----------------------------------
MARKVISION FOR WINDOWS 95 OVERVIEW
----------------------------------
MarkVision for Windows 95 has the following features:
1) A main MarkVision Printer window that shows much information.
It is also very configurable offering several view modes, and columns
that you can sort and eliminate (in the details view).
2) Multiple printer windows so that you don't have to keep all your network
printers all in one printer window. You can open multiple printer windows
and have some printers in one window and other printers in another. You
can create as many printer windows as you need. You can manually setup
these printer windows, or apply filters to a window and let MarkVision
select which printers go in which printer window based on the filter you
define. Be sure to check out this MarkVision feature! We think you
will find it very useful.
3) A graphical status view of multiple printers.
You can open as many views as it is reasonable to see on your
particular screen. You can then minimize them all and create an icon on the
Task bar for each printer. You can configure the icon to change or
automatically open when an error occurs.
4) The ability to handle more than one network protocol. If you are running
more than one network protocol on your Windows 95 workstation, use
MarkVision to manage your parallel attached peer-to-peer printers too. This
allows you to view and control a printer that is connected to a peer
workstation from your workstation using MarkVision!
5) The "Events" history pull down in the Status View allows you to see the
history of all the error conditions that the printer has encountered.
6) The "Features" view inside the Status View. You can see all
this information and more from a single location.
7) The familiar Remote Control Panel, and Job Statistics views too!
8) If you are a network administrator, integration of the network printer
utility functions are all here. Each individual Printer or adapter
icon in the main view has its own individual Network Settings and Adapter
Settings Views that are integrated with the other popular views. You can
control how the network is searched for printers by using the Configure
pull down in the main MarkVision printer window.
--------------------
INSTALLATION METHODS
--------------------
There are several ways to install either printer drivers, MarkVision or both.
Online help is available from the SETUP utility. Be sure to use this to
further explain the SETUP utility's options. There are three main methods
of starting the installation process:
Method 1) Place MarkVision Disk 1 in drive A:, and select START then RUN
then A:\SETUP
- Select Typical or Custom or Server installation.
- Select Typical for a local workstation only installation, or
Peer-to-Peer installation.
- Select Custom if your printer is connected directly to the network
by means of the Network Adapter.
- Select Server if you are the network administrator and want to
install copies of MarkVision and the printer drivers on a shared
network drive for subsequent workstation installations. After Server
installation is complete, workstations on the network can run
F:\MARKVIS\SETUP, for example, to configure the workstation using
one of these methods:
- Install a local workstation copy of the drivers and
MarkVision
- Configure the workstation to run MarkVision from the shared drive
location.
- After the installation of MarkVision, you will see "Add Printer"
window comes from Windows 95. You can select one of the printer
drivers to install or you can skip to.
- Please note that the PCL drivers that run with MarkVision are
marked with (MV). The other PCL drivers are prepared for
users who do not wish to use MarkVision. If you use these
drivers, you cannot take advantage of the features of MarkVision.
However, you will get slightly faster printing speed.
Method 2) a) Open the Printers Folder
b) Select the "Add Printer" icon. This will launch the Printer
Wizard.
c) When prompted to select a manufacturer and product, select "Have
Disk" and insert Printers Drivers Disk 1 from this package.
You can then select one of the printer drivers to install.
You can install separately MarkVision only with method 1 later.
Please note that the PCL drivers that run with MarkVision are
marked with (MV). The other PCL drivers are prepared for
users who do not wish to use MarkVision. If you use these
drivers, you cannot take advantage of the features of MarkVision.
However, you will get slightly faster printing speed.
Method 3) If the printer is locally attached to your workstation, you can let
Windows 95's Plug and Play mechanisms work for you to start up the
Printer Wizard automatically. Follow step c in method 2 above, to
install printer drivers.

-------------------------------------
COMPATIBILITY AND SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-------------------------------------
The SETUP Utility is designed and tested to operate on IBM (or 100%-
compatible) personal computers or personal systems with a hard drive.
