OLYMPUS P-400 Printer Driver for Windows 95/98/NT 4.0/2000
==========================================================

Thank you for purchasing the P-400 digital photo printer. As this document
provides additional information to what is described in the Installation
Guide and Instruction Manual, please read it together with the Installation
Guide and Instruction Manual before using the printer.

Installation/Uninstallation Precautions
=======================================
1.Install the USB port driver before the printer driver as described in the
Installation Guide. If the printer driver is installed before the USB port
driver or after the printer is connected, the PC may sometimes be unable to
recognize the USB port. In this case, reboot the PC.

2.Use either of the following methods to uninstall the driver.
  1) In "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel, select "OLYMPUS P-400
Driver" and press the "Add/Remove" button.
  2) Execute "Setup.exe" from the CD-ROM.

o Deleting the printer icon in "Printers" in the Control Panel will not
 uninstall the printer driver.

3. Before re-installing the printer driver (on a PC where the driver has
already been installed), be sure to uninstall the existing driver first.

4. After uninstalling the driver, reboot the PC.

5. Install the USB port driver before installing the printer driver when
connecting the printer to a USB port.

6. If you want to change the interface from parallel to USB or vice versa,
uninstall the existing printer driver and re-install it by following the
procedures in the Installation Guide.

7. If the printer is connected to a USB port and an error occurs during
installation, check the following:
Right-click "My Computer", then select "Properties" in "Device Manager".
If <!> or<x> is displayed next to "OLYMPUS USB Port", select it and press
the "Remove" button. Try installing again.

8. If the printer driver cannot be uninstalled correctly, consult your nearest
authorized Olympus representative for assistance.

Operating Precautions
=====================
1. To print images at A4 size, at least 50 MB of unused disk space is required.

2. Depending on the specifications and settings of the PC, sometimes the
printer information cannot be displayed. In this case, printer errors can be
identified using the error lamp and LCD panel display on the printer.

3. If an error occurs with the printer after starting image transfer, an error
dialog box containing "Retry" and "Cancel" buttons may be displayed. In this
case, click the "Cancel" button to cancel printing. Printing cannot be
performed properly even if the "Retry" button is pressed. However, if USB
is used in Windows 98 or the Windows 95/98 ECP mode is used, it may be
possible to retry printing if the "Retry" button appears in the dialog box.

4. If the time-out setting in the "Printer Properties" window is set to a
short period, an error may be displayed. In this case, set a longer time-out
period.

5. When printing from a PC, set the printer's input selector to "Parallel or
USB". Do not change the input select or while printing from the PC.

6. If printing is canceled in the middle, the data transfer LED on the printer
may continue blinking, depending on the OS, specifications, or settings on the
PC. In this case, turn the printer off then on again.

7. If the printer is turned off or the cable is unplugged during printing, the
print data may sometimes remain in the print spooler. Be sure to delete any
remaining print data before printing another image.

8. White image data (R = 255, G = 255, B = 255) will not have its color
adjusted. It will always be displayed as white data.

9. If USB is used in Window 98 or in the Windows 95/98 ECP mode, it is
impossible to retry printing as long as "Please Wait" is displayed on the
printer's LCD panel. Printing will start automatically once the message
disappears.

Notes for USB Printing
----------------------
1. Install the USB port driver before the printer driver as described in the
Installation Guide. If the printer driver is installed before the USB port
driver or after the printer is connected, the PC may sometimes be unable to
recognize the USB port. In this case, reboot the PC.

2. When using Windows 2000, errors that occur in the printer will not be
displayed on the PC. In this case, printer errors can be identified using the
error lamp and LCD panel display on the printer.

3. If printing is canceled in the middle (i.e. the printing lamp on the printer
is blinking or lighting), turn the printer off then on again.

4. Turn the printer's bi-directional communication function on.
Whether the printer's bi-directional function is on or off can be checked as
described below.
   1) Click "Start", select "Settings" and click "Printer".
   2) Click "OLYMPUS P-400" once to select it, right-click it to display a
      pop-up menu, then click "Properties".
   3) Select the "Details" tab and click "Spool Settings".
   4) Make sure that the "Enable bi-directional support for this printer" box
      is checked.

Notes for Parallel Printing
---------------------------
1. When printing is canceled in the middle:
Printing will not be canceled until data transfer of a color has completed.
On certain PCs, it may take a long time before cancellation is complete.
Turning the printer off or unplugging the parallel interface cable can speed
up cancellation.

Notes for Windows 95/98 (Parallel)
----------------------------------
1. If data transfer will not start even when the printer setup, connection and
printer driver setup are all correct, turn the bi-directional function of
the printer off and retry.
To turn the printer's bi-directional function off, perform the following:
   1) Click "Start", select "Settings" and click "Printers".
   2) Click "OLYMPUS P-400" once to select it, right-click it to display a
      pop-up menu, then click "Properties".
   3) Select the "Details" tab and click "Spool Settings".
   4) Check the "Disable bi-directional support for this printer" box and
click "OK" to close the window.

2. If using Windows 95 and data cannot be transferred, transfer takes an
abnormally long time or the print results are incorrect, check the version
of "Lpt.vxd" in the "System" directory in the directory where Windows 95 is
installed.
If the version is 4.00.950, replace it with Ver. 4.00.503 or Ver. 4.00.951.
If printing is still impossible, replace "Lpt.vxd" with Ver. 4.00.953.
To obtain these versions of "Lpd.vxd", consult your PC maker.
To check the "Lpt.vxd" version, perform the following:

   1) Click "Start", select "Find" and click "Files or Folders".
   2) Enter "Lpt.vxd" in the "Named" text box, specify the drive name where
Windows 95 is installed in "Look in", check the "Include subfolders"
      box and click "Find now".
   3) Right-click "Lpt.vxd" in the list, then click "Properties".
(If the list contains more than one "Lpt.vxd", select "Lpt.vxd" in the
"System" directory in the directory where Windows 95 is installed.)
   4) Select the "Version" tab and check "File Version".

3. To change the parallel port's resource settings, perform the following:
If a resource used by the parallel port is also being used by another device,
data cannot be transferred properly to the printer. Make sure that there are
no conflicts by following the procedures below.
   1) Open "System" in the Control Panel.
   2) Select the "Device Manager" tag and open the "Properties" of "ECP
Printer Port(LPT1)" under "Ports (COM & LPT)".
   3) Select the "Resources" tab and ensure that there are no conflicts in
      the conflicting device list.

4. To run the printer in ECP mode, perform the following:
To run the printer in ECP mode, ECP mode must be set in the PC's BIOS.
To change BIOS settings, refer to your PC's instruction manual.
Some PC models do not support ECP mode.

If the printer does not operate in ECP mode, check the following settings.

Check that settings have been made for the gI/O rangeh, gInterruption
requesth and gDMA resourceh. (If necessary, change the settings.)
If you are using a computer that supports Sound Bluster, set the computer
so that the printer port is not shared with an LPT.
If you are using a computer that has an IR port, set the computer so that
the IR port is temporarily disabled.

Windows 95
----------
Even if the PC supports ECP mode, it may be unable to run in ECP mode if
the version of "LPT.VXD" is not 4.00.955.
("LPT.VXD" is located in the "System" directory in the directory where
Windows 95 is installed. Check the version in the "Properties" display.)

5. When performing multi-copy printing, note the following:
On PCs that do not support bi-directional communication, the hard disk
should have more free space than required by all print copies.
(For example, when printing10 A4-size copies of an image, about 250 MB of
unused disk space is required.)
Note that mouse and key operations may not be smooth during printing.
