                   Compaq LCM ROM Flash Utilities

To assist the system administrator with flashing the system ROM BIOS and setting
the Setup Password while running Intel's LANDesk Configuration Manager (LCM),
the following utilities have been developed. The Setup Password controls access
to F10 Computer Setup, controls ROM Flashing, and can be used to override the
Power-On Password. A Setup Password is also required on each target Deskpro
prior to using the Remote ROM Flash (no relation to ROM Flash below) or Remote
Security Management.

1) ROM Flash (flshlite.exe, flsh.cpu) is the LCM compatible version of the
ROMPAQ system ROM flash utility. ROM Flash is a scaled down version of ROMPAQ
that is compatible with the limited DOS memory available and the protected mode
environment that may exist while running LCM. flsh.cpu is the driver for
flshlite.exe. ROM Flash requires iteratively compressed image files to work
properly under LCM. These image files will be supplied with normal ROMPAQ
releases for systems that support ROM Flash. ROM Flash is only compatible with
recent system ROMs. ROM Flash will report that it is not compatible with the
system if the ROM does not support it. The command line for ROM Flash is as
follows:

   flshlite.exe /l:us /f flsh.cpu default

ROM Flash can flash a Deskpro ROM BIOS without requiring the administrator to
enter a Setup Password. Remote ROM Flash, another utility from Compaq that will
flash a Deskpro ROM over the network, requires a Setup Password exist on the
target Deskpro and requires a Setup Password accompany the ROM image to that
Deskpro. This is done to verify that the administrator is flashing the ROM not
an unauthorized person. Since LCM controls who is allowed to configure the
system and download a new ROM image, the extra password is not necessary for ROM
Flash.

2) Set Password (set_pw.exe) is a utility for system administrators that will
initially set Deskpro's Setup Password through LCM as the administrator
configures the system. For this utility to function properly, a password must be
assigned to it(see Assign Password below). Then, set_pw.exe can set the
password on each system one time only; Remote Security Management or F-10
Computer Setup must be used to change the Setup Password after it has been set
with Set Password.

3) Assign Password (assignpw.exe) is the utility used to attach a Setup Password
to the Set Password utility. In an LCM environment, the user of the
client machine will not know the Setup Password and the system administrator
will not be present to enter a password. Therefore the Set Password utility
must 'know' the Setup Password. The Assign Password utility will 'assign' a
Setup Password to the Set Password program so that the correct value is
set on the target Deskpro. A password must be assigned to the Set Password
utility before it can be used.

Assign Password can also be used with ROM Flash if a Setup Password has been
previously set on the target Deskpro. Ordinarily, ROM Flash would be used with
LCM when the Deskpro is being configured for the first time. In this case, it
is likely that a Setup Password would not be set so ROM Flash would not need to
include one. However, if a Setup Password is set on the target Deskpro, then
ROM Flash will require password verification before allowing a ROM Flash.
Assign Password can be used here to affix a password to ROM Flash.

Password assignment must be done at the LCM server. The Setup passwords assigned
to ROM Flash and to the Set Password utility must match. Likewise, if a Setup
Password has been assigned to ROM Flash, then that password must be set on each
client machine before ROM Flash can be used to upgrade the system ROM.

To assign a password to set_pw.exe, change directories to the directory that
contains set_pw.exe and type "assignpw set_pw.exe". You will be prompted to type
in the password. Press RETURN after you have typed in the password. You may use
the BACKSPACE key to correct mistakes. You will then be prompted to confirm the
password that you just entered. Pressing ENTER before any password keys have
been typed in will unassign the previously assigned password. You may need to do
this if the Setup Password is deleted from the client machines. To assign a new
password, just run the Assign Password utility again.

If you wish to assign a password to ROM Flash, change directories to the
directory that contains flshlite.exe and flsh.cpu and type "assignpw flsh.cpu".
Type in the password just as you did when assigning it to set_pw.exe. Make sure
you use the same password that was assigned to set_pw.exe.
