Multimedia Accelerator Installation Notes
=========================================
Introduction
------------
Late breaking information and useful information is located here so that
you can be up-to-date and know where to modify the installation of your
hardware. The new installation process will assume defaults for certain
parameters. The defaults have been chosen to work with most systems,
however they may conflict with other devices or may not be desired for
your system. If you are viewing this from the install program, exit
NotePad to complete the installation when you are finished reading.

1. Compatible Gameport configuration
------------------------------------
The compatibilty mode of the gameport is enabled by default for both
Windows and DOS. If you have another gameport in the system that you
want to continue using, you must disable the Multimedia Accelerators
compatible gameport function. The digital functionality of the gameport
will continue to work without interfereing with the other gameport.
To disable the compatible gameport feature in Windows, run the Device
Manager from the Control Panel and bring up the NV1 PCI Multimedia
Device and click on the Setting tab. Click on the Enable PC Compatible
Joystick until the checkmark disappears. To disable the compatible
gameport in DOS, edit DOSSTART.BAT in the WINDOWS directory and change
the line to SET NVJOY=OFF if it was set to ON.
2. DOS MPU401 Emulation I/O port
--------------------------------
The MPU401 Emulation for DOS and Windows 95 DOS Boxes defaults to
I/O port 230h if you haven't previously set it. To change the MPU401
Emulated I/O port in Windows, run the Device Manager from the Control
Panel and bring up the NVidia MPU401 Driver for General MIDI in DOS Shell
and click on the Resources tab. Set the desired address. You will most
likely want to use the same address for DOS Boxes as well as DOS. For
DOS, edit DOSSTART.BAT in the WINDOWS directory and change the
SET NVMIDI=Pxyz to the appropriate I/O. The possible I/O port addresses
are 330h, 300h, and 230h. Valid settings are:
SET NVMIDI=P330
SET NVMIDI=P300
SET NVMIDI=P230
...
3. MIDI Bank files
------------------
The MIDI bank file is a data file containing all the sampled musical
instrument sounds. There is a small one at ~1 Mb and a large one at
~6 Mb. The large one sounds a little better but at the cost of more
system memory. Because the Multimedia Accelerator keeps the bank file
resident in system memory instead of costly video memory, you can make
tradeoff of more memory->higher quality, or less memory->reduced quality.
Most people will be satisfied with the small bank file. To change the
bank file, in Windows run the Device Manager from the Control Panel and
bring up the NV1 PCI Multimedia Device and click on the Setting tab.
Click on the bank file you want loaded. You will have to restart Windows
after selecting a new bank file. Under DOS, you don't have a choice of
bank files, the ~1 Mb file is always used.
4. UniVBE support
-----------------
UniVBE 5.2 from SciTech Software now supports the Multimedia Accelerator.
This shareware driver provides VESA VBE 2.0 support. Some DOS games
require VESA VBE 2.0 support, while other games will have better quality
or higher performance with it. UniVBE is available from the SciTech
Software web page at:
htp://www.scitechsoft.com/
or you can contact SciTech Software at:
SciTech Software

Phone: 916-894-8400
Fax: 916-894-9069
email : info@scitechsoft.com or support@scitechsoft.com
ftp : ftp.scitechsoft.com
Follow the instructions that are included with UniVBE on how to configure
it for your card. UniVBE can be run from DOS, with or without the RM.EXE
TSR loaded. Also, UniVBE can be run in a Windows 95 DOS Box. On the
Multimedia Accelerator, UniVBE provides 768KB of video memory for VESA
VBE 2.0 applications. Note that UniVBE has a special alternate frame
buffer option for the Multimedia Accelerator. It allows the use of 1MB
on 2MB cards and 2MB on 4MB cards for DOS VESA VBE 2.0 Video Modes. Note
that only games that use linear frame buffer access with work with this
option. The option is invoked by specifying "-a" when running UVCONFIG.
Please see the UniVBE documentation for more information. Some games may
include an older version of UniVBE that will not work with the Multimedia
Accelerator. Consult your games documentation or contact your games
customer support line to find out how to ensure that the game does not
try to use its own version of UniVBE.
