.TOPIC: Contents Accton Technology Corporation EN2220 Fast EtherCard-32 10/100 Fast Ethernet CardBus PC Card Windows 95 Driver Installation Overview -------- Windows 95 versions 950 and 950a (OSR1) do not have built-in support for CardBus Cards. When you insert a CardBus card into a socket under these systems, they do not recognize the card. In these systems you have to install a CardBus card manually as a legacy (non-plug-and-play) card. The Windows 95 version 950B (OSR2) and its successor, the operating system with the code name Memphis, do recognize CardBus cards. These systems also support the hot-swap capability. This means you can insert or remove a CardBus card while the system is running without disrupting the system's other services. Before you install the Accton EN2220 CardBus PC Card for the Windows 95 OSR2 version, please make sure the driver for the CardBus socket controller is installed correctly. This can be verified by carrying out these steps: 1) Double click on the "Control Panel" icon. In the "Control Panel" window, double click on the "System" icon. 2) In the "System Properties" window, click on the "Device Manager" tab. 3) In the "Device manager" listed tree view box, look for the "PCMCIA socket" item. If this item cannot be found, the CardBus socket controller driver is not installed. You should install this driver first. If the item is found, click on the "+" sign next to the "PCMCIA socket" item, and the name of the CardBus controller is displayed. Please make sure there is not a cross mark or an exclamation mark on top of the CardBus socket controller name. If there is, you have to reinstall the driver for the CardBus controller. Two adapter names are provided in the installation information file (ACC2220.INF): 1) "Accton EN2220 Fast Ethernet CardBus PC Card" -- for Windows 95 OSR2 and Memphis. See item (A) in the "Driver Installation Procedure" section below. 2) "Accton EN2220 Fast Ethernet CardBus PC Card (Manual Load)" -- for Windows 95 and OSR1. See item (B) in the "Driver Installation Procedure" section. Driver Installation Procedure: ----------------------------- A) Driver installation for Windows 95 OSR2 version B) Driver installation for Windows 95 and OSR1 A) Driver installation for Windows 95 OSR2 version 1. Bring up an MS-DOS command window. Enter the following DOS commands: CD %windir%\INF RENAME NETPCI.INF *.IN_ EXIT 2. Insert the Accton EN2220 card in one of the CardBus sockets. Attach the coupler to the back of the card, and connect a cable from the RJ-45 connector at the back of the coupler to a hub or switch. Note if you are attaching to a 100 Mbps network, the cable has to have the grading of CAT-5. 3. Windows 95 displays the "New Hardware Found" window, with "PCI Ethernet Controller" as the device name. 4. Windows 95 displays the "Update Device Driver Wizard" window, with the message "This wizard will complete the installation of: PCI Ethernet Controller." Click the "Next>" button. 5. The "Update Device Driver Wizard" displays the message: "Windows found the following updated driver for this device: Accton EN2220 Fast Ethernet CardBus PC Card." Click the "Finish" button. 6. Windows 95 displays the "Insert Disk" warning message box, with the message: "Please insert the disk labeled 'Accton EN2220 Fast Ethernet CardBus PC Card Driver Diskette,' and then click OK." Click the OK button. 7. Windows 95 displays the "Copying files..." box. In the "Copy files from:" edit box, enter the diskette path name, i.e. A:\ (or B:\). Click the OK button. 8. Windows 95 copies the necessary files from the driver diskette and the Windows 95 CD-ROM to the system directories on the hard disk. If Windows 95 asks for the location of the Windows 95 CD-ROM, please specify the location of it. Wait until the installation process is completed. 9. Shutdown and restart the computer. 10. The driver is installed. Now each time when you insert an EN2220 card in a CardBus socket in your notebook, Windows 95 will load the EN2220 driver automatically and bring up the network function. Please note EN2220 must be properly connected to a hub or switch when you insert the card in the socket; otherwise the card and driver would not come up correctly. B) Driver installation for Windows 95 and OSR1 1. From the Windows 95 desktop, double click on "My Computer", "Control Panel", and "Network" icons. 2. From the Network dialog box, Click "Add", "Adapter", "Add", and "Have Disk." The "Install from diskette" dialog box appears. 