All the utilities were designed and tested for the Microsoft Windows 95 System
Version 4.00.950 or greater.
System Requirements:
- To run SETUP, you need at least 1.5 MB of free hard disk space.
This disk space will be freed when SETUP is complete.
- To install MarkVision for Windows 95, requires approximately 4 MB of
PC hard disk space.
- To install the PCL 5 driver, you need approximately 1 megabyte of PC
hard disk space.
- To install the PostScript driver, you need approximately 1 megabyte
of PC hard disk space.
In order to manage a locally parallel attached printer to a workstation
(including Peer-to-Peer local parallel attached printers) using MarkVision,
the workstation must have an IEEE 1284 compliant parallel port controller and
parallel cable.
---------------------------
NETWORK SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
---------------------------
You can use MarkVision to control remote printers in two ways:
1) Peer-to-peer shared printers by parallel attached printers to workstations
2) Printers directly attached to the network by the Network Adapter
- With a NetWare 3.x, or 4.x server (client server environment)
- Without any servers (point to point environment)
===> Workstation Requirements:
- For parallel-attached Peer-to-Peer shared printers:
- Microsoft's File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
- Microsoft's Client for Microsoft Networks
(NetBEUI or TCP/IP protocol must be bound to both services)
- For The Network Adapter connected printers:
- Novell's NetWare Client32 (for NetWare 3.x and 4.x) <Recommended>
- Microsoft's Client for NetWare Networks <Not recommended>
- Microsoft's IPX/SPX-compatible Client
- Microsoft's TCP/IP Client
(AppleTalk (EtherTalk) Protocol is currently not supported even
though it is possible to check the enable AppleTalk check box
in the Advanced Settings menu of the Adapter Settings tab)
===> The Network Adapter Firmware Revision Levels
The minimum firmware revision levels for the Network Adapter is:
- Ethernet-C Network Adapter ... 4.126.1 or greater
NOTE: Be sure to read the Windows 95 section of the "Network Printer
Utility Guide" that comes with the Network Adapter. You will find
an abundance of useful information on using, configuring, and
installing your adapter with MarkVision.
-----------------------------
USER TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
-----------------------------
- TYPICAL VS. CUSTOM VS. SERVER SETUP
The Typical Installation method in SETUP should be selected for printers
that will be connected directly to a PC through a parallel (LPT) port. This
includes accessing a remote printer that is shared (Peer-to-Peer), yet is
connected to a workstation through a parallel port. In addition, any
printer drivers that are installed are installed directly onto the
workstation running SETUP.
The Custom Installation method in SETUP should be selected for printers that
are available by The Network Adapter. Custom Installation allows the
user or administrator to select the network protocol that needs to be
installed to enable MarkVision function. You can also install printer
drivers and local LPT attached printer support.
The Server Installation method allows the network administrator to place all
the MarkVision and Driver files onto a shared network drive location for use
in two ways:
1) Allow users to run MarkVision from this remote location, thus minimizing
the amount of workstation hard drive space required to run MarkVision
from a workstation.
- OR -
2) Allow users to install MarkVision and printer drivers to their
local workstation without using disks. This method makes local
installation of drivers and/or MarkVision as easy as an "e-mail" note
informing users where to access the SETUP utility. The users can run
SETUP from their workstation without the need for the actual disks.
Please note that MarkVision allows only 8 characters or less for
server names, subdirectories, or subfolder names.
- CANNOT ACCESS THE PORT (PORT CONFLICT)
If you see an error like "There was an error writing to LPT1: for the
printer (Printer Name): Cannot access the port. It may by in use by
another program. Quit other programs and try printing again" when you
use MarkVision for a parallel connected printer, you can resolve the
problem by restarting Windows95 after you confirm the printer is turned
on and ready.
It is recommended that the parallel connected printer be turned on and
ready to print before starting MarkVision and Windows95.
