###################################################################### DELL OPENMANAGE(TM) REMOTE ASSISTANT II VERSION 2.5 ###################################################################### This document contains updated information on the Dell OpenManage Remote Assistant Card (DRAC) II and Dell OpenManage Remote Assistant software. See the "Dell OpenManage Remote Assistant Card User's Guide" for general information about DRAC II. You can find the guide on your documentation CD or at support.dell.com. Always see the Dell | Support website at support.dell.com for the most current information. ====================================================================== New Features ====================================================================== -------------------------------------------------------------------- Keyboard Data Encryption -------------------------------------------------------------------- All data from the remote keyboard to DRAC II is encrypted using a 40-bit encryption algorithm. Encryption is turned off by default. You can turn on encryption by using the "racconf" utility and the "racconf.ini" configuration file. The encryption configuration group is the last entry in the "racconf.ini" file. After encryption is turned on, any DRAC II Web Console version prior to version 2.5 will be unable to perform console redirection on the encrypted information. -------------------------------------------------------------------- SBS Support on Managed System -------------------------------------------------------------------- The DRAC II 2.5 agent may be installed on supported Dell(TM) PowerEdge(TM) servers running the Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Small Business Server (SBS) operating system. ====================================================================== Issues Resolved in This Release ====================================================================== -------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server -------------------------------------------------------------------- Changes in Windows 2000 Service Pack (SP) 2 inhibited previous releases of DRAC II from being able to perform console redirection on the Windows Security and Logon screens. This issue also affected Windows 2000 Japanese and Simplified Chinese operating systems with or without any service packs applied. Installing this release resolves these console redirection issues. Previous releases of DRAC II were not able to perform console redirection if the managed system used the default VGA driver included with the Windows 2000 operating system. This issue is corrected, although it is recommended to use the driver supplied by the manufacturer of the video card used in the system. Shutting down the managed system by using the DRAC II web console power management buttons would occasionally cause Windows to crash and display a blue screen in previous releases. This issue occurred once in every 10 power downs. The updated DRAC II driver for Windows in this release resolves this issue. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Novell(R) NetWare(R) -------------------------------------------------------------------- When using Dell OpenManage IT Assistant to view the summary of a managed system running NetWare, the DRAC II Remote Manageability information was not presented. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Non-Operating System Specific -------------------------------------------------------------------- When DRAC II is set up to issue alphanumeric pages on alerts, entering the wrong number in the Service Provider information can cause the DRAC II to dial the number excessively and lock up the system. If the correct number is used, then DRAC II will issue the page and will not cause system problems. For alphanumeric paging, the Service Provider number is not the pager number. The Service Provider number is a dial-in to a modem. Call your paging vendor to get this number. See the "DRAC II User's Guide" for instructions for correctly configuring DRAC II for paging on alerts. This issue is corrected in this release. Even if the wrong number is entered for the Service Provider, DRAC II dials its maximum number of tries (six times) and stops. The operating system is not affected. NOTE: If you issue a Test Page from IT Assistant using the wrong number, DRAC II will dial 18 times before stopping. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Dell PowerEdge 300, 1300, 1400 Systems -------------------------------------------------------------------- The PowerEdge 300, 1300, and 1400 systems do not use ESM firmware and, therefore, have no System Event Log that DRAC II can access. In DRAC II, version 2.5, the Event Log is grayed out as in prior versions but a message has been added to remind you that no system event log is available through DRAC II. To get system events, use IT Assistant. -------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerEdge 2550 System -------------------------------------------------------------------- When performing console redirection to the BIOS Setup screen of the PowerEdge 2550 system, it was not possible to scroll to the bottom of the setup menu. In some DOS applications, one could not scroll to the bottom of the text. The DRAC II, version 2.5 firmware resolves this issue. ====================================================================== Open Issues ====================================================================== The following section describes open issues with your DRAC II software. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Remote Floppy Boot -------------------------------------------------------------------- Network connection through the Remote Floppy Boot feature is not supported. If the diskette you are booting from contains a protected mode paging application such as "emm386.exe", Remote Floppy Boot may fail. The applications allow writing to the area of memory where the DRAC II option read-only memory (ROM) code is stored. If the option ROM code is overwritten, Remote Floppy Boot will not operate. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows NT(R) to Windows 2000 Upgrade -------------------------------------------------------------------- The DRAC II driver for Windows NT and the DRAC II driver for Windows 2000 are significantly different. The DRAC II Windows NT driver (drac2dev.sys) must be removed before upgrading Windows NT to Windows 2000. To perform a clean uninstallation of the DRAC II Windows NT driver, you must uninstall the DRAC II agent. After upgrading to Windows 2000, first install the DRAC II Windows 2000 driver (drac2wdm.sys) by using the "Hardware Wizard," and then reinstall the DRAC II agent. The DRAC II Windows 2000 driver and the DRAC II agents are included on the "Systems Management" CD. -------------------------------------------------------------------- DRAC II Does Not Support Streaming Audio or Video -------------------------------------------------------------------- Applications that provide visual and audio playback in real time are not supported by DRAC II console redirection. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Microsoft Internet Explorer Browser Problem When Using the DRAC II Web Console (DWC) --------------------------------------------------------------------- When you use Internet Explorer 4.0 or later, the screen refresh does not clear properly and the screen flickers when scrolling. Dell recommends that you maximize the browser when using the DWC and use a minimum 1024 x 768 pixels desktop area to minimize scrolling. When using Internet Explorer version 4.72.3612.1713, the DWC does not start properly the first time DWC is installed. The desktop flickers rapidly and the application stops. As a workaround, close the Internet Explorer and relaunch the DWC. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Test the Pager Feature in IT Assistant -------------------------------------------------------------------- When issuing a test page from the "Remote Assistant Card Configuration" window in IT Assistant, you might see the following error message: "OpenManage IT Assistant encountered the following error: Unable to update the DRAC II user configuration." The test page is issued even though the error message displays. Change the IT Assistant Connection Service Timeout from 60 to 120 seconds as a workaround. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Screen Does Not Scroll Using Mouse Scroll Wheel -------------------------------------------------------------------- ActiveX control cannot sense the scroll wheel movement directly; it needs to be translated into regular mouse movements and communicated to the ActiveX control. If the mouse driver does not support translation into regular mouse movements, the scroll wheel does not work. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Erratic Mouse Movement on a Managed System During Console Redirection -------------------------------------------------------------------- The mouse movement on a managed system that is under console redirection from the DRAC II Web Console appears jerky and possibly erratic. To avoid this problem, Dell recommends not using the mouse and keyboard on a managed system while it is under console redirection. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Console Redirection Service Fails to Display the Windows Graphics Test -------------------------------------------------------------------- The DRAC II Console Redirection Service performs graphical video capture. It does not directly access the video driver or hardware. When the Microsoft Display Test is performed, it directly manipulates the video driver/video controller. This display cannot be captured by the DRAC II Console Redirection Service because the test is being performed at a low level and it bypasses the normal video handling of Windows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Event Logs and POST Codes in Remote Assistant ---------------------------------------------------------------------- When accessing embedded server management (ESM) event logs and power-on self-test (POST) codes, the DRAC II software might experience a delay in displaying information because it is busy processing another task. When this delay occurs, wait approximately 15 seconds and then refresh the display by clicking "Refresh." NOTE: ESM is not supported on PowerEdge 300, 1300, or 1400 systems. The systems do not display a System Event Log. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The <Num Lock> Key and Console Redirection ---------------------------------------------------------------------- When you use the console redirection feature on DRAC II, <Num Lock> on the local and remote keyboards can be out of synchronization. If you attempt to use the numeric keypad on the remote console and the keypad does not seem to function properly, switch the state of the <Num Lock> key. The numeric keypad should now work properly on the remote console. Dell recommends not using the mouse and keyboard on a managed system while it is under console redirection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DRAC II Users on a Red Hat Linux Node Cannot be Deleted Through IT Assistant ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Users loaded into DRAC II either through the "racconf" utility or through IT Assistant on a managed system running the Red Hat Linux operating system cannot be deleted by using IT Assistant. While deleting, the user deletes the name from the "Users" tab on IT Assistant, the user name is still loaded on DRAC II and this user