3. Insert the Accton EN2220 Driver Diskette in the floppy drive. 4. Enter the diskette path name, i.e. A:\ (or B:\). Click the OK button. 5. Select "Accton EN2220 Fast Ethernet CardBus PC Card (Manual Load)" from the list. Click the OK button. 6. This step assigns resources to the EN2220 card. In the Network window, select "Accton EN2220 Fast Ethernet CardBus PC Card (Manual Load)" from the list. Click the Property button, and then click the Resource tab. You then have to assign non-conflicting values for three types of resources: I/O port, IRQ, and memory mapped address. In the resource value edit box, if an '*' appears next to the resource value, it indicates this resource is in use by another device in the system, and EN2220 should not attempt to use it. You can use the up and down arrows to the right of the edit box to select another value of the resource until the '*' goes away. When you are done, click the OK button. 7. In most cases, the default values assigned to the EN2220 configuration parameters work just fine. However, If you need to fine-tune the driver, please carry out the steps listed in the "Driver Configuration Procedure" below. 8. In the Network window, click the OK button. Windows 95 then copies files from the driver diskette and the Windows 95 CD-ROM to system directories on the hard disk. If Windows 95 asks for the Windows 95 CD-ROM, please specify the location of it. Wait until the installation process is completed. 9. You can now shutdown and restart the computer. It is always advised to do a cold-boot (turn the power off and on) when you restart Windows 95. Please also note at Windows 95 initialization, the Fast Ethernet CardBus PC Card must be properly connected to a hub or switch; otherwise the card and driver would not come up correctly. Driver Configuration Procedure: ------------------------------ 1. Click the "My Computer" icon. 2. Click the "Control Panel" icon in the "My Computer" window. 3. Click the "Network" icon from the "Control Panel" window. 4. Select "Accton EN2220 Fast Ethernet CardBus PC Card" from Network Components list box. Click the "Properties" button. 5. Click the "Advanced" tab. From the "Property" selection list, you can configure the following properties: Common parameters for Windows 95, OSR1, and OSR2 ------------------------------------------------ <1> 100Mbps Transmit Threshold: Set the NIC Transmit FIFO threshold for 100Mbps line speed. The default value is 128 bytes. <2> 10Mbps Transmit Threshold: Set the NIC Transmit FIFO threshold for 10Mbps line speed. The default value is 96 bytes. <3> Burst Length: Set the PCI bus memory read/write burst length. The default value is 16 Dwords. (1 Dword = 4 bytes.) <4> Connection Type: Set the medium attached. Default is AutoSense. <5> Map Registers: This parameter is machine dependent. The Default value is 8. <6> Memory Read Multiple: Enable the PCI bus Memory Read Multiple feature. Default is "Disable." <7> Receive Buffers: Set the number of NIC receive buffers. The default value is 16. <8> Snooze Mode: Enable the snooze mode can force the NIC to low power state. Default is "Disable." <9> Store And Forward: Enable this parameter will cause NIC to disable the transmit data pipeline operation. Default is "Enable." <10> Underrun Max Retries: Set the maximum retry count after transmit FIFO underrun. Machine dependent parameters for Windows 95 and OSR1. ----------------------------------------------------- <1> Socket Number: Specify in which socket a EN2220 is inserted. Default is "Auto detect." <2> Interrupt Style: Specify the CardBus bridge interrupt routing strategy. Default is "PCI-IRQ-Routed." <3> PCI Interrupt Routing: Specify which interrupt pin is used while the CardBus bridge is using "PCI-IRQ-Routed." Default is "INT A." It is extremely important to assign correct values to the IRQ value and the "Interrupt_Style" parameter. If the system uses the "PCI-IRQ-Routed" interrupt style, it is also important to assign the correct PCI "Interrupt_Routing" value (i.e. INT A or INT B.) If in doubt about the values to assign to these parameters, you are advised to execute the CBOPEN.EXE card enabling program in a native MS-DOS system first. CBOPEN.EXE displays the IRQ value used, as well as the system's interrupt style. For the Windows 95 driver, you should assign the same values to the above parameters as those displayed by CBOPEN.Download Driver Pack
