This document describes the steps required to properly install the Windows 9x (95 and 98 second edition) HSF Generic Modem driver, which accompany this document. Please understand that the modem drivers you will be installing are intended for basic modem operations and are generally not supported.

I.  Extracting the generic modem driver.

  1.  Download the Win9x HSF Generic Driver from the website (www.conexant.com). 
  2.  To extract the driver double clicking on the HSF_Win9x.exe file and pointed the your C:\Win9x HSF Generic Drivers drive.

**Note:  It is recommended that you take note of the exact location of the extracted files, as you will be required to use this information during the installation process.

II.  Instructions for Windows 95

  i.  Upgrade your HSF generic modem driver in Win95.
   
    1.  Right click on My Computer.  Go to Properties->Device Manager->Modem->SubModem folder usually the name of the modem.
    2.  Highlight this folder and then click on the Properties button.  Go to the Driver folder and click on the Upgrade Driver button.
    2.  A "Update Device Driver Wizard" window will pop-up which indicates that you are ready to upgrade the modem driver.
    3.  Check on "Yes (Recommended) and now click on next to proceed. 
    4.  Another window will pop-up, click on the "Other Locations" button and point windows to the folder where the modem driver is located (C:\Win9x HSF Generic Drivers).
    5.  Let it take about 10 seconds to install the driver and then when ready click on "Finish" to complete installation.

III.   Instructions for Windows 98 Second edition.

  i.   Uninstall and install the generic modem drivers with HXFSetup.exe.    

    1.  Go to the folder where the modem driver is located, C:\Win9x HSF Generic Drivers, and double click on the HXFSetup.exe file.
    2.  By clicking on the HXFSetup.exe, you will be uninstalling and installing the HSF generic driver without your intervention.
    3.  If during the installation process, the "Add New Hardware Wizard" pops up which indicates that you need to direct it to the drivers.
    4.  Click on Next, then select "Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended)" and click Next.
    5.  To direct windows to the drivers select "Specify a location" and go the folder where the drivers are located, C:\Win9x HSF Generic Drivers.
    6.  Allow a few seconds for the installation process and then click on Finish when ready.

IV.  Testing your modem

  1. Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and open the modem control panel (Phone and Modem options in ME & 2K. 
     -WIN98  Highlight the modem in the list, then click on the More Info button. Windows will communicate with the modem and return the results. If this test is successful then your modem is working and is ready to be used.
        -WINME/2K  Click on the modems tab, then click on the Properties button. Next select the diagnostics tab and click on the Query Modem button. Windows will communicate with the modem and return the results. If this test is successful then your modem is working and is ready to be used.

How To Update Drivers Manually

After your driver has been downloaded, follow these simple steps to install it.

  • Expand the archive file (if the download file is in zip or rar format).

  • If the expanded file has an .exe extension, double click it and follow the installation instructions.

  • Otherwise, open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting Device Manager.

  • Find the device and model you want to update in the device list.

  • Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  • From the Properties dialog box, select the Driver tab.

  • Click the Update Driver button, then follow the instructions.

Very important: You must reboot your system to ensure that any driver updates have taken effect.
