56K Drivers for Lucent Modem

Description

This update package installs an updated version of drivers for the Lucent modem in your Aptiva. The update requires about 2.5MB of hard drive space.

Once you have installed these drivers, your modem will comply with the ITU draft V.90 specification dated 2/98. You may experience increased performance from your modem after installing these drivers; however, many factors will affect your modem connection speed. We have developed a set of Frequently Asked Questions (v90faq.txt) that addresses some of the factors required for a high speed modem connection and other V.90 considerations. We strongly recommend that you review this information.

You should print this file (readme.txt) for reference before proceeding.

=== TO INSTALL THIS UPDATE

1) Create a directory named C:\518. Create it by double clicking on the "My Computer" icon located on the Windows desktop. Select the C: hard drive by double-clicking its icon. Select "File" located on the information bar and click on it. Highlight the word "New". A popup will occur. Highlight the word "Folder" and click it. The directory for the hard drive will appear with a new folder in it. The name for the new folder will be "New Folder". Change the name to 518 by typing 518 and then pressing the Enter key. You have created a folder named 518 on your C: drive.
2) Download the file LT518.EXE into C:\518 directory on your hard drive.
3) Double-click on the icon labeled LT518.EXE. The files contained inside LT518.EXE will be uncompressed when you run it. The files will appear in the C:\518 directory. When the process finishes, close the DOS window that was opened.
4) Double-click on the SETUP.EXE icon and follow the steps presented to you.
5) Please restart your machine when requested to do so.

=== TO VERIFY SUCCESSFUL INSTALLATION

To test successful installation, do the following:

1) From the Windows desktop, right-click on the 'My Computer' icon, and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
2) Select the 'Device Manager' tab.
3) Double-click on 'Modem'.
4) Double-click on 'LT Win Modem'.
5) Select the Driver tab.
6) Select the 'Driver File Details...' button.
7) The 'File version' should be 5.18.

=== NOTES AND CONSIDERATIONS

The capability of the modem you purchased with your Aptiva system should be reflected in the sales literature that came with your PC. If your Aptiva does not have a 56K-upgradeable Lucent modem, these new drivers will not make your 33.6K Lucent modem perform at "56K type" speeds. Also, if you have a 33.6K Lucent modem and you install these drivers; then the identifier in Device Manager-Modem will change from "AT&T Winmodem" to "LT Winmodem". You need to re-select the modem in your communication application(s) after applying this update. Contact your communications software providers for assistance with set-up if you have any problems.

DUN Objects

	After applying this update, some of your applications that use the modem may require modifications. Specifically, any applications that utilize Dial-Up Networking (DUN) objects. For instance, if you try to use IBM Update Connector without first being connected to the Internet, and you run into problems, you may need to do the following:

1) Double-click on the 'My Computer' icon on your Windows desktop.
2) Double-click on the 'Dial-Up Networking' icon in the 'My Computer' folder. If the DUN Wizard window opens, close it.
3) Right-click on the 'Reserved connection (do not use)' icon, and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
4) Select the 'Configure...' button.
5) If the 'Only connect at this speed' checkbox is selected (has a check mark), deselect it.

If that procedure does not enable you to connect, try renaming the DUN object, then running the application.

You may need to perform the steps described above for other applications that use DUN objects, such as IBM Global Network (IBM Internet Connection), or other Internet service providers (ISPs). You may also need to re-create the DUN object using the DUN 'Make New Connection' wizard, or re-setup your ISP software. Please contact your ISP for help if you have trouble connecting after the installation of this update.

Aptiva 2134 and 2176 Models

	Aptiva 2134 and 2176 Models may have the Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) speed locked at 115Kbps. That setting, if it exists, should be changed. If you have an Aptiva 2134 or 2176 model, please follow these steps:

1) Double click the "My Computer" icon located on the Windows desktop.
2) Click properties, then click the Device Manager tab.
3) Double click "Modem", then click on LT Winmodem.
4) Click the modem tab.
5) If the box in front of "Connect only at this speed" is checked, then uncheck it.

Returning to your Previous level of Drivers

	We have included the 4.23 level of drivers for your modem. If you want to return to that level, run EMER.BAT by selecting "Start" in the lower left hand corner of your desktop, then "Run" then typing in "C:\518\EMER.BAT" on the command line and clicking OK. EMER.BAT deletes the 5.18 files, then extracts EMER.EXE. The files contained inside EMER.EXE will be uncompressed when you run it. You can then run SETUP.EXE and install the 4.23 drivers by selecting "Start", then "Run", and then typing in "C:\518\SETUP.EXE".
