1.  Overview
============
The Intel DMI 2.0 client instrumentation for Windows is an updated set 
of software modules that allow standards-based DMI Management 
applications such as Intel's LANDesk(r) Client Manager to monitor status 
of PCI network adapters. The instrumentation layer uses an industry-
standard and approved DMI to SNMP mapping technique. As a result, the 
information available to both DMI and SNMP based management applications
is identical. SNMP support is restricted to Windows NT 4.0 only. Please 
make sure that the drivers included in this CD is used to view custom 
information regarding AFT/ALB, VLAN and Flow control. 



2. System Requirements
======================
- Any Intel NDIS PCI adapter driver
- Intel DMI 2.0 Service Provider
- Microsoft SNMP Service
- Intel Client Instrumentation for DMI and SNMP
- For Adapter Teaming features, AFT and ALB support, the latest NDIS 
  drivers on this CD

Because Intel uses an industry standard DMI-to-SNMP mapping application 
to support SNMP, you must have both the Microsoft SNMP Service and an 
Intel DMI 2.0 Service Provider installed and running before installing 
the Intel Client Instrumentation package. Contact your Network
Administrator if you need help installing either of these.

If you plan to use SNMP management applications exclusively and do not 
have an Intel DMI 2.0 Service Provider installed, you can use the 
Intel DMI 2.0 Service Provider available elsewhere on this CD. To
install this Service Provider, run ..\DMI_SP\WIN32\DISK1\SETUP.EXE. 

The Intel Client Instrumentation supports all Intel PCI PRO/100 and 
PRO/1000 adapters. If you are running an NDIS based driver under 
Windows NT 4.0, there is no need to install any new drivers to get full
DMI and SNMP support.


3. Installation
===============

We provide two methods you may use to install the Intel Client
Instrumentation. Both methods provide the same DMI and SNMP
functionality after installation.

Method 1:  (Preferred for over-the-network installing) Push button install (Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95, and Windows 98)
------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Make sure your Intel PCI network adapter, its appropriate NDIS 
   adapter driver, the Microsoft SNMP Service, and an Intel DMI 2.0
   Service Provider are installed and running on your computer.

2. From the DMI-SNMP directory on your CD, run \SNMP\WIN32\Install.EXE.

3. If prompted, restart your computer. The Intel Client Instrumentation
   does not require you to restart your computer, but restarting may be
   required by other support services. Restart is mandatory for Windows 
   95 and Windows 98. In Windows NT 4.0, view the Event log using the 
   Event Viewer for any Client Instrumentation startup problems. 

Method 2:  Network Control Panel Install (Windows NT 4.0 only)
--------------------------------------------------------------
1. Make sure the Intel PCI network adapter and its appropriate NDIS 
   adapter driver, the Microsoft SNMP Service, and an Intel DMI 2.0
   Service Provider are installed and running on your computer.

2. From the Windows NT 4.0 Control Panel, start the Network Control 
   Panel.

3. Click the Services tab.

4. Click Add Services.

5. Click Have Disk

6. Type in the location of the \DMI-SNMP\SNMP\WIN32 directory on your 
   Intel adapter CD (example, if your CD drive is D:, type 
   D:\DMI-SNMP\SNMP\WIN32).

7. Select "Intel Client Instrumentation for DMI and SNMP" and click OK.

8. If prompted, restart your computer. The Intel Client Instrumentation 
   does not require you to restart your computer, but restarting may be 
   required by other support services. View the Event log using the 
   Event Viewer for any Client Instrumentation startup problems.

      NOTE: If you need to uninstall the DMI components, note that 
      Client Instrumentation must be uninstalled prior to uninstalling 
      your Service Provider. See section 4 for details.

4. Uninstall Procedure
======================
Depending on the installation method you used, there are two ways to 
uninstall the Intel Client Instrumentation. In either case, it is 
required to have the Intel DMI 2.0 Service Provider installed and 
running during the uninstallation of the Client Instrumentation:   

Method 1:  Uninstall for the push button install
------------------------------------------------
1. From the Windows Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove 
   icon.

