  Installation instructions:
  =========================

  1) Configuration of CD-ROM reader:

  The reader can be configured by setting or removing jumpers on
  the rear panel of the reader. According to the IDE specification
  two IDE devices can be connected to one IDE controller. One of the
  devices is handled as a master device the other one is handled as
  a slave. A third status called single can be used if only one
  device is connected. Defining the only device to single status
  can make the start up phase faster. If there are two devices
  connected one of them has to be jumpered as a master while the
  other one has to be in slave mode.

  Please note that only the master device is bootable. The hard disk
  drive e.g. containing system files and the operating system
  has to be jumpered in master mode.

  The following diagrams shows the jumper setting:

  Single Drive 123 ( If two drives )
  ÚÄÄÄ¿                 ÚÄÄÄ¿
  ³³::³       or        ³::³³ * default jumper setting for CDR-1400/1600
  ÀÄÄÄÙ                 ÀÄÄÄÙ   is master mode

  2: Slave
  3: Master

  2) Driver installation:

  Before you are able to work with an IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM reader in a DOS/
  Windows environment you need to install the driver which is part of
  this floppy disk. Please proceed according to the following
  description:

  1. Copy the file "NEC_IDE.SYS" to your harddisk C:.
  2. Switch to drive C: and load the file CONFIG.SYS using an editor
     (e.g. EDIT).
  3. Add the following line to the CONFIG.SYS file:
     DEVICE=C:\[path\]NEC_IDE.SYS /d:neccd
  4. Save the modified CONFIG.SYS file on your harddisk.
  5. Now edit the file AUTOEXEC.BAT. You have to insert following command,
     if possible at the beginning of the AUTOEXEC.BAT:
     C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /d:neccd /m:10
  6. After saving the AUTOEXEC.EXE you need to reboot your system.

  (Note: Starting with DOS-Version 6.0 the MSCDEX.EXE file is part of the
  operating system. If you are using an older IBM-DOS/MSDOS release you
  might find the MSCDEX.EXE file in some other directory on your harddisk
  or you have to contact your next PC dealer to get it.)

  Important:

  Using Windows you have to make sure that the 32-Bit harddisk access is
  disabled, because CD-ROM readers are not working in this mode.

  CAUTION:

  Customer using PC`s with DMA capability they should found automatic

  You may be warned to use the CDROM drive in DMA mode without installing
  the EMM386.EXE memory manager of MS-DOS Ver. 6.22.

  NEC reserves the right to make changes in the product without reservation
  and without notification to its users.
