This printer driver allows you to print attractive documents from any Windows application using your Canon Colour Bubble Jet printer. 2. Product Contents ---------------------------------------------------------------- This product includes the following items. - BJ Printer Driver You need this software to print with the Canon BJ Printer from Windows applications. - BJ Background Monitor This allows you to check the status of background printing jobs. - BJ Backgrounder This indicates the progress of the current printing task. - Uninstall This deletes unnecessary BJ Printer Drivers. - BJ Status Monitor This indicates the status of the printer and printing job. Installing the Printer Driver ---------------------------------------------------------------- Before your printer can actually print documents, you must install this printer driver from within Windows. The following procedure describes how to install only the printer driver, without using the CD that comes with the printer. When using the CD to install the printer driver, follow the procedure described in the printer manual. Note: If you have ever used the same BJ printer, install the new driver after deleting the old version of the printer driver. For details of deleting the printer driver, refer to "2. Deleting the Printer Driver." 1-1 Using a Bidirectional Centronics Cable 1) Turn off the printer. 2) Turn on the computer. After Windows starts up, turn the printer back on. 3) From the [Start] menu, click [Run...]. 4) Click the [Browse...] button. 5) From the [Look in:] list box, select the drive or folder that contains the printer driver. 6) Choose [Setup.exe], and click the [Open] button. 7) Click the [OK] button. 8) The [Welcome] dialogue box is displayed. To continue the installation, click the [Next>] button. 9) The [Software Licence Agreement] dialogue box is displayed. If you agree to the terms of the Licence, click the [Yes] button. If you do not agree, you cannot use the printer driver. 10) File copying begins. After all files are copied, the [Install Printer] dialogue box is displayed. Check the printer and the connection destination, and click the [Next>] button. 11) The [Finish] dialogue box is displayed. Click the [Finish] button to end the installation. Notes: - If you are installing more than one printer driver, you need to choose the printer driver as default. Select the printer driver from the [Printers] folder, then check [Set as Default] in the [File] menu. - The printer driver attached to Windows (Microsoft Corporation product) may be installed depending on the system environment. However, we recommend to use Canon BJ Printer Driver. In the case of the printer driver for colour printer, it is made in Microsoft Corporation that "(MS)" sticks after a printer name. 1-2 Using a USB Cable 1) Turn off the printer. 2) Turn on the computer, and start Windows. 3) Connect the printer and the computer with the USB cable. 4) From the [Start] menu, click [Run...]. 5) Click the [Browse...] button. 6) From the [Look in:] list box, select the drive or folder that contains the printer driver. 7) Choose [Setup.exe], and click the [Open] button. 8) Click the [OK] button. 9) The [Welcome] dialogue box is displayed. To continue the installation, click the [Next>] button. 10) The [Software Licence Agreement] dialogue box is displayed. If you agree to the terms of the Licence, click the [Yes] button. If you do not agree, you cannot use the printer driver. 11) File copying begins. After all files are copied, the [Printer connection destination] dialogue box is displayed. When the dialogue box is displayed, turn on the printer. 12) The [Finish] dialogue box is displayed. Click the [Finish] button to end the installation. Notes: - If you previously used a BJ printer that was connected with a USB cable, a message reporting that the USB driver will be updated may be displayed. Click the [OK] button to update the USB driver and restart Windows. Then restart the procedure from step 1. - If you are installing more than one printer driver, you need to choose the printer driver as default. Select the printer driver from the [Printers] folder, then check [Set as Default] in the [File] menu. - If the [Finish] dialog box is not displayed after the preceding procedure, turn off the printer and turn it on again. 2. Deleting the Printer Driver ---------------------------------------------------------------- All drivers of the BJ printers that are already installed are deleted at once. 1) From the [Start] menu, select [Programs], and then click [BJ Printer]. 2) Click [Uninstall]. 3) If the [Confirm File Deletion] dialogue box appears, click the [Yes] button. 3. Accessing the Printer Properties Dialogue Box ---------------------------------------------------------------- Settings for your printer driver are normally entered from the application using the Printer Settings item within [Page Setup] in the [File] menu, or [Properties] under [File]-[Printer]. When you cannot open this window from your application, follow the procedure below. 1) From the [Start] menu, select [Settings], and then click on [Printers]. 2) Click on the icon of the printer used in your Printers folder. 3) Select [Properties] from the [File] menu. 4) In the Properties dialogue box, click [Main] or [Page Setup] to open the basic settings tab. 5) Enter the necessary settings for your printing function. To see an explanation of each item, click the [Help] button. Once the Help window is displayed, you can press the F1 key to see instructions on how to use the Help files. 6) When your settings are completed, click the [OK] button. 