                    3Com NIC Driver Update Kit for the
       3C90x Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL PCI Bus Master NIC Family
                             Version 5.0

This document describes the procedures for using the 3Com NIC Driver
Update Kit to upgrade your driver and diagnostic program to the version
of the software that was included on the EtherDisk (R) Diskette version
5.0 for the 3C90x Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL PCI Bus Master NIC
Family. The 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit makes it possible to update
your network software without having to use the control panel. It can
also be used to update many systems on a network automatically by
using NetWare login scripts or software version management system.

Requirements
============
1) The update program will run on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 3.51
   and Windows NT 4.0.

2) At least one 3C90x Fast EtherLink XL/EtherLink XL PCI Bus Master NIC
   installed in the system.

5) In the Browse window, click OK.

Using the Driver Update Kit in a multi-NIC environment
======================================================
Updating a 3C90XB or 3C905C NIC to EtherDisk 5.0 in a system that also
contains a 3C900 or 3C905 NIC will cause the 3C900 or 3C905 NIC to stop
functioning. If you wish to keep multiple NICs on your system and mix
3C900 or 3C905 NICs with newer NICs, you must first remove the driver
for the 3C900 or 3C905 NIC, via the Network Control Panel, and then
re-install these NICs with a software update which is available on the
3Com support world wide web site. After re-installing the 3C900 or
3C905 NIC with the software update, you can proceed with the updating
your system to EtherDisk 5.0 by running the 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit.

To download the software update, you must use the link
http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/index.htm on the 3Com support
world wide web site. Use the pull down menu to choose the product number
for your NIC (3C900 or 3C905). Look for the heading "3C900/3C905
Multi-NIC Update for use with EtherDisk/EtherCD 5.X" and follow the
instructions on the web page to download the software update.

Updating the Driver without installing the Diagnostic Program
=============================================================
The 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit can be called with the command
line parameter /nodiag. Using this parameter will update the
driver without installing the Diagnostic Program.

		Update.exe /nodiag

The 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit in Unattended Mode
=================================================
The 3Com NIC Driver Update Kit has two command line parameters that allow
it to be used for unattended upgrades or to be used in software management
applications to push the upgrade to the end-stations. The first option,
/unattended, suppresses all dialog boxes so no user interaction is needed
to perform the upgrade.
The second, /preload, should only be used if the Driver Update Kit is
called during the installation of the Operating System, or OS, and delays
the installation of the 3Com Diagnostic Communication Protocol until the
OS has finished its installation. Since running the Driver Update Kit
during the OS install requires special software from Microsoft, like the
OPK, if you are unsure on whether to call the /preload parrameter we suggest
you attempt the OS install without this parrameter first and only if this
does not work should you use the /preload parameter.

		Update.exe /unattended [/preload] [/nodiag]
