Q1.15 Release of ForteMedia PCI Audio Device FM801 with Q3D Support
===================================================================
Date: 10/14/98

This is a Win9x version of ForteMedia FM801 PCI Audio Driver with 
Software Positional 3D Support from QSound. If you find any problem(s), 
Please report it to your Sound Card Manufacturer. We, ForteMedia, 
as a Audio Component Company, will try our best to support you through 
our Sound Card Manufacturers. You will also find an end-user license 
agreement from QSound for the Q3D 3D Positioning Softwrae. 
Please read it before using it.

[1] Installation Procedure for FM801 Q1.15
    ======================================

[1.1] Install From Floppy
      -------------------
For Typical Driver Directory in Floppy: A:\,
1) Turn off Machine
2) Insert FM801 Card
3) Turn on Machine and reboot system
4) Win95 will report "PCI MultiMedia Audio Device" found and ask for Driver.
5) browse the driver from A:\ 
   (usually Win95 OSR2 will locates it and you just click "Finish")
6) Win95 will start to install driver. just follow the steps with Win95.
Notes: 
#potential traps with Win95 OSR2 Driver Installation from Floppy
1) Win95 will pop up a box with big red cross "X" and ask for "Driver Disk".
   Don't be confused. Just click "OK".
2) Then Win95 looks into wrong directory to copy files. Instead of floppy,
   Win95 looks into the default WIN95 CD directory. Stay cool and just change
   the directory from CD to floppy. Then everything will be all right.


[1.2] Install From CD ROM
      --------------------
For Typical Driver Directory in Driver CD ROM: D:\Win95,
1) Turn off Machine
2) Insert FM801 Card
3) Turn on Machine and reboot system
4) Win95 will report "PCI MultiMedia Audio Device" found and ask for Driver
5) browse the driver directory from CD: it should be D:\WIN95.
6) Win95 will start to install driver. just follow the steps with Win95.
Notes: 
CD installation is simpler and easier than floppy.
No more question is asked after you select Driver Location from CD.


[1.3] Uninstall the FM801 Driver
      --------------------------
1) Click the ForteMedia Icon in Control Panel
2) The Uninstall Dialog Box will show up 
3) Click "Uninstall" button to uninstall
*** known issue:
   In some rare situation with certain machines:
   "ForteMedia" Icon in Control Panel, may cause    
   to "refresh" device detection. Just select "Cancel" if the situation 
   happens on your machine. We are looking into this problem now.


[1.4] Update with new Driver
      -----------------------
1) run "Uninstaller" through "ForteMedia" Icon in Control Panel
2) restart the system
3) Install the new driver with Floppy or CD as mentioned above

[1.5] Install or Update Driver by using "SETUP"
      -----------------------------------------
1) The Users of FM801 Sound Card can also update driver or Install Driver without 
   Sound Card by using the SETUP utility.
2) Just run "SETUP" from floppy or from CD:\directory and follw the SETUP procedures to 
   finish the installation.
3) THe users need to reboot to make sure the new driver installation to take effect.
4) SETUP utility can also be used to update driver or clean up previous unsuccessful
   installation.

    ============================
1. Push Button Volume Control
2. Add options in FM801.INF & FM801.IN_ for Mixer Volume Control.
   You may want to turn on/off certain controls.

[4] Check list if Sound Card not found or IRQ not assigned to FM801
    ================================================================
1) Change Slot: Insert our PCI Audio Card into another PCI Slot. Reboot.
2) if problem persists, please Adjust BIOS Settings.
3) Adjust BIOS Settings:
   a. getting into BIOS (usually, hit "F1", "Del" or "F10" after Reboot)
   b. get into the Section with title "PCI/PnP"
   c. make sure it reserves enough IRQ for PCI devices
   d. if there is "Reset Configuration" option, change it to "Yes/Enable".
   e. if there is "PnP OS" option, change it to "NO".
   f. reboot.
4) if problem is still there, report the problem to us.


[5] Check list if SB Game is not working
    ====================================
1) DOS Games runs the best with PCI IRQ 5/7/9 assigned to FM801.
   This can be verified through "Control Panel"/"System"/"Device Manager"/
   "Sound, Video and Games"/"FM801 PCI Audio".
2) Even if PCI IRQ is not assigned to 5/7/9, We use IRQ routing technique 
   to make sure DOS Games still work.
3) But for the best result of DOS game play and to reduce potential problem(s)
   of the additional layer of routing. Please change BIOS Setting to reserve
   PCI IRQ 5/7/9 for PCI Devices.
4) Some of old DOS games may not even work in a Windows DOS Box. If this is 
   the case, please shut down the system to MS-DOS mode and play the game in 
   the Real DOS mode.
5) if problem is still there, report the problem to us.


[6] Adjust SB IRQ/IO/DMA for some DOS Games
    =======================================
1) Some DOS game may need certain fixed resource (IO, IRQ and DMA)
2) This adjustment can be achieved through "Control Panel"/"System"/
   "Device Manager"/"Sound, Video and Games"/"Legacy Audio Device".
3) Click "Resource" Tab to change the Legacy Audio Device I/O, IRQ and DMA.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