can log into the DRAC II by using the DWC. IT Assistant can overwrite the existing user with a new user by deleting the existing user before adding the new user. If you delete multiple existing users, you must add an equal number of new users to ensure that all existing users are overwritten. The "racconf" utility also may be used to delete existing users from DRAC II. The issue exists in Linux UCD_SNMP packages prior to ucd-snmp-4.2.1. You can find the latest SNMP source for Linux at "net-snmp.sourceforge.net." ===================================================================== Additional Information ===================================================================== -------------------------------------------------------------------- DRAC II Console Redirection Supported on Headless Systems -------------------------------------------------------------------- DRAC II supports console redirection on a "headless" system: a system that is running without a keyboard, mouse, or monitor attached. The headless system must be running Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 or later operating system. A utility file, "DRACAddHeadless.exe," installs a registry key required for redirection to work on a headless system. The file is included on the "Systems Management" CD in the "drac25" folder. Copy the utility to the system's hard drive and double-click the file to add the key. The key only installs on systems running Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 or later. ------------------------------------------------------- Installing recompiled DRAC II Driver RPM ------------------------------------------------------- The "Systems Management" CD software installation process installs the DRAC II driver binary files for the Red Hat kernels supported by Dell. If you use a different kernel and recompile the binary from the DRAC II driver source RPM, you must install the new binary manually. ------------------------------------------------------- Version Information of DRAC II Files ------------------------------------------------------- The files loaded for DRAC II software version 2.5 do not always display a version number beginning with 2.5. If no changes were made to the file from previous versions of DRAC II software, the file version number is the same as the last version at which the file was revised. ------------------------------------------------------- VT100 Features ------------------------------------------------------- To connect a management station COM port to the DRAC II serial port, use a standard null modem cable with DB-9 connectors and the DRAC II VT100 service cable assembly. Using VT100 emulation, DRAC II can: 1. Get firmware information. 2. Power cycle the host system. 3. Shut down the host system. 4. Turn on the host system. 5. Hard reset the host system. 6. Perform text/video redirection. 7. Get host system status. ------------------------------------------------------- DRAC II Installation Folders ------------------------------------------------------- Three folders in the DRAC II folder on the "Systems Management" CD contain setup executables for DRAC II software installation. The recommended method for DRAC II installation is to use the systems management installation menu. This method installs both the DRAC II client and the DRAC II management station software. This Setup is located in the "ClientMS" folder on the CD. However, if you are using DRAC II in a three-tiered network and want to install the DRAC II client and DRAC II management station on separate systems to save disk space, you may do so by manually installing from the "Client Only" and the "Management Station Only" folders. ------------------------------------------------------- Using the Racconf Utility Under Novell NetWare ------------------------------------------------------- The "racconf" utility is copied to your hard drive during the DRAC II agent installation. This copy is the DOS version of "racconf," which you need to be able to use the "racconf" utility. Before using the "raconf" utility, you must copy the utility and the default configuration file to the DOS file structure. To use the "racconf" utility, perform the following steps. The file and folder names provided are the defaults; adjust the instructions accordingly if you have altered the default names. 1. Type "unzip \system\dell\omanage\omsa\racconf.zip" from the NetWare prompt and press "Enter. This command unzips the DRAC II configuration file, "racconf.ini," to the SYS folder. 2. Type "edit" and press "Enter." 3. Press "Insert." 4. The "SYS" folder should be highlighted. If not, use the arrow keys to scroll the highlight bar to "SYS." Press "Enter" to select the "SYS" folder. 5. Scroll down the "SYS" folder list to place the highlight bar on "racconf.ini" and press "Enter." 6. Press "Enter" again. 7. Edit the "racconf.ini" file to change the desired parameters such as IP address and Administrator information. 8. Press "Esc." 9. Highlight "Yes" and press "Enter" to save the edited file. 10. Press "Esc." 11. Highlight "Yes" and press "Enter" to exit the Edit program. 12. Type "netbasic" and press "Enter." 13. Type "shell" and press "Enter." 14. Type "copy racconf.ini c:\nwserver\racconf.ini" and press Enter." 15. Type "copy system\dell\omanage\omsa\racconf.exe c:\nwserver\racconf.exe" and press "Enter." 16. Type "exit" and press "Enter" to leave the Netbasic shell. 17. Type "down" and press "Enter" to go to DOS. 18. At the DOS prompt, type "racconf /c racconf.ini" and press "Enter" to configure DRAC II. 19. Type "racconf /r" and press "Enter" to reset DRAC II. 20. Type "server" and press "Enter" to return to NetWare. ====================================================================== Information in this document is subject to change without notice.