2. Select "Intel Client Instrumentation for DMI and SNMP"

3. Click the Add/Remove button.

Method 2:  Uninstall for the Network Control Panel Install 
NT 4.0 only)
----------------------------------------------------------
1. From the Control Panel, double-click the Network icon.

2. Click the Services tab.

3. Select the "Intel Client Instrumentation for DMI and SNMP" service.

4. Click the Remove button.


5. Usage with SNMP Management Applications
==========================================
In order to access the SNMP data through the Intel Client 
Instrumentation, you must load the files DMTF-DMI.MIB, INTEL.MIB and 
INTELNIC.MIB located in the \DMI-SNMP\SNMP\WIN32 directory, from within 
your SNMP Management Application. The DMTF-DMI.MIB and INTEL.MIB should 
be loaded before loading INTELNIC.MIB. If you have already installed 
another version of INTEL.MIB, use the INTEL.MIB with the most recent 
file date. Read the documentation for your Management Application for 
more information on how to load MIB files.

In HP OpenView NNM, use "Event Config" to configure the events. For 
example, to configure the "Cable Unplugged" event, select 
"intelNICHEALTHEvt2", go to the "Modify Events" menu item. Select the 
Action as "Log and Display in Category" and specify an appropriate
category. In the Event Log message, enter "Cable unplugged $*".


6. Supported Standards
======================
The Intel Client Instrumentation Version 2.0 fully supports the DMI 2.0 
specification and has support for Ether-Like SNMP MIBs. 

7. New Features in This Release
===============================
 - Support for AFT/ALB management (Windows NT 4.0 only)
 - Support for VLAN management (Windows NT 4.0 only)
 - Support for Flow Control and TCO management 
 - DMI Events and SNMP Traps
 - Custom solution and threshold can be specified in the NI_NIC.DAT file 
   in the system directory.



8. Known Issues
===============
1. In order to use Hewlett Packard OpenView* Network Node Manager with 
   the Intel Client Instrumentation, you must use Release 5.0x with 
   consolidated patch NM_00046.EXE. This patch can be downloaded from 
   http://ovweb.external.hp.com/cpe/patches/index.html

2. To remove the Intel DMI 2.0 Service Provider after installing the 
   Intel Client Instrumentation, you must uninstall the Intel Client 
   Instrumentation first. 

3. If you are running Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3, you may have 
   problems installing the Microsoft SNMP Service. This is a known and 
   documented issue with Service Pack 3. If you install the Microsoft 
   SNMP Service after Service Pack 3, you may receive the error 
   "Entrypoint SnmpSvcGetEnterpriseOID could not be located 
   in snmpapi.dll." To fix this problem, you will need to reinstall 
   Service Pack 3. Details are available from Microsoft at:

   Read the section under 3.0 USER NOTES, 3.2 Adding New Components to 
   the System.

4. Version 3.0 of the Intel Client Instrumentation may not install 
   correctly over Version 1.0 of the Intel DMI Network Adapter 
   Instrumentation Layer. The Uninstall feature may not work correctly 
   after upgrading. In order to install Version 3.0 correctly, we 
   strongly recommend that you use the documented Uninstall procedures 
   for Version 1.0 prior to running the Version 3.0 installation. 

5. After uninstalling using Network Control Panel, restart the machine 
   if prompted.

6. If your TCP/IP protocol is removed after installing the Intel Client 
   Instrumentation,  you must reinstall the Intel Client Instrumentation 
   after you reinstall the TCP/IP protocol to regain functionality.

7. If your Microsoft SNMP Service is removed after installing the Intel 
   Client Instrumentation, you must reinstall the Intel Client 
   Instrumentation after you reinstall the Microsoft SNMP Service to 
   regain functionality.

8. Only The following events listed in the ni_nic.mif and intelnic.mib 
   are currently supported:
      - Cable unplugged/No LAN activity
      - Adapter initialization failure
      - AFT/ALB events (Adapter Fault Tolerance/Adaptive Load Balancing)

9.  Setting the Preferred Primary from the Management application will
   not be persistent after restarting the computer.
