2. GD5436/46 OS/2 Driver diskette: files, utilities and their functions
====================================================================

The driver files are on one HD-diskette. The specific topics
are included in the package. No more additional files are needed.

During the installation a log-file is written. The default path and filename is \OS2\INSTALL\CIRRUS.LOG. Optionally the parameter /L<n>:<Log-file-path \ Log-file-name> can be used for the install programm. <n> is a value from 1 to 3 and it allows specify how much information is captured. Logging level 1 will only capture errors while level 3 will log all events.

3. Installation instructions:
=============================

Preparation:
------------
a) OS/2 ist not yet installed:

   Perform a complete installation with 'VGA' as video adapter (to avoid
   eventual setup problems).
   Then start the driver setup procedure as described below.

b) OS/2 is already installed with a working video driver:

   Start the driver setup procedure as described below.

c) OS/2 is already installed - but the video driver is not working:
   1.) OS/2 2.11: Install the standard VGA driver (e.g. per SVGA OFF or
   SETVGA.CMD or re-installation).
   Then start the driver setup procedure as described below.
   2.) OS/2 Warp: Perform a 'Recovery startup' with option 'Install
   VGA driver automatically'.
   Then start the driver setup procedure as described below.

   Performing a 'Recovery startup' (under Warp only):
   --------------------------------------------------
   Reboot the system. When a small white rectangle appears in the upper left
   hand corner of the screen, press ALT + F1 and select the desired option
   from the recovery menu.

Driver Setup Procedure:
-----------------------

- Open an OS/2 window command prompt, insert the 'GD5436/46 OS/2 driver
  diskette' and call INSTALL.EXE,for example by
                           A:INSTALL

  The install program now copies all files to the harddisk, configures the
  driver for the system und generates the available video modes. If the driver
  is installed under OS/2 2.11 or 2.11 SMP the icon "WIN-OS/2 Font Size" is
  created on the desktop for changing the size of the system font within
  WIN-OS/2. Finally the display settings can be changed.

  - Always agree, if you are asked whether newer files shall be replaced by
    older ones.

- Shutdown and restart the system to make the changes effective.

- Once the drivers are installed you may change monitor type, resolution,
  color depth and refresh rate at any time via 'System Setup - System - Screen'
  without re-installing the driver.

- Starting with Warp v3 no shutdown is necessary for changing the refresh
  rate.It immediately takes effect if it is accepted within 15 seconds during
  the test.

- Starting with Warp v3 a new resolution has to be tested and confirmed. It is
only used after the next shutdown if a test was done sucessfully.

4. CID Installation Instructions
================================

With the help of the following hints it is possible to install the CIRRUS
GD5436/46 video driver without user dialog.

This is recommended if the driver shall be installed on several PCs with an
identical video configuration which are able to access a common network
server. In this case it is no more necessary to use the CIRRUS driver
diskette as well as the various user dialogs.

Response file
-------------

The CID installation is done via response file.
The response file contains one instruction for the write mode and one
instruction for the desired resolution, colors and refresh rate.

Examples for write mode:
write_mode = OVERWRITE
         (overwrite newer video driver files on the client-PC with older
          versions from the driver diskette. This mode should be used as
          default)
      or
write_mode = REFRESH
         (DO NOT overwrite newer video driver files on the client-PC with older
          versions from the driver diskette)

Examples for resolution, colors and refresh rate:
initial_resolution = (
                       x = 800
                       y = 600
                       bpp = 16
                       refreshrate = 85;
                     )
        or
initial_resolution = (
                       x = 1024
                       y = 768
                       bpp = 8
                       refreshrate = 75;
                     )

The file INSTALL.RSP contains more informations and examples.

Attention:The instruction "refreshrate" doesn't work in this version. If a DDC-
enabled monitor is connected, the optimum refresh rate according to the DDC
data is used for the desired resolution (even if an other refresh rate is
specified in the response file). If a non-DDC-enabled monitor is connected, the
DEFAULT monitor (with 60Hz refreshrate) is selected automatically. If you want
to avoid this, you must perform a master installation and copy the master
\os2\video.cfg to the target system (when the installation via response file is
finished).

Requirements
------------

1. OS/2 2.11 or v3 is already installed properly on the client-PC.
2. A CIRRUS GD5436 or GD5446 video controller is installed in the client-PC
   with same video memory size (1 MB or 2 MB) as in the PC where the manual
   driver installation was done.
3. A monitor is attached to the client-PC which has at least the same video
   frequencies as the monitor of the PC where the manual driver installation
   was done.
4. There is a network connection of the client-PC to a server.

Installation
------------

1. Install the video driver manually on a PC under the requirements as
mentioned above. Follow the instructions of chapter 3. Save the file \OS2\VIDEO.CFG to a diskette afterwards.

2. Create a directory on the server-PC (e. g. \IMG\GD5446) and copy all files
of the CIRRUS driver diskette to this directory.

3. Copy the file VIDEO.CFG which you saved previously to this directory.

4. Edit the response file in the same directory according to the instructions
above.

5. Open an OS/2 window on the client-PC on which the video driver shall be
installed and change to the directory on the server-PC where the files were
copied to. Start the install program:

      INSTALL /R:<Response file> /L<n>:<Log-file path \ Log-file name>

The source directory is the directory where INSTALL.EXE is located. The destination drive is the OS/2 bootdrive.

Example:  INSTALL /R:INSTALL.RSP /L3:X:\LOG\GD5446.LOG

6. The video driver will now be installed without futher intervention of the
user. Afterwards copy the file VIDEO.CFG from the server to the directory \OS2\ of the local OS/2 bootdrive.

7. After the next reboot the video driver will be active with the desired
resolution and refresh rate.

Integration into a LCU-REXX-command-procedure
---------------------------------------------

For CID installation of the video driver by using a LCU-REXX-command-
procedure statements must be added to the Product Data Section:
Example:

x.GD5446 = 63
x.63.name = 'Cirrus GD5436/46 Driver'
x.63.statevar = ''
x.63.instprog = 'x:\img\GD5446\install.exe        ', /* Install program */
                '/R:x:\img\GD5446\install.rsp     ', /* Response file   */
                '/L3:x:\log\GD5446\gd5446.log     ', /* Log file        */
x.63.rspdir = ''
x.63.default = ''

The constant NUM_INSTALL_PROGS in the last line of the Product Data Section
must be increased by 1:
Example:

NUM_INSTALL_PROGS = 63

The following statements must be added at the end of the Installation
Section of the LCU-REXX-command-procedure for starting the installation
procedure of the video driver:

when OVERALL_STATE = 2 then do
          if RunInstall(x.GD5446) == BAD_RC then exit
          Call CheckBoot
        end

Pay attention to start the installation of the video driver not before the
workplace-shell (WPS) is active. Otherwise the PM-programm INSTALL cannot be
executed.

5. Limitations / problems / bugs / hints:
=========================================

- With 1 MB video RAM not all of the possible video modes are available
  (see chapter 1.)
- The mode '1024x768x65536, 85Hz' is only supported by the GD5436 controller
  (on GD5446 the refresh rate is automatically reduced to 75Hz).
- The install program is available in english language only.
