HP OfficeJet Series 300 README.TXT File
02/01/96

Thank you for purchasing an HP OfficeJet Series 300. Most of
your questions can be answered by looking in the HP OfficeJet
Series 300 User's Guide or in the on-line help from either the
HP OfficeJet Manager or Eclipse FAX SE (OfficeJet models 330
and 350). This file contains information that was too late to
be included in the manual, or that is considered too technical
for the manual. Another source of information are the documents
you can receive via fax from HP First Fax in the US at
(800) 333-1917.

Compaq Presario Tabworks
When installed on a Compaq PC with Tabworks, extra tabs
may be created inappropriately.

B. Eclipse FAX SE Hints and Tips (OfficeJet models 330 and 350)
===============================================================
Using Telephone Calling Cards
When generating cover sheets, Eclipse FAX SE includes the fax
recipient's fax number on the cover sheet. If Eclipse Fax SE
finds four or more pauses after the 8th digit of the fax number,
it will not include anything following the pauses on the cover
page. This is an attempt to prevent calling card numbers from
being included on the cover page. Be sure to use commas (,) to
represent pauses. If you are using a calling card and have
specified your calling card number as part of the fax number
to be dialed, you should preview your fax before sending it to be
sure the calling card number is not on the cover page.

Custom Video Drivers
Some third party video drivers will cause Eclipse FAX SE to
display its dialog boxes incorrectly. This problem may also
appear using an EGA or CGA display. However, the problem is
cosmetic and the program is still completely functional.

Video 7 Mirage (Video Adapter)
When viewing 32K colors, the background color of the Print Status
box will be black. When viewing 64K colors, the background
color will be white. In both modes, the message(s) in the Print
Status box are still clear to view.

Orchid Farenheit VA (Video Adapter)
If viewing 32K or 64K colors, you might experience a General
Protection Fault (GPF) in Windows (i.e. Windows stops running).
We suggest that you change your video driver to display less
colors to avoid this problem.

ELSA 3.30 and ELSA 3.17 (Video Drivers)
If you send faxes in landscape mode, you might experience a
General Protection Fault (GPF) in Windows (i.e., Windows stops
running).

Other Video Notes
If you are faxing graphics such as lines or boxes within some
programs such as Microsoft Word or Lotus' Ami Pro, and your page
is in landscape mode, the sent faxes may be missing some of the
graphics or the graphic may be slightly altered (e.g., solid line
box is now a dotted line box).

PCX Files
If you use Paintbrush to create or edit images for use in Eclipse
FAX SE, turn off colors in the Image Attributes dialog. Images
will appear distorted if you leave color turned on. Faxes that
have been edited and saved with Paintbrush will appear distorted
when loaded back into Eclipse FAX. This is because Paintbrush
changes the field that holds the resolution of a PCX file from
200 dpi (fine-mode fax) to 640 by 480 (default VGA resolution)
pixels. You can avoid this distortion by faxing the image to a
file from within Paintbrush. Be sure to turn off the margins in
the Page Setup dialog and click 'Use Printer Resolution' in the
Print dialog.

Station ID's
Almost all standard fax machines have a Station ID capability;
this is not necessarily true of computer fax modems. If your
OfficeJet connects to a fax machine or a computer fax modem
that does not have this capability, the Station ID will not
be displayed on your Status Dialog.

Autoprompt Faxes
When you send a paper fax using the AutoPrompt with a PC cover
sheet, the send log will contain an entry for that fax. The
"pages" column displays the number of pages you entered in the
send fax dialog box. The actual fax cannot be viewed, since the
fax was paper, not a file on your PC. You can view the PC cover
sheet by double clicking on the log entry or selecting view.

If you remove the paper from the document feeder when the
AutoPrompt Send Fax dialog is present, the dialog continues
to display. You should select Cancel to exit the Send
Fax dialog.

Do not use AutoPrompt faxing in Windows 3.1 with very low
disk space or your PC may lock up. After re-booting your
system, the phone.dat file may be lost (phonebook file).
With low memory you may see an incorrect error message
displayed from Elipse Fax SE. The message: "Eclipse
FAX SE Can not run Eclipse Manager Reinstall Eclipse" is
incorrect and should be ignored.

Unusual Behavior with Windows 95 Applications
There are some Windows 95 applications that always remain
in the foreground when active, limiting your ability to see
some Efax or Device Manager dialogs. Word 7.0 is an example
of a Windows 95 application with this behavior. If you have
Word active on your screen and place a document in the
OfficeJet to fax, the AutoPrompt dialog will be displayed.
Selecting Send will bring up the Send Fax dialog. Because
this dialog is placed in the center of your screen it is
overlaying the Word document. You will see the dialog
displayed for just an instant then disappear. The dialog
is hidden under Word. You can access the Send Fax dialog
by selecting it from Alt Tab or selecting Efax from the
task bar.

Microsoft Publisher 300x300 dpi Scanning
Scanning at 300x300 dpi in Microsoft Publisher does not
work. The 300x300 scanned image display is corrupted
appearing as garbage on your screen. The 200x200 dpi scan
appears correctly. Choose only 200x200 dpi scanning
resolution when in MS Publisher.

Phonebooks
If you enter a name in the phonebook that has 3 words,
you will not be able to delete that name in the future.
For example, the name Mr. George Jones cannot be deleted
or edited.

