[Part 1]

Creating ALN-315 service Boot Disk for LANDesk Configuration Manager
(LCM Version 1.5)

The LCM clients can run service boots with two methods. One is the LANDesk
Service Agent (LSA) flash in BIOS. Another is to boot from the Service Boot
Disk. If you don't use the LSA in BIOS, you need to make a service Boot Disk.
With the Boot Disk, the LCM clients can boot with an empty hard disk and
perform service boots to format a hard disk, install an operating system,
install an executable program, or copy files. To create a Boot Diskette :

Step 1: Make a Boot Floppy Diskette Using a INTEL Supported NIC Driver

Since it is easier to modify an existing LANDesk Service Boot Diskette than
to start from scratch, begin by creating an EtherExpress(TM) PRO/100B Boot
Diskette. (Detailed instructions on how to do this can be found in the LANDesk
Configuration Manager System Guide.)

1. From the Start menu, select Programs-> Intel LANDesk Management ->
   Utilities-> Boot Disk.
2. Connect to your LANDesk Configuration Manager system.
3. Highlight the "Intel EtherExpress PRO/100B, PRO/10+ PCI Adapter" from the
   list Network Adapters list.
4. Insert a formatted 3 1/2 inch floppy into the LANDesk Configuration Manager
   floppy drive.
5. Click the "Build Disk" button.
6. From the "Copy files to:" drop-down list choose [-a-], then click the OK
   button and follow the screen prompts.

Step 2: Modify the contents of the Diskette to match the usage of ALN-315.

Use the LANDesk Service Agent Boot Diskette you created in Step 1.

1. Insert the Boot Diskette in your floppy drive. (For this example we will
   assume drive A:)
2. Delete the following file from the diskette.
        A:\NET\E100B.DOS
Note : If you the LCM version 1.5 Beta 2, you may not find the A:\NET directory.

3. Copy ALN315.DOS from the <Win95> directory of your ALN-315 Driver Diskette#2
   to the A:\NET directory.
4. Edit A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT and add ( /unsupported) to the line that contains
   AUTODETE.EXE. This can be done with any text editor such as DOS Edit or
   Windows Notepad.
5. Edit A:\NET\SYSTEM.INI to reflect the NDIS driver name of the ALN-315.
   In the [network drivers] section, change the parameter netcard=E100B.DOS
   to ALN315.DOS
6. Edit A:\NET\PROTOCOL.INI to reflect the driver name of the ALN-315.
   Replace the ms$e100b names with e321$s100m. using the same combination
   of upper case or lower case letters as the names being replaced.
   Under [network.setup] change the following parameters to e321$s100m

netcard=e321$s100m,1,E321$S100M,1
lana0= e321$s100m,1,tcpip

Under [TCPIP],[NDISPROT] change the BINDINGS= ms$E100B parameter to
BINDINGS=e321$s100m.

Add a section named [E321$s100M] as follows :

[E321$S100M]
DriverName=ALN315$
SLOT=16
SIA_MODE=AUTODETECT
DATA_RATE=MB100
TX_THRESHOLD=LW1024

Step 3 : Try a Test Service Boot

Before you try a test Service Boot, make sure that you have run Service Boot
Manager and created a service, a menu and assigned at least one user to that
menu.

[Part 2]

Modify for the installing Windows NT 4.0 Service Boot in the LANDesk
Configuration Manager

When you use a boot disk to boot a LCM client and install Windows NT 4.0, the
NT will install the DECchip 21142 driver for your ALN-315. We need to make
some modifications to install the correct ALN-315 driver.

[Step 1]
First, unpack the file OEMNADZZ.IN_ in the
D:\Program Files\Intel\LCM\Server\Public\os\WINNT\ directory.
You can use the EXPAND command. Then edit the file OEMNADZZ.INF.

In the [PCIOptions] section, add a line for ALN-315

[PCIOptions]
ALN315            <------- Newly added

In the [PCIFilename] section, add a line

[PCIFilename]
drvlib.nic\ALN315\oemsetup.inf     <------ Newly added

And in the section [PCIOptionsTextENG], add a line

[PCIOptionsTextENG]
ALN315      = "AcerLAN ALN-315 10/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet Adapter"  <--- Newly added

[Step 2]
Copy all files in the A:\NT40 directory of the Driver Disk#2 to the
D:\Program Files\Intel\LCM\Server\Public\os\WINNT\drvlib.nic\ALN315 directory.
There should have the following files:
OEMSETUP.INF
ALN315.SYS
NT40.TXT

[Step 3]
Edit the answer file in the ansfiles directory.

Make the following changes,

[Network]
;DetectAdapters = DetectAdaptersSection <------ Modify here (remark it!)
InstallAdapters = InstallALN315             <------ Newly added line

and add two more sections.

[InstallALN315]                             <------ Newly added section
ALN315 = ALN315Params                       <------ Newly added

[ALN315Params]                              <------ Newly added section
ConnectionType = "0"                        <------ Newly added

[Step 4]
Try a Test Service Boot to install Windows NT.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
