\HELP\README.TXT NETGEAR EA201 Ethernet Card --------------------------- Introduction ------------ Thank you for purchasing the NETGEAR Model EA201 Ethernet ISA PnP adapter. The NETGEAR EA201 adapter has been developed by combining the latest 10BASE-T Ethernet technology,Plug and Play (PnP) and Industrial Standard Architecture (ISA) local bus technology. Getting Started --------------- A DOS installation/help program, HELP.EXE is provided for ease of setup for normal users. HELP.EXE will provide information on driver installation for the appropriate network operating systems. A Diagnostics program is also provided to verify the connection between the NETGEAR EA201 adapter and the hub or switch. To run the installation/help program, simply run HELP.EXE program in the root directory of the driver disk. (eg. A:\HELP<Enter>) To run the diagnostic program, simply run SETUP.EXE program in the root directory of the driver disk. (eg. A:\SETUP<Enter>) If the network operating system you are using is not covered by the installation program, refer to the individual documentation provided for \HELP directory. Release Note ------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------- | | | The EA201 Ethernet adapter does not have any on-board jumper | | or switch. Quick Installation Guide ------------------------ Congratulations on your purchase of the NETGEAR EA201 Ethernet ISA Adapter. The EA201 adapter has been developed to comply with the Plug and Play (PnP) specifications so user configuration is minimized when installed in a PnP compatible system running a PnP compliant operating system. This guide applies to the following adapters: -------------------------------------------- | Model | Connector | Media | |--------------------------------------------| | EA201 | RJ-45 | UTP | -------------------------------------------- Adapter Installation -------------------- CAUTION: The adapter is packed in a plastic anti-static package to protect it during shipment. To avoid damaging any static- sensitive components, after removal from the package, be sure to reduce any static electricity on your body. You can touch the metal chassis of your computer, and maintain grounding by wearing a wrist strap attached to the chassis of the computer. For PC systems or operating systems that are not compatible with the PnP specifications, the included SETUP.EXE program on the diskette allows you to setup the EA201 adapter card for proper operation. Setup Program ------------- This program is provided in the diskette that comes with the adapter. To run, execute the following command at the DOS prompt: > SETUP (eg. A:\SETUP<Enter>) The main menu appears with the following options: * Setup Configuration. Lets you specify the connector type, the I/O base address, the interrupt number, the enabling of plug-and-play funcation and the duplex mode. For a list of the various supported settings, see specifications section at the end of this README.TXT file. * Run Diagnostics. Lets you perform a diagnostic test on your adapter. When configuring multiple adapters, make sure that you assign a different I/O base address and interrupt number for each adapter. Also, reboot your computer after saving a new configuration to allow the new configuration to be loaded into the system memory. Another option is to use the SETUP/D command. SETUP /D allows the adapter to be setup non-interactively. This allows remote batch changes to ease a multiple card setup. The SETUP program will load the configuration values from a SETUP.DAT text file. SETUP.DAT needs to be in the same directory as SETUP.EXE. Example SETUP.DAT file ---------------------- Connector Type UTP ---> media type I/O Base Address 0x300 ---> I/O base address Interrupt Number 5 ---> IRQ number PNP Disable ---> disables the PnP function FullDuplex Enable ---> enables the full duplex function LED Indicators -------------- The LED indicators help you monitor the network status. They are located on the same side as the RJ-45 connector. The following table describes the function of each LED: ---------------------------------------------------------------- | Power/Tx | |----------------------------------------------------------------| | Connector | LED | Description | |----------------------------------------------------------------| | UTP | ON | Power is provided to the adapter. | |----------------------------------------------------------------| | UTP | Blink | There is data transmitted by the adapter. | ---------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- | Link/Rx | |----------------------------------------------------------------| | Connector | LED | Description | |----------------------------------------------------------------| | UTP | ON | Network connection is established. | |----------------------------------------------------------------| | UTP | Blink | There is data received by the adapter. | ---------------------------------------------------------------- Supported Network Drivers ------------------------- Before you could use an adapter in a particular network environment, you need to first install the driver program for that particular operating system. Otherwise, the adapter will not operate properly. Following is a list of network operating systems supported by the NETGEAR EA201 Ethernet ISA adapter. * NetWare 3.x, 4.x server, Client 32 for DOS/WIN, Windows 95 * NetWare ODI driver for DOS. * NDIS driver for DOS * Packet driver * Windows NT 3.51/4.0 * Windows NT Advanced Server 3.51/4.0 * Windows for Workgroups Version 3.11 * Windows 95/98/2000 * SCO UNIX Besides the drivers listed above, you may also use the NE2000 drivers for the EA201 series of adapters. For the installation procedure, see the *.TXT file in the driver diskette. Specifications -------------- * I/O address: 240, 260, 280, 2A0, 2C0, 2E0, 300*, 320, 340, 360,380 * IRQ: 3*, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15 * Buffer RAM size: 16K bytes * Transmission distance: -- UTP: 100 meters (with Category 3 or 5 cables) ( *: factory default setting) Support Options --------------- For technical support, please refer to the Installation Guide or contact your authorized NETGEAR distributors.
