Astra3400 - Instructions.txt Driver File Contents (umax_astra_3400_winxp.zip)

I forgot to include the directions on how to use that
zip file when I first posted it. Sorry about that.
Other people email and ask about that too, so I've kept
a record of that email response to others - see below:
=======================================================

In order to use the contents of this zip file, you
need to have the software that came with the scanner
already installed on your WinXP system. I believe
the software that shipped with this scanner was Vista
Access version 3.75 which you should have on CD.
If not, go to the Umax site, download, then install
that software first. Here's the link to the Umax
Website: http://www.umax.com/world/

It works like a charm! I can't believe what a pain in
the butt this was - and that Umax couldn't post this
online for their product user support. Ah, well.
I'll assume that you already know how to copy or save
the ZIP file into a folder on your hard disk, perhaps
a folder that's entitled: Astra3400 Driver Update
Once the zip file is in that folder, go ahead and
unzip it, in order to make available the required files.

1. Turn the power to the scanner on
2. Reboot your machine
3. Go to SETTINGS - CONTROL - SYSTEM - Hardware Devices
4. Open up the Imaging Devices - locate Astra 3400
5. RIGHT CLICK - go to properties - then DRIVERS
6. Click the option to update Drivers - MANUALLY
7. You may or may not have to click on an option for
    viewing all available devices.
8. Locate the new folder with the unzipped files.
(the folder that you just created for them)
9. Select the 3400 scanner - and then click okay.
0. Click okay if you get the message about NON digitally
signed drivers - otherwise this won't work.

Reboot the machine, and bingo. The Umax Astra 3400/3450
will now work without the terribly inferior WinXP driver
software. IMPORTANT NOTE: The "one touch" buttons in
the front of the scanner will still not work. Just the
software itself from just within Windows, or from within
a quality image editing application such as Photoshop,
Paintshop Pro, Pixia, and so on. This is merely an in-
convenience, and not a big deal at all. Once you get
used to the software, you'll love this scanner!

=========================================================

HINT: For better, faster scans, try to use 100% size
in 75 dpi custom mode. Once you're happy with the way
the scans are being done, disable the preview mode too.
That way the scanner only makes one single pass which
is much faster, and your light will last twice as long.
If this text file did the trick for you, I'd appreciate
a quick courtesy email as a "Thank You" just to let me
know. Thanks. Good luck, and enjoy the scanner!