C. Printing Application Notes
=============================

Printing in a DOS Window
Note that you cannot print in a DOS window if the OfficeJet
Manager software is running. You may get an error message such as,
"Printer out of Paper...". It is recommended that you close the
OfficeJet Manager software before printing in your DOS window.

Specific Application Notes
At the time the HP OfficeJet Series 300 printer driver was
released, the following software application limitations existed:

CC:MAIL FOR WINDOWS Version 2.2: Printing does work with EMF
spooling in Windows 95. To print you must disable EMF spooling.
From the control panel, printers folder, select the OfficeJet
properties. Select the details tab and change the spool format
from EMF to RAW. This setting will disable OfficeJet spooling
for all Windows applications.

HP EXPLORER: If you have the HP Explorer software for the HP
LaserJet 4L running in background and you attempt to print with
an HP OfficeJet Series 300 printer driver, you may get an error
message "Not Enough Memory To Print". To print with the HP
OfficeJet Series 300 printer driver, either turn off the HP
Explorer Software or add the "/x" switch to the STAT4L.EXE
command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The command should then read

       STAT4L.EXE /x

Using the /x switch may increase the time it takes for HP
Explorer to "Pop Up."

LOTUS 1-2-3 1.0/1.1: Shading does not print correctly with color
backgrounds. This is not a problem with documents created with
Lotus 1-2-3 version 4.0.

LOTUS IMPROV 2.0: Images with scaling factors greater than 100%
will be clipped.

MICROSOFT EXCEL 4.0: Some paths to the driver dialogs do not
work correctly and settings are not retained. Use the following
path to reach a printer setup that works:

For version 4.0 - File, Page Setup, Printer Setup, Setup.

MICROSOFT POWERPOINT 3.0: A General Protection Fault occurs
when printing if spooling with SuperQueue 3.02. Turn SuperQueue
off to print from Powerpoint 3.0.

MICROSOFT PUBLISHER 1.0: You cannot change print settings from
Microsoft Publisher 1.0. You must change print settings through
the Control Panel.

MICROSOFT WORD (Versions 6.0 and earlier): Default footer
settings are outside the printable region. To move the footer
within the printable region, change the default footer settings
so that the footer is at least 0.67 in. or more from the paper
edge.

MICROSOFT WORD 6.0: The default envelope configuration does not
work correctly. Select the correct orientation as follows:

1. Select "Envelopes and Labels" in the Tools menu.
2. Select "Feed".
3. Select "Face Down", make sure "Clockwise Rotation" is NOT
checked, and select the third icon from the right.

MICROSOFT WRITE 3.1: When printing envelopes, the left and right
margins are switched with each other. If clipping occurs when
printing envelopes, switch the left and right margin settings.

PRINTSHOP DELUXE 1.0: Information within 0.67 in. of the bottom
of the page is clipped. The program does not provide a means of
adjusting the bottom margin of the document to fit within the
limits of the printer driver's margin settings. This problem is
fixed in version 2.0.

SPC HARVARD GRAPHICS 2.0: If you are using Harvard Graphics with
SuperQueue version 3.01/3.02 and you get the error message
"SuperQueue cannot continue-disk may be full" when printing TIF
graphics, turn off SuperQueue and reprint the document.

SPC HARVARD GRAPHICS 2.0: When the HP OfficeJet Series 300 Setup
dialog box is called from inside Harvard Graphics, Orientation and
paper size setting changes are ignored by Harvard Graphics.

SPC HARVARD GRAPHICS 1.021: Pie slices print as rectangles.

ZENOGRAPHICS SUPERQUEUE 3.01, 3.02: When printing PageMaker 4.0
documents in PageMaker 5.0, If the message "Fail to print" is
displayed, turn off SuperQueue and reprint the document.

D. Modifying the OFFICJET.INI file to Change Printing Behavior
=========================================================
CAUTION: Do not change any settings in your OFFICJET.INI file
unless specifically instructed to in this README.TXT to resolve
an application or printing problem. Changes to OFFICJET.INI may
adversely affect your printing system.

For some application problems, the solution may involve modifying
your OFFICJET.INI file. The HPSCNFIG.EXE file provides an easy
method for modifying control values in this file. To do this,
follow these steps:

1. Run the HPSCNFIG.EXE file from the Program Manager or File
Manager. A dialog box will be displayed with a list of check
   boxes.

2. Check the check box specified in the software application note
   for your application problem.

3. Click the OK Button.

The HPSCNFIG configuration program will modify the appropriate
control values in your OFFICJET.INI file.

NOTE: You must restart Windows for the changes you have made to
take effect. Make sure that you close all open documents
      before restarting Windows.

*****************************************************************

E. Installing OfficeJet Software in Windows 95
==============================================
If you install the OfficeJet software and then later uninstall and
reinstall the software again using "Add Printer" from the printer
folder, you will see the message "You already have a driver for
this printer installed, do you want to keep it?" Select the
"Replace existing" option although "Keep existing" is recommended.

After reinstall, your OfficeJet printer may appear as a greyed out
icon in the printer folder. Right click on this icon and uncheck
the work offline menu item. The OfficeJet will appear normal and
your device will function properly.

Windows 95 has a problem with displaying the plug and play
dialog at inappropriate times. This usually occurs during Add
Printer. During Add Printer the Plug and Play dialog comes
up saying that it found a new printer. Cancel this dialog
box and continue with Add Printer. You may also see this behavior
when rebooting your PC after installing the OfficeJet. Cancel the
dialog and specify don't show again.
