PURPOSE OF THIS README FILE

The HP Color LaserJet 8500 printer supports color matching through
ICC and ICM color profiles. This Readme file describes how to
enable color management in Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. It also
describes how to install ICC and ICM color profiles in several
popular ICC-compliant Windows applications with color management
     capabilities.

Note: HP Color LaserJet 8500 printer refers to the
HP Color LaserJet 8500, 8500 N, and 8500 DN printers.

COLOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (CMSs)

A color management system (CMS) performs two main functions:

     * Mapping colors between devices with different ranges of
color (gamuts), such as scanners and printers

     * Transforming colors from one working space to another, such as
from CMYK (cyan/magenta/yellow/black) to sRGB (a term
generally used to define red/green/blue color output for
        monitors)

When mapping colors from one gamut space to another, the best
method often depends on the type of data being mapped. For
example, when transforming photographic data to a smaller data
space, it is important to maintain the relative color differences
that give the image a realistic appearance. This process is often
called a perceptual mapping. The process of transforming named
colors, such as PANTONE(R)* colors, and matching a standard ink
color as closely as possible, is called a colormetric
     transformation.

ICC color profiles handle these different types of conversion
through the use of intents (values representing different
approaches to creating a color rendering). Three standard output
intents are available: perceptual, colormetric, and saturated.
Objects are tagged with an intent and transformed accordingly.

If an object is untagged, the default intent is used. The color
profile installed by the printer installer uses the perceptual
     intent as the default.

Many applications that support color management specialize in
one data type. When using application-based color management, it
might be useful to use different intents for different
applications. For example, use a perceptual color profile in a
photo editing application, a saturated color profile in an
illustration package used to create graphics, and a colormetric
color profile in a document production application where
PANTONE(R)* or other named colors are used.

Many applications allow the user to select a default intent.
However, the best solution is to tag each object with the intent
you wish to apply. Check with your software vendor for more
     information on using intents.

ENABLING CMS SUPPORT IN WINDOWS 95 AND WINDOWS NT 4.0

When you install the printer drivers, the HP8500r.icm file, which enables CMS support for the printer, is
automatically copied to the correct directory. The Windows Registry
     is also automatically modified.

To make further adjustments within your application, see
     "Hints/Issues" in this Readme file.

                           ******************
                           III. HINTS/ISSUES
                           ******************

ALL APPLICATIONS

     --------------------------
     Conventions for File Names
     --------------------------

The printer supports both RGB and CMYK color input paths. To
enable color management, an ICC-compliant color profile for the
data type must be installed. The convention used to distinguish
between CMYK and sRGB color profiles is HP8500c.icm for CMYK
     and HP8500r.icm for sRGB.

Since the Windows graphics design interface (GDI) is sRGB
compliant, the HP8500r.icm color profile is
installed by default and is recommended for most color management
tasks. When using the PCL printer drivers, the .icm color profile is
recommended for best performance since the data are converted to
     sRGB.

Many applications that use ICC color profiles expect to find them
in specific locations. The default locations for ICC color
     profiles are:

     *  Windows 95: Windows/System/Color

     *  Windows NT 4.0: Windows/System32/Color

Although some applications can use color profiles that are stored
anywhere, using the default location for shared or system color
profiles ensures that all applications can use the color profiles.

SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS

The ICC color profiles for the printer can also be used with
     ICC-compliant applications. ICC-compliant applications are
capable of managing color transformations within the application
and in some cases use the information for printing directly to
the printer with internal printer drivers rather than the
     operating system printer drivers.

The following applications are ICC compliant, and the accompanying
procedures show how to install ICM color profiles in
these applications. Other applications will soon be compliant.
Check with your software vendor for more information.
