 8/PHOTO-PAINT 8
   Uncheck "File/Print/Miscellaneous/Use color profile".