- MISSING PRINTERS IN MARKVISION
A "missing" printer (as listed in the "status" column of the details
display) is a printer that was listed in a previous MarkVision session, but
is not found on this session. The first time you start up MarkVision, you
will NOT find any "missing" printers. A "missing" printer had to be listed
at least once on a previous session of MarkVision.
A printer can be "missing" for several reasons:
1) The most common reason is that the printer has been turned off. Once the
printer is turned back on, and MarkVision is either restarted or a
refresh operation is performed, the printer status changes from missing
to a known state: like "Ready."
2) Another reason is that a printer has been replaced with a printer of
another manufacturer or type since MarkVision was last invoked.
Through the Configuration menu, you can elect not to show these missing
printers. Another way to delete missing printers is to select Delete from
the (usually Right Mouse Button) pop-up menu.
Note: When you individually delete missing printers from a MarkVision
printer window, you exit MarkVision to save this information.
Otherwise missing printers unexpectedly return when the MarkVision
screen is refreshed.
- DOWNLOADING FONTS/MACROS/DEMOS DOES NOT SUPPORT UNC NAMES
When selecting paths and/or file names for fonts, macros, overlays, or
demos to download to printer FLASH, it is still necessary to use
conventional 8.3 directory and filename format. This function is shared
between the printer drivers and MarkVision; so this restriction
applies regardless of where you access the download utility.
Note that the download functions are supported only by the PostScript driver.
- INSTALLING PRINTER DRIVERS AFTER A SERVER INSTALLATION
When you perform a Server Installation, you not only copy all the MarkVision
files onto the server directory location that you specified, but you also
copy both the PCL and PostScript Printer drivers to this same
location. For example, if you chose the server directory to be "X:\DRIVERS"
both MarkVision and the printer drivers would be installed to this
sub-directory or sub-folder.
When you are ready to install the printer drivers to your local PC, you need
to remember this network location of "X:\DRIVERS". The Printer Wizard will
request this item.
The Installation Program uses the Printer Wizard to install the
printer drivers. Also, you can start the Printer Wizard manually by
selecting the "Add Printer" icon inside the Windows 95 Printers Folder. Be
sure to select the "Have Disk..." button when you are shown the list of
printer manufacturers and their printers from within the Printer Wizard.
The next dialog "Install From Disk", requires the "X:\DRIVERS" path. This
path contains the FJSETUP.INF and LEXPS.INF files that the Printer Wizard
needs to complete the task of printer driver installation to your
workstation.
---------------------
PROBLEM DETERMINATION
---------------------
- MARKVISION DOES NOT WORK FOR A SERIALLY CONNECTED PRINTER
MarkVision cannot establish bi-directional communications to a printer
connected to a serial port of your PC workstation. You need either to
attach your printer to the LPT port of your PC, or connect directly to
a LAN by means of The Network Adapter.
- CANNOT PRINT TO THE LOCAL PRINTER WITH MARKVISION
There are several possibilities why when MarkVision is running, you will
not be able to print to a local, parallel port connected printer without
getting Windows Port Device Conflict messages:
1) The Windows 95 Spooler Settings MUST be set to "Enable bi-directional
support for this LPT port." Click on the "Details" tab found in the
Property Sheet of the printer driver. Click "Spool Settings..." to check
the status of the "Enable bi-directional support for this printer" check
box. Be sure this setting is selected, or you will not be able to print
from a Windows application when MarkVision running.
2) Also check the "Spool MS-DOS Print Jobs." This setting can be found by
selecting the "Port Settings..." button in the "Details" tab of the
printer driver's Property sheet. Be sure this setting is enabled in order
to allow printing from a DOS Prompt or DOS Application with MarkVision
running at the same time.
3) Port Conflicts can be caused if a printer driver that was shipped with
your printer has never been installed for this port AND you print
through a driver. For example, you installed MarkVision to manage your
local printer, but you use an HP printer driver to print to this
printer. Even if you intend to print through the HP printer
driver, you need to install at least one printer driver that shipped
with your printer and configure it for this same LPT port.
