Readme.txt Driver File Contents (Unknown.zip)

1. I have acquired a modem card along with a CD that presumably contained drivers for it.

The card comprises a Conexant chip 11242-11. The device is identified on PCI as VEN_14F1 DEV_2045 SUBSYS_204514F1.

2. I had a hellish experience trying to install the software for this modem:
a) By default Windows installs a Generic SoftK56 driver. This does not work (causes Windows to crash and restart when trying to activate the modem or even view device properties in the device manager).

b) The CD contained several drivers. I have been able to install (by force) one of the drivers. The device was identified in the device manager as a "SoftV92 Data Fax Modem". No Windows crashes, etc. and it even the diagnostics (accessible via the device property sheets) was OK. However the modem simply didn't dial out.

c) I downloaded several drivers from the Internet (looked for drivers for the above PCI vendor ID and device ID). Nothing worked.

d) When Windows crashed after installing the default "Generic SoftK56 driver", after it was restarted there was a prompt saying that Windows has recovered from a serious error and asking for a permission to report it to Microsoft. I permitted it and at the end was brought to an Internet page saying that this problem was resolved by an update from Microsoft and advising me to go to Windows Update and fetch the update there.

I tried, however the directions were misleading. In the end I was able to find how to get to the Microsoft Update catalog. There I at first searched for Conexant drivers for SoftV92 Data Fax Modem and was indeed able to find several such, however none of them worked.

At the end I searhced for "Generic SoftK56" driver and was able to find one from Conexant. This finally solved the problem.
