=========================================

This CD-RW drive is designed to meet the CD-ROM reader part
of the plug & play specifications of WIN95/98/ME/2000/XP.
If using the CD-RW drive in this environment, no driver installation
is necessary for the read functionality.
If using Windows NT or IBM OS/2 Warp, the operating
system automatically loads the CD-ROM reader accordingly.

Note: Drivers mentioned above are part of the Operating
Systems and not available from NEC.

Following sentence describing the installation of standard
CD-ROM reader You are able to use the CD-RW drive too.

To install your CD-ROM read for use with MS-DOS, you need:

* An IBM personal computer or compatible with 80386 or later
processor chip and a minimum of 640K of conventional memory.
* A CD-ROM reader.
* The driver NECATAPI.SYS stored on Your System (e.g. drive C:
- You will find the drive on Your CD-RW software CD-ROM MISC/DOS_DRV/)
* MS-DOS Version 3.1 or later.
* Microsoft MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions (MSCDEX.EXE) (included).

Note: Microsoft MS-DOS CD-ROM Extensions(MSCDEX.EXE) enables the
computer to access the CD-ROM reader.

----------------------------------------------
CD-ROM DEVICE DRIVER INSTALLATION
----------------------------------------------

Certain software programs must be loaded in order to access a
CD-ROM disc in your CD-ROM reader as if it were an MS-DOS formatted
disk. The CD-ROM software files must be properly installed in your
computer before the CD-ROM reader can read a CD-ROM disc.

First copy the file NECATAPI.SYS to Your system.

The NECATAPI.SYS file is the device driver. The CONFIG.SYS file
specifies this file, thereby allowing your computer to identify
and operate the CD-ROM reader.

Most computers will function adequately with most of the default
settings for this file. However, there are some parameters that
can be changed, if necessary. This section explains the function
of each parameter. Use a text editor, such as MS-DOS "EDLIN", or
"EDIT" to modify the appropriate line in your CONFIG.SYS file.

For the NECATAPI.SYS device driver, the line in CONFIG.SYS is in
the following format.

DEVICE=[drive:][path]NECATAPI.SYS
/D:device-name [PIO=n]

Note: The actual device driver entry is not truncated and should
be placed entirely on one line in the CONFIG.SYS file.

[drive:][path]NECATAPI.SYS
Specifies the location (drive and directory) and name of the
device driver file.

/D:device-name
Specifies the device name of the CD-ROM reader (8 characters
maximum). This must be identical to the device name specified
in the MSCDEX.EXE parameters. For example:

DEVICE=C:\CDROM\NECATAPI.SYS /D:NECCD

[PIO=n]
To enable PIO transfer mode, add the switch 'PIO=n'

n:    PIO Mode (1, 2, 3 or 4)

The default transfer mode is DMA.

For example if the drive should work in PIO mode 4 - not in DMA
mode - the syntax in the CONFIG.SYS file could be as follows:

DEVICE=C:\CDROM\NECATAPI.SYS /D:NECCD PIO=4

Note: The actual device driver entry is not truncated and
should be placed entirely on one line in the CONFIG.SYS
file.

Note: For information regarding setting CD ROM drive as Master
or Slave, please refer to your user's manual.

-------------------------------------------
REGARDING SMARTDRV
-------------------------------------------

SMARTDRV attached to MS-DOS 6.2 (PC-DOS 6.3) or later is supposed
to CD-ROM caching. If CD-ROM caching is enabled, it is possible
that CD-ROM does not work properly.(such as Photo CD)
In this case, you should add the following /U switch to disable
CD-ROM caching.

SMARTDRV.EXE /U

-------------------------------------------
REGARDING WINDOWS 3.xx
-------------------------------------------

Windows 3.xx are using same device driver as DOS, no additional driver
needed.

Note: For Windows 3.xx don't use the 32 bit hard disk access, because
this mode is not supported for CD-ROM readers.

-------------------------------------------
REGARDING JustLink
-------------------------------------------

This CD-RW drive using JustLink to prevent buffer under-run errors.

Note: To disable or enable drive's buffer under run technology you need
a writer S/W supporting this function (default: JustLink is ON)
