4. Precautionary Information
----------------------------------------------------------------
The following restrictions and limitations apply to using this
printer driver and printing with the BJ printer.

- When printing using the page layout function, some
applications may move data from one page onto the next.

- This printer driver should be used with applications designed
to run on Windows 98 or Windows 95.

- If a USB-to-parallel printer cable is used, the error message
"Printer not responding" may be displayed in the BJ Status
Monitor while the printer is warming up. However, printing
will be performed without any problems.

- When using a USB-to-parallel printer cable, never disconnect
  the cable during printing.

5. Restrictions Related to Application Software
----------------------------------------------------------------
This printer driver is subject to the following restrictions for
the listed types of software. (For specific details, refer to
the user's manual provided with the software you use or contact
the appropriate support facility.)

- Lotus Word Pro 97 / Freelance 97(Lotus)
When [Halftoning] on the [Quality] tab of the printer driver
is set to [Fine] or [Diffusion], colour data may print in
monochrome depending on the data. In this case, change
  [Halftoning] to [Fine(Fast)] or [Auto].

- Microsoft Word 97 (Microsoft Corp.)
When [Halftoning] on the [Quality] tab of the printer driver is
set to [Auto], certain lines may not be printed. In this case,
change [Halftoning] to [Fine(Fast)], [Fine], or [Diffusion].

- Microsoft Word Version 7.0 (Microsoft Corp.)
When using Microsoft Word Version 7.0, documents designated
for enlargement/reduction printing may not be enlarged or
  reduced as specified.
To use the enlargement/reduction function, first select
Start - Settings - Printers, and right-click on the name of
the printer you use. Then select Set As Default, and specify
the paper size in the Properties - Paper dialogue box.
Now you are ready to start the application.
If you are not using the enlargement/reduction function, or if
you are printing after clicking on the Close button to close
the Print dialogue box, the printer prints using the specified
  paper size.

- CorelDRAW! 6.0 (Corel Co.)
In some cases printer driver settings may not be valid. If
this should occur, save the printing data, and close
CorelDRAW! 6.0. Then select Start - Settings - Printers,
right-click on the name of the printer you use. Then select
Properties. Now enter the printer driver settings, start
CorelDRAW! 6.0 again and print the document.

- Some software packages may cancel enlargement/reduction
settings when the printer Properties window is closed and
  reopened.
Enlargement/reduction ratios are set in terms of the ratio
between the specified document size and the printer paper size.
If this happens, you can print at the proper enlargement/
reduction ratio by printing immediately after setting the
  enlargement/reduction ratio.

settings.
For descriptions of individual settings, refer to the Help files
by clicking on the Help button in the dialogue box. When the
Help window is displayed, you can press the F1 key to see
instructions on how to use the Help files.

- Main Printer Settings dialogue box
This dialogue box contains the principal settings related to
printers and printing. From here, you can select the Advanced,
Feature or Maintenance buttons to open those dialogue boxes.
Clicking Custom in the Paper Size drop-down list box opens
the Custom Paper Size dialogue box. You can enter the desired
  paper size.

- Quality/Colour/Save dialogue boxes
These dialogue boxes allow you to check the Print Mode
settings. You can click on the Save tab to open the Save
page, and save or delete the displayed Print Mode settings.

number of copies, printing sequence and stamp settings.

- Maintenance dialogue box
This dialogue box controls settings for supplementary
operations related to the printer such as head cleaning and
  test printing.

5. Precautionary Information
----------------------------------------------------------------
The following restrictions and limitations apply to using this
printer driver and printing with the BJ printer.

- This printer driver is designed for use with Windows Version
3.1x. It cannot be used with Version 3.0x.

- About background printing:
Background printing requires much hard disk space for storing
the data temporarily. If sufficient space is not available,
the message "Insufficient disk space. Use BJ Backgrounder
setting to specify directory with sufficient space." is
displayed. You can then either change the directory setting or
increase the disk space in the Directory setting in the BJ
  Background Monitor.
The background printing function is intended to free the
computer's resources more quickly. However, when printing
graphic documents with many gradations or overlays, it may be
  faster to disable background printing.
In such cases, turn Background Printing off and print using
  the standard Windows Print Manager.
During background printing, the data processing speed varies
according to your computer's settings. For faster processing
during background printing, you can increase the size of the
BUFFERS setting in the CONFIG.SYS file, and the SMARTDRV
  setting in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
When the Background Printing function is enabled, no hard copy
is made using the WINHCOPY.EXE file. Turn Background Printing
  off to use this function.

