What Is Fixed in This Release? Installation Known Limitations Remote Install User Notes History ###################################################################### COMPATIBILITY/MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ###################################################################### ====================================================================== System Requirements ====================================================================== The following is a list of Remote Install software components and the requirements for each component: * Image server - A system running the Remote Install Management Station software. Remote Install is supported only on Dell PowerEdge systems. Operating system requirements: Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, or Windows Server 2003 (Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, or Web Edition) * Target system - A Dell PowerEdge 1655MC system managed by remote install. Operating system requirements: Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003 (Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, or Web Edition), Red Hat(R) Linux 7.3, or Red Hat Linux 9 NOTE: You can manage target systems created by Remote Install version 1.0 on an image server running Remote Install version 1.1 or 1.2. If you use Remote Install to capture images, Dell recommends that you update to Remote Install version 1.2. See "Upgrading to Remote Install Version 1.2" in the "Remote Install User's Guide." * Admin console - A system with a browser that can access the Remote Install GUI. Operating system requirements: Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows Server 2003 (Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, or Web Edition), Red Hat Linux 7.3, or Red Hat Linux 9 Browser requirements: Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and either Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer 5.x or later or Netscape Navigator 6.x or later ====================================================================== "Dell OpenManage Server Assistant" CD and Remote Install Compatibility ====================================================================== You can use either the "Dell OpenManage Server Assistant" CD or Remote Install to install operating systems on target systems. If a target system is connected to the Remote Install management network and its PXE boot order is set to "Before hard drive", then Remote Install supercedes Server Assistant in installing the operating system. If you want to use Server Assistant to install the operating system, perform ONE of the following workarounds: - Disconnect the target system from the Remote Install management network, use the "Server Assistant" CD to install the operating system, and then reconnect the target system to the management network. OR - Set the PXE boot order of the target system to "After hard drive", use the "Server Assistant" CD to install the operating system, and then reset the PXE boot order to "Before hard drive". OR - Manually skip PXE boot during the reboot process by pressing <Esc> when the PXE boot prompt appears on the screen. ###################################################################### WHAT IS NEW IN THIS RELEASE? ###################################################################### Remote Install version 1.2 provides support for localization of the Windows Server 2003 operating system in supported languages: English, French, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish. For details about supported operating systems on image servers and target systems, see "What's New in Version 1.2" in the "Remote Install User's Guide" on the product documentation CD or on the Dell Support website at "support.dell.com". ###################################################################### WHAT IS FIXED IN THIS RELEASE? ###################################################################### The following issues are fixed in Remote Install version 1.2: * Access violation popup message problem for Windows Server 2003: After uninstalling Remote Install agents from systems running Windows Server 2003, a "ksagent" error message that previously appeared after the next boot is now resolved. * Installation problems when using the universal naming convention (UNC): When using a path such as "\\IPAddress\sharedDirectory", users encountered installation problems. Users can now run image server and target system installation directly from the UNC path or by mapping a drive to the shared directory. * Failure to set the domain name system (DNS) server for target systems running Red Hat Linux 7.3: Remote Install now allows the user to set the DNS system for the target systems running Red Hat Linux 7.3. * Adding user account to user's group by default in Microsoft Windows operating systems: An assigned user in the configuration file is added to the user's group during the configuration. German, French, and Spanish versions of the operating system translate the user's group name correctly. Japanese and Simplified Chinese versions of the operating system do not translate the name of the user's group. * Incorrect error messages: Earlier versions of Remote Install sometimes displayed incorrect error messages such as "target system is not responding and has been made unmanageable." These false error messages have been removed. ###################################################################### INSTALLATION ###################################################################### To install Remote Install using the "Systems Management" CD or using Dell preinstalled software, see the "Remote Install User's Guide". To install Remote Install using Dell OpenManage Web packages downloaded from the Dell Support website at support.dell.com: On systems running Windows, run "setup.exe" from the root of the installation folder. On systems running Linux, start X Windows and run "start.sh" from the root of the installation folder. ###################################################################### KNOWN LIMITATIONS ###################################################################### This section provides information about open issues for Remote Install version 1.2. * Remote Install uses multiple ports to communicate among its components. If you have other applications running, make sure that these applications are not using or blocking any of the following ports: 67, 69, 443, 1131, 8007, 8009, 8081, 8443, and from 10000 to 10006. * In some cases, after deploying an image, a target system may be shown in the "Disconnected" state for up to 5 minutes before going to the "Up" state. * A target system may show up with a status of "unmanaged" because of a network connection problem or a faulty configuration. If this occurs, uninstall and reinstall the Remote Install agents on the target system. Delete the target system from the image server's list of systems and reboot the target system. * When you use the "Server Assistant" CD to install the operating system on a Dell PowerEdge 1655MC system, you have the option of installing Server Administrator. If this box is checked, the Remote Install target system agents are installed. Ensure that the option to install Server Administrator with the operating system is NOT checked if you want the system to be an image server. Otherwise, you must uninstall the target system agents before the image server software can be installed. * Remote Install Agent does not support capturing an image from a system with load-sharing virtual NICs (also known as "NIC teaming") enabled. Disable NIC teaming before capturing the operating system image. After deployment, perform the following steps to re-enable NIC teaming on the deployed target system: 1. Uninstall the Remote Install agent. 