Please read this entire file before upgrading your firmware. How to Load the Firmware Step 1. Before upgrading your modem, you must know the com port number and IRQ address that your modem is on. These are the STANDARD com port and IRQ combinations: COM 1 (03f8), IRQ 4 where 03f8 is COM 1s hex address COM 2 (02f8), IRQ 3 COM 3 (03e8), IRQ 4 COM 4 (02e8), IRQ 3 If you have determined that your modem is on one of these com port/IRQ settings, proceed to step 3. Step 2. Determining what com port your modem is on: Windows 95 - Double-click on the following in order: My Computer, Control Panel, System. Click once on the Device Manager tab. Double-click on Modem and on your modem. Click on the Modem tab, and write down the com port number. Then click on the Resources tab and write down the Input/Output Range setting and the Interrupt Request (IRQ) number. Close all windows. Note: If there is no Resource tab in the Modem Properties window, then your modem is probably an external and is using one of the Standard Settings listed above. Windows 3.x - If you are initializing the modem at boot with Portwiz, simply type "edit autoexec.bat" at a C:\ prompt and write down the settings from the line that starts with the word portwiz. The first value is the com port hex address, and the second is the IRQ. If you used jumpers to set the com port and IRQ you can use the modem manual to reference the jumper settings. Step 3. Running K56LOAD.EXE - If you have downloaded the self extracting loader, you should create a new directory or folder and type the name of the file to extract it there. The program is executed by typing k56load <firmware> ENTER at the DOS prompt, where <firmware> is the filename of the firmware you wish to load (for example either Z1000A40.56x for the external modem, or Z1002A40.56i for the internal modem). Letter case is unimportant. Example: At a C:\firmware\ prompt where my files are stored I type k56load z1000a40.56x and hit the Enter key, I will successfully launch the program and attempt to load the firmware for the external modem. Step 4. Program responses - You will first be prompted for the com port on which your modem resides. If your modem is on one of the four STANDARD com port/IRQ selections listed in Step 1, then simply type in the number of the com port. If your modem is on a non-standard com port/IRQ setting, then type S to proceed to the Special Settings portion of the program. Once there, you will be prompted for the hex address of the com port, and the number of the IRQ. For example, if my modem was on COM 3, IRQ 11, I would type in 03e8 then 11. Refer to the chart above for the hex addresses for the four possible com ports. Step 5. Loading the firmware - This program will take you through the steps necesscary to send the flash file to you modem. You are given the option to abort just prior to the upload in case you are not comfotable with the settings you provided the program with. The program will report its actions and progress as it proceeds. IMPORTANT: ONCE THE FIRMWARE UPLOAD TO THE MODEM BEGINS YOU MUST NOT INTERRUPT IT! You will be warned when this is about to happen. If the upload is interrupted, you will have to rerun K56LOAD. Upon successful completion of the firmware upload, your modem will be tested, some settings will be restored, and you will be notified that the procedure is complete. It is recommended that you reboot your computer after a sucessful upgrade. Some notes on Plug and Play: The upgrade you will perform on your modem may change certain things about your modem that might change the way the modem looks to your computer hardware. In the instance of such a situation we provide the recommended INF file to be used with the included flash file. The procedure for installing the new INF file: Step 1. Removal of existing modem entry. Removing the modem entry can be done in Control Panel, Modems. Select the current modem entry that is associated with your modem and click on the "Remove" button. Step 2. Addition of new modem using INF file. You can add a new modem in Control Panel, Modems by clicking on the "Add" button. When the Add New Modem dialog comes up, click on the box that says "Don't detect my modem I will select it from a list". Click on the "Next" button. When the Select Modem dialog comes up, click on the "Have disk" button. point the explorer dialog to the location of the new INF file, select the file, and then click on the "OK" button. You may be asked to select the modem you have from a list of available modems. Do so, click the "OK" button which should finish the installation. TROUBLESHOOTING: External K56 Flex Modems: Due to differences in Serial Port timing on certain PCs, an error message may occur near the end of the upgrade process. A DOS utility program (mconfig.exe) is included to complete the upgrade in this situation. If you see the following message from the k56load program: "Initiating modem restore .......................... Your modem did not respond to a restore command 10 times! If you would like this program to send the command again, continue (y or n) -->" Respond with "n" and let the loading program proceed with it's final tests. When the loader completes you should get the message "The firmware upgrade was successful!" At the DOS prompt, type the following command: mconfig <return> The menu screen will walk you through the operation. It should only take about 10 seconds.