- If you are using enlargement/reduction printing and change the
paper size in your application, the enlargement/reduction
ratio may change to match the Paper Size setting. Be sure to
check the enlargement/reduction ratio after changing the paper
  size.

- When printing using the page layout function, some
applications may move data from one page onto the next.

- When printing with manual feeding, make sure that each page is
ejected before feeding the next page.

- Since user-defined paper sizes are not defined by Windows, you
may occasionally not be able to select the proper paper size
  from within the application.

- In some Windows environments dialogue boxes may not fit onto
the screen. If you are using a display monitor lower than
640 x 480 pixels, reduce the system font to 16 dots or smaller.

- In the Printers dialogue box, make sure that the Fast Printing
Direct to Port check box is checked. Open the Printers dialogue
box by clicking Connect in the Printer control panel.

- Always use the printer driver to make settings related to
printing quality. Although some applications (such as the
Windows Accessory "Write") have print quality settings, these
  have no effect.

- Do not change any contents of the Windows file WIN.INI which
  relate to this printer driver.

6. Restrictions Related to Application Software
----------------------------------------------------------------
This printer driver is subject to the following restrictions for
the listed types of software. (For specific details, refer to
the user's manual provided with the software you use, or contact
the appropriate support facility.)

- Paintbrush (Microsoft Corp.)
When using a monochrome display driver, the printer output
becomes monochrome even though you designated colour printing.
Change to a colour display driver of no more than 256 colours
  before printing.
If you are using a display driver with more than 256 colours,
the printer may occasionally not operate. Change to a colour
display driver of no more than 256 colours before printing.
If you are using enlargement/reduction printing, turn the
Use Printer Resolution feature off before printing.

- Microsoft Windows Version 3.1 (Microsoft Corp.)
When using the XGA display driver or VGA monochrome display
driver bundled with Microsoft Windows Version 3.1, you may
occasionally be unable to print with raster fonts. If this
should occur, increase memory and change the point size or use
  a TrueType font.

- Microsoft Windows Version 3.1 (IBM)
When using the VGA monochrome display driver bundled with IBM
Windows Version 3.1, you may occasionally be unable to print
with raster fonts at large point sizes. In such cases,
increase memory and reduce the point size or use a TrueType
  font.

- Microsoft Word Version 5.0/6.0 (Microsoft Corp.)
When using Microsoft Word, the paper size settings within the
application are not identical to the settings in the printer
  driver.
The Paper Size selection is grayed out in the Printer Driver
dialogue box opened from within the application.
When using enlargement/reduction settings without further
changes, the document is printed on the paper size specified
in Word. If you are using enlargement/reduction printing, you
may occasionally not be able to print normally. If this
should occur, open the Printer Driver in the Control Panel,
and change the Paper Size setting again.

- Lotus Freelance/Windows R1.1 (Lotus Corp.)
When using Lotus Freelance/Windows, data may not be printed
  properly.

- Lotus Organizer R2 (Lotus Corp.)
When using Lotus Organizer with a colour printer, turn off the
Lotus Organizer monochrome printing setting. For monochrome
printing from a colour printer, turn the monochrome printing
  setting on.
To switch monochrome printing on or off, select File - Print -
Option from Lotus Organizer, and use the Printing
  Options dialogue box.

- Microsoft Excel Version 5.0 (Microsoft Corp.)
Microsoft Works for Windows Version 3.0 (Microsoft Corp.)
Blank lines may appear in the Paper Size listing. Do not
  select these lines for printing.

- Aldus PhotoStyler (Adobe Systems, Inc.)
When the Halftoning selection is Fine (Fast), colour printing
may not be performed properly. To avoid this, use the
application File - Print - Page Setting menu to select
Halftone Processing by Printer. If colour printing is not
satisfactory, select Halftone Processing by Printer.

- Depending on the applications you use, if the Printer Paper
Size setting is changed during enlargement/reduction printing,
the intended paper size may not be used. Open the Main dialogue
box in the Control Panel, and make necessary paper size
  settings.

- Depending on the applications you use, the Cancel Printing
function does not operate properly during background printing.
If this should occur, you can use BJ Backgrounder to cancel
  printing.

- Some applications do not print properly when resolution is set
to 600 dpi. Change the resolution to 300 dpi.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