2. Enable NIC teaming. * Before you finish the configuration of a target system, the host name displayed on the system table might not be the actual assigned host name. * Dell recommends leaving the Maximum Number of Simultaneous Deployments to its default value of 18. If this value is set to a value lower than the number of images being deployed simultaneously, some images may not be deployed. Leaving the value at 18 will also minimize the amount of time necessary to deploy a set of images ###################################################################### REMOTE INSTALL USER NOTES ###################################################################### This section provides information to help you use Remote Install. ====================================================================== How to Retrieve Log Files for Support ====================================================================== The following log files located on the image server can assist you in debugging: * DDHCP.log - This file is located at: "<InstalledDrive>:\dell\openmanage\netstart\ddhcp" where <InstalledDrive> is the letter of the Remote Install installation drive. This file contains DHCP and autodiscovery logs. The default size for "DDHCP.log" is set to 5 MB. When the size of "DDHCP.log" exceeds its limit, it is backed up as "DDHCP0.log". * KSDebug.txt - This file is located at: "<InstalledDrive>:\dell\openmanage\netstart\KickStart" This file contains configuration logs. The default size for "KSDebug.txt" is set to 5 MB. * Server.log - This file is located at: "<InstalledDrive>:\dell\openmanage\netstart\oem\jboss\log" This file is the main log file for Remote Install. The default size for "Server.log" is set to 4 MB. When the size of "Server.log" exceeds its limit, its content is backed up to the files "Server.log.1", "Server.log.2", and so on. You can retrieve these log files by using the "Logs--> Properties--> Application" tab. ===================================================================== Remote Install Reserved Directories ===================================================================== Remote Install is installed in several directories, including the following: "<InstallationDrive>:\dell" "<InstallationDrive>:\Program Files\dell" where <InstallationDrive> is the drive letter of the installation drive. Do not modify or delete files in these directories unless specifically instructed to do so by the user documentation. Also, always use the Remote Install browser-based GUI to access the image server when modifying or deleting images or packages. Do not directly delete or modify files in the shared storage directories. ====================================================================== Configuration Notes ====================================================================== After a target system is configured properly, it goes to the "Up" state. Remote Install does not allow you to reconfigure a target system in the "Up" state. If you want to reconfigure such a system, delete the system from the image server and reinstall the agents on the target system. ###################################################################### HISTORY Remote Install Version 1.1, April 2003 ###################################################################### ====================================================================== What Was Fixed in Remote Install Version 1.1? ====================================================================== The following issues were fixed for Remote Install version 1.1: * Automatic importing of existing images into a directory where storage share images have been captured: When you add a storage share to a directory on an image server and then uninstall and later reinstall the Remote Install application, Remote Install automatically imports the images it finds in those directories. The images become available to the storage share. * Deployment of backup image going to the "Up" state: An issue was fixed that sometimes caused backup deployment to go to the "Unmanaged" state after deployment. When you deploy a backup image, the target system now goes to the "Up" state. * FAT32 primary partition capture and deployment: In Remote Install version 1.0, a system with a Microsoft Windows 2000 primary partition deployed to it might not boot because the boot loader section was not fully recorded. This issue has been fixed. * Sector mode capture of an extended partition: In Remote Install 1.0, an image captured in the "sector" mode of a system with an extended partition might cause errors, such as "target system disk too small," when the image is deployed to a target system. This issue is resolved. ====================================================================== Known Limitations for Remote Install Version 1.1 ====================================================================== This section provides information about open issues for Remote Install version 1.1. * A Dell OpenManage Kick-Start message is displayed. Occasionally, after uninstalling Remote Install agents from systems running Windows Server 2003, an error message appears at the next boot stating that the "ksagent" has experienced an error. You can ignore this message. It does not occur again the next time you boot. * A target system may show up with a status of "unmanaged" because of a network connection problem or a faulty configuration. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Remote Install agents on the target system. * When you use the "Server Assistant" CD to install the operating system on a PowerEdge 1655MC system, you have the option of installing Server Administrator. Ensure that the option to install Server Administrator with the operating system is NOT checked. If Server Administrator is installed before Remote Install, Remote Install is installed in "Do not configure mode," and the Remote Install image server cannot be installed over it. * Before you finish the configuration of a target system, the hostname displayed on the system table might not be the actual assigned hostname. * On a system running the Red Hat Linux operating system, when the user installs the Remote Install agent in text mode and the Server Administrator installation fails, then the Remote Install installation also fails. If this happens, use the GUI method. Select Remote Install for installation by selecting the check box for "Remote Install agent". * When a user upgrades from Remote Install version 1.0 to Remote Install version 1.1 on a system running Red Hat Linux 7.3, the user sees a message stating "Current version already installed" for Remote Install. Ignore this message. ###################################################################### Information in this document is subject to change without notice. (C) 2002-2003 Dell Inc.
