General Dongle Troubleshooting Tips
-----------------------------------------------------------

Try installing PhoneSweep on a different machine, a completely
different make/model machine if possible. (Also, if using a laptop,
try installing on a desktop). Whether or not this works, go to
the next section. (Especially if you want to run PhoneSweep on the
original machine).

1)Reseat the Dongle:
    -Shut machine down
-Remove dongle - Check for dust, etc.
Blow into it to remove dust and loose dirt
-Place dongle carefully onto the port so that that all
electrical connections come together at the same time.

2)Questions about the Parallel Port
--Can you use a printer through the parallel port?
--Can PhoneSweep see the dongle if a printer is attached to the dongle?
--If OS is Windows NT 4.0:
Are you in Administrative mode and the dongle
    was attached before installing PhoneSweep?

3)Check the CMOS settings for the Parallel Port
NOTE: Line 2 has a newer alternative set of settings
which has so far appeared on a Dell Optiplex GX10, running
  Windows 2000:

CMOS Settings: (Line 2 is not always present)
Line1: ECP or Standard Bi Directional
Line2: Automatic or Enabled or Disabled
Alternative Line2: ECP or PS2 or AT or EPP

Line 1 should be set to Standard Bi Directional.
Line 2, if present should be set to Enabled and not
Automatic. Automatic means that Parallel Port is only turned on
if machine detects printer on start up.
Alternative line 2: The correct setting is EPP

Sometimes, switching Standard Bi Directional to ECP can fix
problems (This is due to OS software being miscoded on internal
level).

4) Check that the drivers loaded correctly.

parclass.sys should be located as follows:

   --Windows 95 and 98: Windows\System
   --Windows NT.4 and Windows 2000: WinNT\System32\Drivers

parclass.vxd should be located as follows:

   --Windows 95 and 98: Windows\System
   --Windows NT.4 and Windows 2000: WinNT\System32

Here are the instructions for how to see if the parallel port dongle
driver is loaded on WinNT and Win2K. You can either use the Windows GUI
or the command line.

--NT4:

GUI check:

Go into Control Panel
Go into Services
Look for NetParclass in the list of services. If it's there and the status isn't "Started", click Start. (If it's not there, it was not installed.)
Look at the "Startup" column for NetParclass. If it isn't "Automatic", change it by clicking the "Startup..." button and select Automatic.

Command line check:

Go to a DOS prompt.
Type "net start netparclass". This is the same as starting it in the Services window. If it responds "The requested service has already been started", it's already running. If it was already running, you can try "net stop netparclass" to stop the service, then restart it with "net start netparclass".

--Windows 2000:

GUI check:

Like the NT check, except that Services is reached through the Control Panel then Administrative Tools.

Command line check:

Like the NT check, except you use "parclass" instead of "netparclass".

5) Manually install drivers (even if you see
   parclass.vxd already), by running keysetup.exe.

Run "keysetup.exe /u" from the command line to
uninstall any previously installed dongle drivers.
Run "keysetup.exe /d" to install the dongle drivers.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