4. Restrictions Related to Application Software ---------------------------------------------------------------- This printer driver is subject to the following restrictions for the listed types of software. (For specific details, refer to the user's manual provided with the software you use or contact the appropriate support facility.) - Lotus Word Pro 97 / Freelance 97(Lotus) When [Halftoning] on the [Set Print Quality] dialog box of the printer driver is set to [Dither] or [Diffusion], color data may print in monochrome depending on the data. In this case, change [Halftoning] to [Dither(Fast)] or [Auto]. - Microsoft Word 97 (Microsoft Corp.) When [Halftoning] on the [Set Print Quality] dialog box of the printer driver is set to [Auto], certain lines may not be printed. In this case, change [Halftoning] to [Dither(Fast)], [Dither], or [Diffusion]. - Microsoft Word Version 7.0 (Microsoft Corp.) When using Microsoft Word Version 7.0, documents designated for enlargement/reduction printing may not be enlarged or reduced as specified. To use the enlargement/reduction function, first select [Start] - [Settings] - [Printers], and right-click on the name of the printer you use. Then select [Set as Default], and specify the paper size in the Properties - [Page Setup] tab. Now you are ready to start the application. If you are not using the enlargement/reduction function, or if you are printing after clicking on the [Close] button to close the Print dialog box, the printer prints using the specified paper size. - CorelDRAW! 6.0 (Corel Co.) In some cases printer driver settings may not be valid. If this should occur, save the printing data, and close CorelDRAW! 6.0. Then select [Start] - [Settings] - [Printers], right-click on the name of the printer you use. Then select Properties. Now enter the printer driver settings, start CorelDRAW! 6.0 again and print the document. - Some software packages may cancel enlargement/reduction settings when the printer Properties window is closed and reopened. Enlargement/reduction ratios are set in terms of the ratio between the specified document size and the printer paper size. If this happens, you can print at the proper enlargement/ reduction ratio by printing immediately after setting the enlargement/reduction ratio. - When printing using the page layout function, some applications may move data from one page onto the next. 5. Precautionary Information ---------------------------------------------------------------- The following restrictions and limitations apply to using this printer driver and printing with the BJ printer. - To enable the BJ Status Monitor, enable bi-directional communication in Windows. From the [Start] menu, click [Settings], then select [Printers] to open the Printer Properties dialogue box. Go to the [Details] tab and click the [Spool Settings...] button, then select [Enable bi-directional support for this printer]. - When printing in the hexadecimal dump mode, select [Disable bi-directional support for this printer] in the procedure above for printing without the BJ Status Monitor. - For the BJC-8500, BJC-7100, and BJC-7000 - The ink optimizer has the water-proof effect when printing on plain paper. This effect is effective when [Plain Paper], [Envelope], or [Other Paper] is selected for [Media Type]. However the [Print Quality] slide bar is set to the leftmost position, the ink optimizer is not used. - When the [Envelope] is selected for [Media Type] in the [Main] tab or [Quality] tab, remove printed paper at each one sheet. - If photo or colour ink runs out, monochrome printing is available with [Black/Colour] selected for [BJ Cartridge] and [Grayscale Print] checked. - If you are using Windows Me, printing with an IrDA connection is possible only with the BJC-55. 6. Notes on Connecting the Printer ---------------------------------------------------------------- 6-1 Connecting with 36-pin Parallel Interface - If the printer is connected with the ECP printer port, some problem may occur in printing. In this case, follow the procedure below to set the LPT mode not to use the ECP printer port. If the problems continue, set the LPT mode in the BIOS settings not to use the ECP printer port. Contact the hardware manufacturer about the BIOS settings. 1) Right-click the [My Computer] icon on the Windows desktop, and select [Properties]. 2) Click the [Device Manager] tab. 3) Select [View devices by type]. 4) Double-click [Ports (COM/LPT)]. 5) Double-click [ECP Printer Port (LPT1)]. 6) Click the [Driver] tab, and then click the [Change Driver...] button. 7) Select [Show all devices]. 8) Select [(Standard port types)] for the manufacturer, and [Printer Port] for the model. 9) Click the [Next>] button. 10) Click the [Close] button on the [Printer Port Properties] window. 11) After finishing all operations, the [System Properties] window is displayed again. Then click the [Close] button. 12) Restart the computer. 6-2 Connecting with a USB/Parallel Adapter Cable - If a USB/Parallel adapter cable is used, the error message "Printer not responding" may be displayed in the BJ Status Monitor while the printer is warming up. However, printing will be performed without any problems. - When using a USB/Parallel adapter cable, never disconnect the cable during printing. - If a USB/Parallel adapter cable is used, the error message "Printer not responding" may be displayed in the BJ Status Monitor while the printer is warming up. However, printing will be performed without any problems. 6-3 IrDA Connection - If you are using Windows Me and printing with an IrDA connection, the following conditions may occur: - If an error such as no paper occurs and you cancel printing from the computer, the print job may not be deleted. If this happens, you can cancel the print job by loading paper in the printer and pressing the RESUME button, or by turning off the printer. - If you turn off the printer during printing and then turn on the printer again, an error may be displayed on a blue screen or the screen display may become disrupted, and the system may not operate properly. Do not turn off the printer during printing. If you turn off the power by mistake, cancel the print job before turning the power back on. - If you click the [Start Status Monitor] button to start the Status Monitor, a communication error or a write error may be displayed. Normally, if you wait a while, the status display switches to "Online." After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.
Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).
If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.
Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.
Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.
Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.
From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.
Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.
Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
