INTRODUCTION **************** PURPOSE OF THIS README FILE The HP Color LaserJet 8500 printer supports color matching through ICC and ICM color profiles. This Readme file describes how to enable color management in Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. It also describes how to install ICC and ICM color profiles in several popular ICC-compliant Windows applications with color management capabilities. Note: HP Color LaserJet 8500 printer refers to the HP Color LaserJet 8500, 8500 N, and 8500 DN printers. COLOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (CMSs) A color management system (CMS) performs two main functions: * Mapping colors between devices with different ranges of color (gamuts), such as scanners and printers * Transforming colors from one working space to another, such as from CMYK (cyan/magenta/yellow/black) to sRGB (a term generally used to define red/green/blue color output for monitors) When mapping colors from one gamut space to another, the best method often depends on the type of data being mapped. For example, when transforming photographic data to a smaller data space, it is important to maintain the relative color differences that give the image a realistic appearance. This process is often called a perceptual mapping. The process of transforming named colors, such as PANTONE(R)* colors, and matching a standard ink color as closely as possible, is called a colormetric transformation. ICC color profiles handle these different types of conversion through the use of intents (values representing different approaches to creating a color rendering). Three standard output intents are available: perceptual, colormetric, and saturated. Objects are tagged with an intent and transformed accordingly. If an object is untagged, the default intent is used. The color profile installed by the printer installer uses the perceptual intent as the default. Many applications that support color management specialize in one data type. When using application-based color management, it might be useful to use different intents for different applications. For example, use a perceptual color profile in a photo editing application, a saturated color profile in an illustration package used to create graphics, and a colormetric color profile in a document production application where PANTONE(R)* or other named colors are used. Many applications allow the user to select a default intent. However, the best solution is to tag each object with the intent you wish to apply. Check with your software vendor for more information on using intents. ****************************** II. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ****************************** ENABLING CMS SUPPORT IN WINDOWS 95 AND WINDOWS NT 4.0 When you install the printer drivers, the HP8500r.icm file, which enables CMS support for the printer, is automatically copied to the correct directory. The Windows Registry is also automatically modified. To make further adjustments within your application, see "Hints/Issues" in this Readme file. ****************** III. HINTS/ISSUES ****************** ALL APPLICATIONS -------------------------- Conventions for File Names -------------------------- The printer supports both RGB and CMYK color input paths. To enable color management, an ICC-compliant color profile for the data type must be installed. The convention used to distinguish between CMYK and sRGB color profiles is HP8500c.icm for CMYK and HP8500r.icm for sRGB. Since the Windows graphics design interface (GDI) is sRGB compliant, the HP8500r.icm color profile is installed by default and is recommended for most color management tasks. When using the PCL printer drivers, the .icm color profile is recommended for best performance since the data are converted to sRGB. Many applications that use ICC color profiles expect to find them in specific locations. The default locations for ICC color profiles are: * Windows 95: Windows/System/Color * Windows NT 4.0: Windows/System32/Color Although some applications can use color profiles that are stored anywhere, using the default location for shared or system color profiles ensures that all applications can use the color profiles. SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS The ICC color profiles for the printer can also be used with ICC-compliant applications. ICC-compliant applications are capable of managing color transformations within the application and in some cases use the information for printing directly to the printer with internal printer drivers rather than the operating system printer drivers. The following applications are ICC compliant, and the accompanying procedures show how to install ICM color profiles in these applications. Other applications will soon be compliant. Check with your software vendor for more information. ----------------------------------- Adobe(TM) Illustrator 7.0 and Later ----------------------------------- 1. From the File menu, click Color Settings. 2. Click the Printer drop-down list box. 3. From the Profile drop-down list box, select HP8500r.icm. 4. (Optional) Click the Intent drop-down list box and select the intent you wish to use. (Colormetric or Graphics is most commonly used for graphics.) 5. Click OK. ------------------- Adobe PageMaker 6.5 ------------------- 1. From the File menu, click Print. 2. Click the Printer drop-down list box and select HP CLJ 8500. 3. If you selected a PostScript(TM) printer driver, select HP CLJ 8500-PS from the PPD drop-down list box. 4. Click Color, and then click CMS Setup. 5. From the Composite Printer drop-down list box, select HP8500r.icm. 6. Click OK. 7. Hold the SHIFT key down to change the Print button to Done. 8. Click Done. ---------------------------------- Adobe Photoshop(TM) 4.0 and Later ---------------------------------- Adobe Photoshop uses ICC color profiles to create an Adobe Photoshop-specific separation table (.aci file). These tables are used to convert to and from CMYK. 1. From the File menu, click Color Settings, and then click Separation Tables. 2. Click Build Tables Using ICC Profiles. 3. From the Profile drop-down list box, select HP CLJ 8500-CMYK. 4. (Optional) From the Render Intent drop-down list box, select the intent you wish to use. (Perceptual is recommended for photographs.) 5. Click Build. 6. Click OK. ------------ CorelDRAW! 7 ------------ 1. Start the Color Manager 7 either independently or from CorelDRAW! 7 or Corel PhotoPaint 7 by selecting Color Manager from the Tools menu. 2. If the Composite Line check box is not selected, click the check box to select it. 3. From the Composite drop-down list box, select Install from Disk. 4. If you are using Windows 95, enter or browse for this path: Windows/System/Color. - Or - If you are using Windows NT, enter or browse for this path: Winnt/System32/Color. 5. Click OK. 6. Click OK again. 7. From the Manufacturer list, select Hewlett-Packard. 8. From the Model list, select HP8500r.icm. 9. Click OK. 10. Click Finish. --------------------- Macromedia FreeHand 7 --------------------- 1. From the File menu, select Print. 2. Click Color Management and make sure the Color Management check box is selected. 3. From the Monitor Simulates drop-down list box, select Composite Printer. 4. From the Composite Printer list, select HP8500r.icm. 5. Click OK. 6. Click Cancel. -------------------------------------------- Microsoft Publisher 97 (For Windows 95 Only) -------------------------------------------- 1. From the Tools drop-down list box, select Options. 2. Make sure the Improve Screen and Printer Color Matching check boxes are selected. 3. Click OK. Microsoft Publisher 97 automatically uses the ICM profile entered in the Registry for the printer driver you have currently selected. --------------- QuarkXpress 4.0 --------------- 1. Check the XTensions Manager in the Utilities menu to make sure the Color Management XTension is active. (If the Color Management XTension is active, a check appears in the Active column next to Quark CMS.) Note: If the Color Management XTension is not available, see the QuarkXpress documentation for information about installing XTensions. 2. From the Edit menu, point to Edit Preferences, and then click Color Management. 3. Select the checkbox in front of Color Management Active to turn the Quark CMS on. 4. From the Composite Printer drop-down list box, select HP8500r.icm. 5. Click OK. ********************************************* IV.
