3. Installation

3.1 Installing ELSA graphics board for Windows 95/98

Remove your "old" VGA and put the ELSA graphics board into your
computer. If your ELSA graphics adapter contains a VGA-switch,
be sure that it's position is set to the "1" position (VGA
        enabled).
On startup Windows 95/98 detects the ELSA graphics board as
"PCI early VGA Device" or a "PCI standard VGA adapter" and
prompts for a manufacturer disk. Advanced users can now install
as described in 3.3, Microsoft WHQL confirm way to install.
If you prefer an easy way to install the driver or the driver is
downloaded as EXE from the web you should first confirm Windows
request to install a "PCI Standard VGA adapter". Later you can
start the EXE or install by WINNERware CD.

3.1 Installation from WINNERware CD

During a running Windows 95/98 session insert the WINNERware CD
into your CD-ROM. Normally after the CD is read, a setup is
started and guides through installation. In case 'Auto Insert
Notification' is disabled in your system, the setup has to be
started manually by double clicking its icon in the root of CD.
Now you can choose the components to be installed. After
rebooting the system your monitor is recognized and installed.
A resolution and color depth can be chosen now.

3.2 Installing downloaded driver packages

Driver packages from the web are self-extracting EXEs. The files
are temporary copied to e.g. c:\elsainst directory and an
automatic driver setup is started. Tools are installed, too.
After finishing the setup or canceling the procedure the
extracted installation files are deleted, including the
        temporary created folder.

3.3 Microsoft WHQL confirm way to install

After Windows recognized the ELSA graphics adapter choose
'Have Disk...'. If you are updating the driver manually, select
'change...' in the advanced settings of the diplay properties.
Now browse through the ELSA CD and select the proper display
        driver subdirectory (e.g. GLORIA\SYNERGY\WIN9X\STANDARD).Windows
will copy the driver files and prompt you to reboot the computer.
After restarting, Windows is running with the ELSA display
drivers active. If your ELSA graphics adapter is not the primary
display adapter in Windows 98, you have to activate the hardware
by clicking on the connected monitor bitmap in the global windows
        display settings.

3.4 Installation extension

The drivers installation routine will additionally create the
ELSA Settings and ELSA 3D Settings property pages and install an
        OpenGL ICD.
The drivers setup included in self-extracting driver packages
or the WINNERware CD will install additional tools like WINman
Suite and ELSAinfo. In case your graphics adapter is provided
with video I/O capabilities, the setup will install the software
        components for these devices, too.

In all following Windows sessions you can change the resolution
        without rebooting your system.

5. Release notes

5.1 DirectDraw/Direct3D support

The display driver do support DirectDraw/Direct3D from
DirectX, but to use it in an application, you must install
        DirectDraw/Direct3D. The Microsoft DirectDraw/Direct3D
components are not included in the standard retail version of
Windows 95. You need an installation of DirectX 5 or higher.

To install DirectDraw/Direct3D use the CDSETUP from your
        WINNERware CD.

5.2 AGP and Windows 95

AGP is supported only by the Windows version OSR-2.1. This is
available after upgrading a Windows 95b (OSR2) version by the
        USB-Update 'USBSUPP.EXE'.
The version number of your installed Windows can be found in
        the registry under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
        Windows\CurrentVersion\Version and VersionNumber.
        The Entries for OSR-2.1 are:

        Version "Windows95"
        VersionNumber "4.03.1212" or "4.03.1214"

6. Known Bugs and Operating Notes

This section documents known anomalies or problems and gives
        hints on work arounds.

6.1 Version 4.10.01.0401

6.1.1 Installation over an nVIDIA-driver

If you install the ELSA Display Driver over an existing nVIDIA
        display driver, the key:

        HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OpenGLDrivers\
        RIVA128

        will not be actualized.
        Please replace "nv3ogl.dll" with "elsavelo.dll"

6.1.2 OpenGL

The hardware support for OpenGL only works at 16Bpp up to
        800x600 Pixel.

Please make sure to backup your registryfiles(system.dat and
user.dat) before editing your Windows registry.

Some OpenGL based screensavers, e.g. 3D Pipes, may crash some
systems if working in powersaving modes.

6.1.3 There may occure misrepresentation of colors and displays by
viewing MPEG files with "ELSA Motion" extension boards.
