NEC SUPERSCRIPT 870 Driver for Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0 June 1998 This file contains the following sections: 1. Installation Instructions 2. Known Anomalies and Incompatibilities 3. Contacting NEC Technical Support 4. Copyright and Trademark Information 1. Installation Instructions Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 3.1x ---------------------------------------- This installer copies the NEC SuperScript 870 driver, the NEC SuperScript Status Monitor and this readme file into the proper locations for your version of Windows. If you find you need to re-install the driver for any reason, it is recommended that you first de-install the existing SuperScript 870 printer driver, and then proceed with the re-installation. After installing this software, it is recommended that you reboot Windows. The installer will give you an opportunity to do so at the end of the installation process. Windows NT 4.0 -------------- The SuperScript 870 Solutions CD ships with a Windows NT universal driver. To install this driver, use the Add Printer Wizard. When prompted select the directory \Ss870\WINNT from CD-ROM drive. Follow the Add Printer Wizard instructions to install the driver. Note that the Windows NT 4.0 universal driver is incompatible with earlier versions of Windows NT, Windows 95, and Windows 98. 2. Known Anomalies and Incompatibilities Status Monitor Issues: If you change the network captured port after the Status Monitor has loaded, the Status Monitor may not provide accurate status. To correct this problem, simply quit the Status Monitor and restart it after changing the captured port within the NEC SuperScript 870 driver. Printer Driver Issues: Advanced Video Drivers: In some instances, when running high resolution video drivers under Windows 95 with only 8 megabytes of memory, GPFs will occur when you attempt to print. This is due to the limited amount of memory available to both the Video and Printer drivers. Adding memory to your system should solve this problem. Application Compatibility Issues: Adobe Photoshop: versions of Adobe Photoshop prior to version 3.0.5 are incompatible with the EMF Spool Data format. To print with these earlier versions of Photoshop, either change the spooled data format (open driver, select Details Tab, Spool Settings button, change Spool Data Format from EMF to RAW.) or upgrade to either Photoshop 3.0.5 or 4.0. Adobe Photoshop 3.04 and 4.0: Horizontal banding lines can occur when printing a landscape oriented document using the N-Up printing feature. These will not appear when the final document is printed at its true size. Clipping problems can occur when printing on a document with landscape orientation that has an image that exceeds the page length. Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 and 3.01: When running on Windows 95 has certain incompatibilities with our driver which may interfere with printing. Watermarks are also oriented incorrectly when printing in landscape mode. Please contact Adobe Technical Support to see if an upgrade is available. Adobe PageMaker: the user must take care when printing with Adobe PageMaker to ensure that the documentation orientation is set correctly in both the Printer Setup and Document Setup dialogs. If not, PageMaker may not always pass on to the printer the correct page orientation for the file being printed. Claris FileMaker Pro v3.0: When printing with FileMaker Pro v3.0 you may receive an 'Application Error' page fault. This is a known incompatibility with FileMaker 3.0 and the NEC SuperScript driver. The solution to this problem is to upgrade to FileMaker 4.0 or use the HP LaserJet IIP driver when printing from this application. Corel Draw 7: CorelDraw has been shown to cause an 'Invalid Page Fault' when closing the Printer Setup dialog. Corel is aware of this bug. Please contact Corel Corporation for a possible update if you use and print from this application. Corel Draw 8: The SuperScript 870 driver special effects buttons do not get refreshed properly when the driver settings are modified while in Corel 8. Corel Envoy 7: In some cases the top and right edges of Envoy files may be clipped by up to a quarter of an inch. There is no known fix for this problem at this time. Corel Presentation 8: While printing complex documents in N-Up printing mode, portions of the document may not print out correctly. To solve this problem, disable the wait time out feature in the printer administration dialog when you experience this problem with a document. Be sure to restore this setting once you have finished printing from within the application. Corel WordPerfect 7: WordPerfect 7 uses PFPPOP to handle printing. It has been determined that PFPPOP in some cases will keep the NEC SuperScript 870 Driver open after printing. When this occurs, users will not be able to de-install the NEC SuperScript 870 driver. The solution to this problem is to either re-start Windows 95, or to use the Task Manager to close the PFPPOP task. Corel Ventura 7: When printing documents from Ventura 7 and using the 2-Sided printing functions of the NEC SuperScript 870 driver, it is recommended that you turn off Printing Tips dialog. (Open Setup Tab, select 2-Sided Printing Button, deselect 'Display Help Messages' checkbox.) If not deselected, some portions of text may not be printed correctly. Macromedia Freehand 7.0: Please contact Macromedia for a software patch update to Freehand 7.0. When Watermarks are selected from the setup page while printing a Freehand document under Windows 95, the SuperScript 870 printer Icon would be removed from the Printer Window. After updating Freehand, this problem no longer occurs. Micrografx Designer 4.1: When running Micrografx Designer 4.1 under Windows 3.1x, text on a curved path will not print correctly. The only known fix is to upgrade to Windows 95. Micrografx Designer 6.0: There are some cases where dark colors composed on top of dark backgrounds (i.e., dark blue on black) will not be differentiated from the background color on the printed output. If this occurs, we suggest that you select a lighter foreground color. Microsoft Excel '97: When printing all worksheets from the same workbook as a single print job, you may not be able to use special effects such as N-Up, Booklet Printing, Duplexing, etc. We recommend that you select worksheets and then print them using print selected worksheets instead of using print workbook. Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0: When running Windows 3.1x and printing slides with layout options, the application will not properly refresh the window after printing has completed. This problem is only cosmetic and can be fixed by closing and re-opening the file. The problem can be prevented by keeping the "Print Manager" of Windows 3.1x open while printing. Quark, Inc. QuarkXpress 3.32: Horizontal banding lines can occur when printing a document using the N-Up printing feature. These will not appear when the final document is printed at its true size. 3.