- LOCAL PRINTER APPEARS AS NON-BIDIRECTIONAL IN MARKVISION MAIN PRINTER WINDOW
Some common reasons for this problem:
1) Your PC's Parallel Port needs to be configured as NORMAL, STANDARD, or
placed in COMPATIBILITY mode in your PC's BIOS Setup. EXTENDED, ECP, or
other settings such as this, generally do not work with the Windows 95
supplied LPT.VXD driver.
2) However on some computers, the parallel port mode set to "Standard"
will not allow MarkVision to establish bi-directional communications.
Then, if these computers have an ECP parallel port mode, change it
to ECP mode and retry MarkVision.
3) Your Parallel Printer Cable is not an IEEE 1284 compliant cable.
4) Your printer is attached to your PC through a switch box that allows for
sharing of your printer with other PCs. Frequently these switch boxes do
not "switch" all of the Centronics Parallel signals; therefore the
inherent bi-directional capabilities of the cable are lost.
- MARKVISION NOT FINDING ALL NETWORK PRINTERS THROUGH THE IPX CLIENT
If your computer has more than one network card active at the same time with
IPX being the only client, it is a known Windows 95 limitation that will
only allow MarkVision to find printers through only one of these network
cards.
- LEXSTART APPLICATION ERROR
If you see an application error when you open MarkVision under an
environment without Microsoft's client for NetWare Networks, please
delete or rename LEXNW32.DLL file in Markvis\win95 folder.
This file escaped deletion when Microsoft's Client for NetWare Networks
was deleted. The file NETWARE.DRV may also remain in Windows\system
folder. It is recommended that this file also be deleted.
- SERVER INSTALLATION OF PRINTER DRIVERS FROM A LAN SERVER PC NOT WORKING
When the Printer Wizard is launched from SETUP, there is a known problem
in the Microsoft Printer Wizard that it cannot find the .INF or associated
printer driver files on a LAN SERVER remote drive. This is unique to
OS/2 LAN SERVER and is not a problem with any other network protocol.
- DOWNLOADED FONT, DEMO, OR MACRO GOES TO UNEXPECTED PRINTER
It is possible to associate more than one printer with a network queue,
so more than one printer appearing in MarkVision may be using the
same queue. When you select "Download" from the printer's popup menu
the font, demo, or macro is sent as a print job to the queue. The
first printer using the queue that finds this job will accept it.
This may not be the printer selected in MarkVision.
Note that the download functions are supported only by the PostScript driver.
- COMMUNICATION ERROR AT ADVANCED SETTING
If you see a communication error when you press the Advanced Setting
button in the Adapter Settings tab, please check the Gateway and BOOTP
Server addresses are correctly set. If one of them is out of the
permitted address range specified by the Netmask, MarkVision will
issue this error. Note that all zero value addresses are not permitted.
You can set correct addresses by using Remote Control Panel or printer's
control panel. In order to use the Remote Control Panel, it will be
necessary to refresh the printer from MarkVision.
- COMMUNICATION ERROR WHEN UPDATING NETWORK ADDRESSES
When you set TCP/IP address, netmask, and/or gateway address with
MarkVision, a Communication Error might be displayed.
This happens when it takes too much time to update the information
on the Network Adapter and a NetWare time-out occurs.
The TCP/IP address etc. may have been correctly updated on the
Network Adapter even though a Communication Error occurred. To confirm
whether the update was successful, do the following:
1) From MarkVision's main menu, click on Printer pull-down menu and
choose Refresh All Printers.
2) Follow the same procedure as when updating the TCP/IP address.
3) When the Adapter Advanced Settings menu is displayed, check to see
if the TCP/IP, netmask, and/or gateway addresses have been updated.
- CANNOT FLASH NETWORK CARD
If you see a "Flash File Write Error" when you are trying to "Flash
Network Card" at the Adapter Setting tab, please check if the "Port
Enabled" check box at the NetWare Setting tab is checked. If so,
uncheck it and try again.
