Msg100 = What is a modem?

Msg101 = A modem is a communication device that enables computers to "talk" to each other over regular phone lines.

Msg102 = What causes bad telephone line conditions?

Msg103 = Modems do not perform well on telephone lines that are either "noisy" or do not have enough bandwidth. Telephone lines can become noisy when they are placed near power cords, audio cords, or some types of electrical equipment. Not having enough bandwidth is usually due to the way that the telephone company has configured your telephone line, or even all of the telephone lines in your neighborhood.

Msg104 = What is an Internet Service Provider?

Msg105 = Internet Service Providers, also known as ISP's, are companies that offer ways of getting onto the internet. Examples of ISPs are America On Line (AOL), MSN, and DellNet.

Msg106 = What is V.90 / V.92 (or 56K) and what does it mean?

Msg107 = V.90 / V.92 is a specification that was developed by several modem companies to make modems communicate faster (up to 56,000 bits of information per second). However, the actual speed that a modem will reach is greatly dependent on telephone line conditions. Even though your modem is capable of speeds up to 56,000 bits per second, the FCC limits standard U.S. phone lines to speeds no faster than 53,333 bits per second. This is the speed your modem could reach if you lived within a few feet of the telephone company's central office. The farther a modem is from the central office, the slower it will communicate. If line noise is present, the speed will be further decreased.

Msg108 = Why can't I connect to my ISP?

Msg109 = While the V.90 / V.92 standard was being finalized, several early versions of this standard were released into the market and many ISPs are still using them. This will often cause incompatibilities with modems that are fully compliant to the final version of the V.90 / V.92 standard, like your Dell modem. The best solution to the problem of not being able to connect to an ISP is to call them and discuss possible solutions. They may have alternative telephone numbers that will offer better performance.

Msg110 = What is the internet?

Msg111 = The internet is a network of millions of computers that are available for access by any computer that is connected to the internet.

Msg141 = For some reason, the modem is not detecting a dial tone. Modem Helper will need a standard telephone to best determine the cause of this problem. A standard telephone is any telephone you currently use in your home, including cordless phones. If you have to dial a prefix (such as 9 or 8) to dial some phone numbers, you more than likely are not using a standard telephone.

Msg151 = What is a dial tone?

Msg152 = A dial tone is the tone that is heard on a telephone just before telephone numbers are dialed.

Msg153 = What is a dialing prefix?

Msg154 = A dialing prefix is a number (usually "8" or "9") that is dialed to allow a telephone to make calls "outside" of a building or campus. Most telephones that are used in a large work environment will require the use of dialing prefixes.

Msg168 = Another telephone is currently being used on the same telephone line that the modem is connected to.

Msg169 = Hang up the telephone that is using the telephone line.

Msg171 = Disconnect all devices that are plugged into the same telephone line as the modem elsewhere in your home or office. If the modem detects dial tone after unplugging all devices, then one of the devices that was disconnected is faulty.

Msg172 = A telephone cord of great length is being used for the modem.

Msg173 = Use a shorter telephone cable, preferably the 6 foot cable that was sent with the computer.

Msg174 = The telephone wall jack that the modem is plugged into is faulty.

Msg175 = Try another telephone wall jack that is known to be good, such as the one your main telephone is using.

Msg176 = The modem is not connected directly to a telephone wall jack.

Msg186 = What is Off-Hook and On-Hook?

Msg187 = Off-Hook is when a telephone is lifted OFF of the telephone base (or hook) and is being used. On-Hook is when a telephone is placed back ON the telephone base (or hook).

Msg188 = What is a telephone coupler?

Msg189 = A telephone coupler is a device that is used to connect two telephone cables together, resulting in a longer telephone cable.

Msg190 = What is a telephone splitter?

Msg191 = A telephone splitter is an adapter that plugs into a standard, single telephone jack and provides two or more telephone jacks on the other end.

Msg192 = What is a digital phone system?

Msg193 = Digital phone systems are special phone systems used commonly in office environments to create a large, private telephone network within the walls of the business. Not all office telephone networks are of the digital type, but many of them are. The higher level of electrical current present on these types of phone systems can damage a regular analog modem, so Dell includes a feature called Digital Line Guard in all of its analog modems. As a result, the modem will refuse to go off hook as a self-protection feature if high electrical current levels exist at the phone jack.
