PowerVault 110T-LTO2-L Tape Recovery Utility for Windows and Linux

If there is media in the drive that CANNOT be ejected, the Tape Recovery Utility may be able to eject the media.  The Tape Recovery Utility will upgrade the firmware to 2.35 and eject the media.  The ejected media must NOT be used again.  Firmware version 2.35 will automatically eject bad media.  Not all stuck tapes can be recovered using this tool.  

NOTE: x: represents the system root drive letter.***Please be prepared to restart the server after completing the upgrade***

Extract instructions

Windows
Download and run the file “R132121.exe” from a Microsoft Windows Based System.  
This will create the directory: x:\dell\drivers\ R132124\ 

Linux
1.      Copy the file R132124.tar.gz file to the Linux system.
2.      Open a console session and go to the directory where the file was saved and type the command: tar –zxvf R132124.tar.gz

This will extract all files and relevant subdirectories to the current directory.

The following files will be extracted.
readme.htm  : Installation instructions in HTML format
readme.txt  : Installation instructions in text format
/Windows/recover.exe :  executable for Windows Environments
/Linux/recover :  executable for Linux Environments


Using the Tape Recovery Utility

Windows 2000/2003 Instructions 
1.      Go to the directory x:\dell\drivers\ R132124\Windows.  Double Click on recover.exe.   A console screen will open up.
2.      Each tape device found on the system will be represented by a device number.  Select the device number for the device you wish to recover.
3.      You will then be asked if you would like to upgrade the firmware.  A firmware upgrade is required to eject the media.
4.      The console application will begin to update the firmware and eject the media.  This will take several minutes.
5.	The ejected media must NOT be used again. Firmware version 2.35 will automatically eject bad media. 
6.      Reboot the server.

Linux Instructions 
1.      Open a console session and go to the directory where the files were extracted 
2.      Type the command: . /recover and press return. 
3.      Each tape device found on the system will be represented by a device number.  Select the device number for the device you wish to upgrade.
       Note: if you do not see any devices check cabling and make sure the sg module is loaded.  

       You can issue command “lsmod | grep sg”.  If nothing is returned type the command “modprobe sg” to start the sg service.

4.      You will then be asked if you would like to upgrade the firmware.  A firmware upgrade is required to eject the media.
5.      The console application will begin to update the firmware and eject the media.  This will take several minutes.
6.	The ejected media must NOT be used again. Firmware version 2.35 will automatically eject bad media. 
7.      Reboot the server.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
