How to prevent MS Internet components from installing in OSR2 ------------------------------------------------------------- To prevent installation of Microsoft Internet components during an (automated or manual) installation of Windows 95 OSR2, do the following: Switch to your Windows 95 source directory, e.g. F:\WIN95. Now type extract /a precopy2.cab setuppp.inf This will extract the installation core file SETUPPP.INF into your Windows 95 source directory. Now load SETUPPP.INF into a text editor and comment out (use ;) all references (lines) to the following INF files: athena.inf ohare.inf mos.inf inetmail.inf This will prevent MS Internet Explorer and MS Internet Mail & News from installing. To get rid of the Online Services folder, comment out references to msinfo.inf as well. To even get rid of Active Movie, comment out references to quartz.inf as well. Now save SETUPPP.INF and write down the new file size of SETUPPP.INF. Now load LAYOUT.INF (already there in the Windows 95 source directory) into your text editor and perform exactly the same modifications you've done to SETUPPP.INF before (comment out lines). Finally, search for a line in LAYOUT.INF that reads setuppp.inf=2,,xxxx where xxxx represents the file size of the original SETUPPP.INF file. Change this line to read setuppp.inf=0,,yyyy where yyyy represents the new file size of the modified SETUPPP.INF. That's all, no need to repackage SETUPPP.INF into PRECOPY2.CAB, just leave it in the source directory. Proceed with your manual or automated installation as normal and you will * never encounter *any* problems due to the lack of MS Internet components in OSR2 * save network bandwidth by transferring less data during a typical setup * save 31 Megs of disk space on the workstation * have an even a bit more faster and smoothly running Windows 95 OSR2 This information is contributed by all the helpful people who posted suggestions and solutions to the OSR2 FAQ at http://www.compuclinic.com/osr2faq/ Created June 8, 1998 by Ralf Buschmann.
