This VXA driver is for use with the VXA-1, VXA-2 and VXA-3 tape 
drives and the Microsoft Native backup software on Windows 2000, 
Windows XP, Windows 2003.

WARNING:
If you use a commercial backup software package, refer to its 
installation instructions.  DO NOT install this driver unless 
instructed to do so by the software installation instructions.

2. Windows2000 DRIVER INSTALLATION

  1. Boot the machine to Windows2000 with the VXA drive attached
     and powered-on. Refer to the Product Manual for the drive for
     hardware installation instructions.

  2. Click on Start / Settings / Control Panel, then double click
     the System icon. 

  3. Click on the Hardware tab then Click on the Device Manager 
     button. 

  4. In the list of devices you will see a category called 
     "Other Devices".  Expand "Other Devices", and you should see 
     a device with the name of "Ecrix VXA-1", "Exabyte VXA-2", or
     "Exabyte VXA-3".

  5. Double click on the tape drive to open the Properties window.

  6. Click the Driver tab on the Properties dialog and click the
     "Update Driver..." button.

  7. The Upgrade Device Driver Wizard appears.  Click Next.

  8. Choose the second radio button, which says 
     "Display a list of known drivers so that I can choose a
     specific driver".  Click Next.

  9. The Hardware Type window will be displayed.  Select 
     "Tape drives" from the hardware type list, and click the 
     Next button to continue.

 10. At the "Select a Device Driver" window, click the HAVE DISK
     button.

 11. At the "Install from Disk" window, click the BROWSE button.

 12. At the "Locate File" window, browse to the directory where 
     you have downloaded and extracted the driver.  Select the 
     OPEN button and the OK button to confirm the directory path.

 13. At the "Select a Device Driver" window, select the 
     VXA drive product name from the list shown.  Click the 
     NEXT button.  

 14. An "Update Driver Warning" may be displayed.  If it is, 
     select the YES button to continue.

 15. At the "Start Device Driver Installation" window, click 
     the NEXT button to continue with driver installation. Then
     click on the FINISH button to close the wizard.
 
 16. The VXA tape driver is now installed. The VXA tape drive 
     should be listed under Tape devices in the Device Manager
     window. 

 17. Reboot the system.

3. Windows2000 DRIVER UPDATE

  If you have already installed a previous version of the VXA
  driver for Windows2000 and want to update to the latest version,
  use these steps:

  1. Boot the machine to Windows2000 with the VXA drive attached
     and powered-on. Refer to the Product Manual for the drive for
     hardware installation instructions.

  2. Click on Start / Settings / Control Panel, then double click
     the System icon. 

  3. Click on the Hardware tab then Click on the Device Manager
     button. 

  4. In the list of devices you will see a category called 
     "Tape drives".  Expand "Tape drives", and you should see a 
     device with the name of "Ecrix VXA-1", "Exabyte VXA-2", or
     "Exabyte VXA-3".

  5. Double click on the tape drive to open the Properties window.

  6. Click the Driver tab on the Properties dialog and click 
     "Update Driver..." button.

     should be listed under Tape devices in the Device Manager
     window.

4. REMOVING THE DRIVER FROM Windows2000
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

  If you have already installed the VXA driver for Windows2000 
  and want to remove it from the system, use these steps:

  1. Boot the machine to Windows2000 with the VXA drive attached 
     and powered-on.

  2. Click on Start / Settings / Control Panel, then double click
     the System icon. 

  3. Click on the Hardware tab then Click on the Device Manager 
     button. 

  4. In the list of devices you will see a category called 
     "Tape drives".  Expand "Tape drives", and you should see a 
     device with the name of "Ecrix VXA-1", "Exabyte VXA-2", or
     "Exabyte VXA-3".

  5. Right click the tape device and select Uninstall.  At the 
     Confirm Device Removal dialog, click OK.

  6. Right click on Start, and choose Explore.

  7. Go to the \WINNT\INF directory.

  8. Look for files called OEM*.INF.  Open each OEM*.INF file and 
     look for "VXA.INF" at the top of the file.  When you have
     found an OEM*.INF file with "VXA.INF", take note of the name
     of the file. For example, "OEM6.INF".

  9. Close the file.  Delete the OEM*.INF file for VXA and delete
     its corresponding OEM.PNF file as well.  For example, if the
     file called OEM6.INF is for VXA, delete both the OEM6.INF and
     OEM6.PNF files.

  10. In Explorer, go to the \WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directory. 
      Find the file called vxa*.sys and delete it.  The file may 
      be called vxa.sys, vxa32.sys, or vxa64.sys.

  11. Reboot the system.

     button. 

  4. In the list of devices you will see a category called

  9. At the "Please choose your search and installation options" 
     prompt, choose the second radio button, which says 
     "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install".  
     Click Next.

 10. The Hardware Type window will be displayed.  Select 
     "Tape drives" from the hardware type list, and click the Next
     button to continue.

 11. At the "Select a Device Driver" window, click the HAVE DISK
     button.

 12. At the "Install from Disk" window, click the BROWSE button.

 13. At the "Locate File" window, browse to the directory where 
     you have downloaded and extracted the driver. You will see
     a file called vxa.inf.  Select the OPEN button and the OK 
     button to confirm the directory path.

 15. A warning may be displayed that the driver has not passed 
     Windows Logo testing.  If it is, select the CONTINUE ANYWAY 
     button to continue.

 16. Click on the FINISH button to close the wizard.
 
 17. The VXA tape driver is now installed. The VXA tape drive 
     should be listed under Tape drives in the Device Manager 
     window. 

 18. Reboot the system.

6. WindowsXP/2003 DRIVER UPDATE

  If you have already installed the VXA driver for WindowsXP/2003 
  and want to remove it from the system, use these steps:

  1. Boot the machine to WindowsXP/2003 with the VXA drive attached
     and powered-on.

  2. Click on Start / Settings / Control Panel, then double click
     the System icon. 

  3. Click on the Hardware tab then Click on the Device Manager
     button. 

  4. In the list of devices you will see a category called 
     "Tape drives". Expand "Tape drives", and you should see a 
     device with the name of "Ecrix VXA-1", "Exabyte VXA-2", 
     or "Exabyte VXA-3".

  5. Right click the tape device and select Uninstall.  At the

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
